Stove temp for PC
    #22186463 - 09/04/15 05:27 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

What temp do you set your burner on, for the pressure cooker? Medium, Med-high, or High?

And is the pressure cooker supposed to sit there and hiss, even though you can't really see any steam billowing out? Here's mine in operation, running on medium.

I can get away with having mine on low once it starts it operation.

I guess try turning it down until it stops hissing, then put it up a notch
also, did it come with instructions? they might help

Yeah unfortunately they were pretty vague. They explained its basic operation, but they seemed to leave out what 2 of those valves are on top. As well as not telling you what temp to run it at, but I supposes that would depend on what you were cooking.

Are there some of them that don't his at all?

This will show you how to make a no hiss pressure cooker with an AA. I wouldnt try to do it to yours. Start with high heat, bring water to a boil, then vent steam for 5 mins, add weight and turn down heat until it rest right at the 15 psi mark without going over. The lower your heat, the less hissing you'll get. On my stove a 6 (med heat) is perfect after reaching pressure.

The weight lifts off the PC when P>15psi and releases the excess pressure.  You want it to do that the minimum amount possible.  You should be aiming for a gentle rocking of the weight, letting you know that it is very close to lifting off (ie around 15psi,) but not wasting energy and water by having it jiggling and releasing tons of steam all the time.

Usually it will require one adjustment (reduction) at around 20 minutes after pressurizing.

Tap the weight with your hand.  If it doesn't hiss, you're not near pressure and you need to turn your shit up.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

Well I was just wondering if the hissing was something I wanted to happen, in order for proper sterilizing to be going on. If its something its supposed to do when being used correctly, then I guess I can't see any real reason to modify it. That PSI gauge on top of that one in the link would be real nice though.

Not sure what you mean by the weight, unless your referring to what they call the "knob". That's the biggest one, in the middle of the cooker in the pic. According to the directions you wait until you see steam coming out of that middle hole (and it is really just a hole) and then you stick that knob down over it, and it releases air much more slowly. Well, that's how its supposed to go down. The whole time I was using it, at various temps, the "knob" was just outgassing fast as it could go. Least that's the way it seemed to me.

But again, I saw little to no actual steam being released. But you could feel the hot air with your fingers, and hear the hissing.

Another one, the front 'vavle' that is closest to the camera in the pic, seemed to also be spewing the whole time. I think that's where the hissing was coming from, but I was a little afraid to get my face right up there and check it out all while fiddling around with the valves in an effort to get them to shut up. I have since figured out that the hole on the handle closest to the pot itself, is yet another valve. That valve only functions when the lid isn't tight enough though, and it just opens up and won't let the pressure go above 0.7psi.

All stoves are different but I run my at 4 once it's at 15 psi. I boil the water with the lid just sitting on top. Then I put the lid on let it vent steam for 5 min & put the weight on and adjust the temperature down the 4.

I still don't know what you guys mean by "weight".

I finished my sterilizing, and there was only 1/8th of an inch of water left in there. That sound about right? Or should there have been more water left? I put probably 2.5 cups. Just enough to come to the top of the jar lids.

Are you sure those small PC's get to 15 psi? I've seen plenty of those only do 0,5 bar (7-8psi)

oh yeah thats true! I tried to make the OP aware, if it only does half a bar add some time to the Pc run.

Yeah I kinda cheaped out and got a small cooker. All I could afford at the time was about $50. It only holds 9 quarts. The nice ones were $100-$140.

Guess it wouldn't be very useful for a bulk grow.

So it doesn't absolutely have to go to 15 psi? Hmm, didn't know that.

sounds to me like it's losing a lot of water though...

I'm sure different cookers have different modes of operation, but mine will lose 1/2cm after a 2 hour cook...
maybe you're runing it too high, it shouldnt' have a stream of steam coming out of it all the time

mine I think runs at 12psi, so I cook for another 30% to make sure it's good and done

If you never got the PSI up to the weight indication then no it wouldn't rock. But with a 15 psi weight, it should begin to rock at 14-15 psi, and rock more aggressively with more pressure. Wobble would be another good word.

Tru^ I just like to be sure it's reached 15 psi (not 14 psi, which is when my PC makes that hissing sound) before turning down the heat, just in case I don't PC long enough.

No because that's determined by what weight you're using. If you use a 5 psi weight, it will rock and hiss at 5 psi. If you use a 15 psi weight, it will rock at 15 psi. Some cookers do not reach 15 psi though, some only get to 7-8 psi.

I have a sterilizer, so no rocker. Son of a bitch has to have the perfect setting on the stovetop or it will get too hot and dump 5 lbs of pressure. I usually set it on high to bring it to temp, then reduce it to between the 3-4 setting on my stovetop. it changes slightly with atmospheric pressure, I've found.

It helps me get the PC to the EXACT pressure reading. When it starts hissing and the weight is rocking like crazy, the gauge reads just under 15 psi. So, i give it the extra 5 minutes until the needle is right on the 15 psi mark, then I turn down the heat to medium(it hovers around 13psi). Then, I turn off the heat after 90 minutes and move it to a different rack on the stovetop to let it cool down over night.

the instructions manual or the bottom side of your PC should say how many PSI/bar/whatever your PC does.

I was just trying to make a joke, when the rocker hisses it relieves pressure because the weight only does 15 psi. you dont need a gauge for that.
A gauge can help you detect defects in your PC tho, like leaks etc.
