How long is too long for monotub colonization time?
    #22185915 - 09/03/15 11:47 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I recently spawned 4 66 qt monotubs at a spawn ratio of 1:4.  Because I only used 3 quarts of spawn, the tubs are taking a little longer to fully colonize.  Today is technically day 13 of colonization, and I'm a little concerned that they aren't quite far enough along.  since I usually spawn at 1:2, I'm used to my tubs being completely colonized within 7-10 days.  How long is too long as far as colonization is concerned?  If they aren't done by day 14, should I consider tossing them?  I'm concerned that they may have stalled or may contaminate soon.  What is your experience with this?

This pic was taken 2-3 days ago, and the other tubs are at a similar level of colonization.  The mycelium looks healthy, but I definitely would like to see it fill in a little more before putting it into fruiting.  Strain is penis envy, BTW.

Yes. Let it go a few more days if it makes you feel better, it won't hurt anything. I actually let my PE tubs colonize a week or so longer than usual before casing.

It'll fruit when its ready to do so. Just let it be.
You can wait until you see primordia to introduce FAE if you want.

Thanks!  I'm probably not going to case these, but I'll put them into fruiting when I have a little more time tomorrow.

Why such a low spawn count?

I always thought 5 quarts was the standard amount of spawn for a 66er. It seems like his sub would wind up like 2" deep with 3 quarts at his ratio.

A ratio is just a ratio it doesnt say anything about the total amount.
1:4 with 3qt spawn = 1x3 + 4x3 = 15qts.
1:2 ratio with 5 qts spawn = 1x5 + 2x5 = 15 qt's

there should be a gif of a guy drinking from a can of mathematics...

Yes, I'm aware of that. I am saying that 15 quarts seems like a TINY amount of sub for a 66er. I guess I meant low total amount in general, but only referenced the spawn.

a brck is 8 plus 2 qt's verm is 10 plus 5 qt's of spawn is 15....that's the numbers from every tek and gives about 4 inches:shrug:

why? you said yourself 5qts and a bucket tek is standard for a 66qt tub. thats ~15qts total.

yeah what cron said. that fast typing math nerd!

I use an additional quart of spawn normally.  Since I add a half quart of gypsum, and the verm expands a little too, I generally ball park my total bulk volume at around 12 quarts.  The three new tubs each received 6 quarts of spawn and were thoroughly mixed.  A lot of growers will add a thin layer of bulk to cover any exposed grains, but I skip that step and just mix as well as I can.  I'm really interested to see how the 1:4 ratio tubs compare to the 1:2 ratio tubs!  I'm actually in the process of pasteurizing one last tub's worth of bulk, so I'll have a total of 4 tubs spawned at a ratio of 1:4, and 4 tubs spawned at a ratio of 1:2.  I think this is the most tubs that I've had going at one time. I'm pretty proud of myself if you can't tell
