If you never got the PSI up to the weight indication then no it wouldn't rock. But with a 15 psi weight, it should begin to rock at 14-15 psi, and rock more aggressively with more pressure. Wobble would be another good word.

Hmm. Think I'm going to invest in one with a PSI gauge or maybe put one on mine.

you could just see what PSI your cooker does. I dont know many people who trust the gauge over the hissing sound..

Tru^ I just like to be sure it's reached 15 psi (not 14 psi, which is when my PC makes that hissing sound) before turning down the heat, just in case I don't PC long enough.

Wouldn't you have to know at what PSI the cooker hisses?

For my presto canner I taped a nickel to the rocker weight and run the heat as low as it'll go while maintaining ~16psi

No because that's determined by what weight you're using. If you use a 5 psi weight, it will rock and hiss at 5 psi. If you use a 15 psi weight, it will rock at 15 psi. Some cookers do not reach 15 psi though, some only get to 7-8 psi.

I have a sterilizer, so no rocker. Son of a bitch has to have the perfect setting on the stovetop or it will get too hot and dump 5 lbs of pressure. I usually set it on high to bring it to temp, then reduce it to between the 3-4 setting on my stovetop. it changes slightly with atmospheric pressure, I've found.

It helps me get the PC to the EXACT pressure reading. When it starts hissing and the weight is rocking like crazy, the gauge reads just under 15 psi. So, i give it the extra 5 minutes until the needle is right on the 15 psi mark, then I turn down the heat to medium(it hovers around 13psi). Then, I turn off the heat after 90 minutes and move it to a different rack on the stovetop to let it cool down over night.

Did you just drill and tap a hole for the gauge? I got no problem doing that.

the instructions manual or the bottom side of your PC should say how many PSI/bar/whatever your PC does.

I was just trying to make a joke, when the rocker hisses it relieves pressure because the weight only does 15 psi. you dont need a gauge for that. A gauge can help you detect defects in your PC tho, like leaks etc.

I wouldn't unless you're a qualified welder

Lol.
I think that a standard tap is rated for way more than 15psi. Now I'm curious lol
I know it depends on the material and size of the tap, but my guess is this one would hold up to about 120psi. I'll do a little research and report back.
