Need a Diagnosis (Blue Oyster)
    #22187882 - 09/04/15 12:37 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys, we just moved into our larger space and our mushrooms seemed to have not enjoyed the trip. Our once 30 lb/week farm has dropped to 3 lb/week and we can't figure out why.

Lots of bags colonized quickly to a complete bright white, seem to stall and are now browning (turning a tea color) with little or no fruiting.

Other bags are partially colonized and fruit with tiny mushrooms that simply brown and wither. Some bags will have perfect fruits and abnormal ones almost side by side (see photo below).

Some with both healthy and "sick" fruits:

A franken-bag partially colonized and putting out these (blurry pic, apologies)

Our farm is a single room split in 2 (each 10' x 10') with a vinyl curtain between the sections. Colonizing space receives less than a 1000 lux of constant 6500k LED lighting. Our fruiting room has 12000 lux (6500K fluorescent) on a 12/12 timer. RH is a constant 95% in both sections and the rooms are ventilated for 20 minutes each hour.

Ideas?

Do you have one of those digital thermometers that take a daily high and low temp reading?

I can't see really well, but it appears that the brown you're talking about is probably metabolites. If I had to take a guess, I would say those bags had a bacterial problem. From the pictures, it looks like you're not  getting  enough FAE. Hopefully someone with more experience with chime in for you.

Fresh air. None of those mushrooms are "healthy" they are all lacking fresh air.

Double your air throughput and also install a fan that just circulates air in the room- get an easily cleaned one because of spores.

There may be other issues but that is the main one, fix that first you should see immediate results

looks like a copy/paste of my problems. Are your temp higher than 24°C ? because it would explain stalling, no pinning, aborts and bacterial/trich bloom

Thanks for the quick replies!

invitro: Yes and all readings were fine except for the 24C we had one day.

lowtech: Metabolites, for combating nematodes? The weird thing about the bags is how quickly they colonized and are almost completely dry for no apparent reason. Going to have to do an autopsy on a few and see what happened.

solarity: took your advice and put our ventilator on continuous rather than 20 on / 40 off had to buy a second hand humidifier to keep the RH above 90%. Also did the calculations and it seems our new space is too big for our exhaust fan (it's only 90cfm, for a 1300 sqft space) so we're only getting 4 AE per hour, the lower limit recommended by Stamets. The browning continues but those that don't turn are making larger caps. Not sure how we'll be able to keep up with the heating and humidity needs this winter with more AE. What do you do?

drake89: Strain is from a tree in the region, then selected over several generations for larger fruits and cold tolerance. Do you recommend a specific commercial strain instead? (Nice bloom, btw)

popok: Our rooms have been running hot a lot lately actually, but even during the July heat wave we didn't get any browning like this. Did you find a solution?

It would be cool to see new pics of the mushrooms, both the ones that doing well and the ones that are browning.  If you don't mind.

yes, the ones I asked if you were growing.  amycel's 3015 or lambert's 123.  those are the only two worth growing in my opinion, that are drop shipped.

I've heard the term drop shipping, but I don't think I grasp what you mean by it in this context, please explain?

With a circulation fan you can get away with a little less AE

The lower the temperatures the slower the growth, the less the CO2 produced so less AE require.

Change the strains depending on the seasons to avoid heating/cooling as much as possible.

You don’t need so much AE when not actually fruiting.

The brown ones just look like aborts - may be strain related.

I have grown 3015 but prefer the flavour/texture of Mycelia's 2191 - though the yield is slightly lower.

drop shipping means they ship the same day they get your money.  but it's usually a few days since Amycel and Lambert only take checks.  Aloha takes credit cards but their spawn is custom made and takes up to two months.

The browning is now just happening on the aborted pins, no longer affecting more mature fruit, which looking a lot healthier:

Seems the heat spike and lack of sufficient AE in the new, larger room was causing most of the issues.

I increased air exchange in incubation room and summer is over, that was my solution. Incubation room was at 29-31°C since july, now only 26°C, I'll get an A/C next year.

I concur with the above posts. The lanky stems are the dead giveaway. Im guessing with the larger space you placed more substrate in there, increasing the heat and CO2 output.

While we are talking strains, what cool weather oyster strain would either of you recommend from aloha? Or would you not recommend aloha? Its cooling down here in el paso and getting ready to swap to winter strains and upgrading to pro cultures. Thanks!
