I'm not sure if anybody mentioned this, but Jerry Garcia's comments are on the back of my invisible landscape book, "one of the most mind-boggling books I have ever read"

I'm sure if Bob was not dyslexic he may have been into mckenna books as well, maybe he is, I'm not sure, I have never heard him mention mckenna before though.

Mckenna is misunderstood, people mistake his novel speculations for his actual beliefs.

He was pushing the limits of creative thought, he was saying, "isn't this interesting" and people think he was saying "this is what I believe and am pushing you to believe it too"

In reality terence was a grumpy reclusive intellectual, a very rational non-nonsense type of guy,...
And when I say these people say "what? Are we talking about the same person?"...which leads me to believe that they misunderstood mckenna to begin with...

There was an event called "the big bang in biology" or the "the big bang of the brain" where brain sized expanded dramatically for no known reason, some say it was from eating meat, which may have contributed the extra proteins needed to build the brain matter, but mckenna was saying that ingesting pseudo-neurotransmitters in our food led to this event and higher neurochemistry...

It's not as absurd as it sounds, serotonin is 5-hydroxy-tryptamine, we produce it from tryptophan, psilocin is 4-hydroxy-dimethyltryptamine and produced from tryptophan...if you moved the hydroxy group from position 5 to 4 and add two methyl groups to the amine nitrogen of serotonin (a key neurotransmitter) you get psilocin...These things really are exogenous neurotransmitters...

Whether he was right or not, it's not a bad idea.

People like Einstein never thought in the box, there there may be value to pushing the creative limits of idea formation...

I don't see how any user on here could dislike McKenna. With all the other dipshits in this world...you choose to not like one of our own? someone that dedicated whole life to the psychs we know and love? you don't need to believe all his ideas but atleast respect the man.

Most people know nothing of mckenna' s real world work, they hear about the time-wave or "space-mushrooms" and discredit him, they don't realize that mckenna, Kat Harrison and Ralph metzner started botanical dimentions, a greenhouse devoted to the preservation of rainforest plants and their lore. Terence and Denis wrote one of the earliest psilocybin mushroom grow guides, and were on the frontline of bringing these ideas into the consciousness of the general public.

Not everybody who does mushrooms has to like mckenna, but those who think they can't learn anything from him are cheating themselves.

^^ I agree.

McKenna revolutionized the game. Some even say he developed the penis envy strain...I don't know how true that is, though.

But yeah, he was the man. He made me feel like its OK to be weird. He taught me that my weirdness is what separates me for everyone else..and to appreciate it. He taught me how to respect nature and that loving nature isn't some fruity thing. He made it "cool" to be creatively outspoken. He helped me realize everything I always wanted to believe, such as "people who try to act normal within their culture are missing the point" and so on.

if it wasn't for McKenna, I don't know who I would be...but I do know I wouldn't like the person. He has helped me so much.

Had it not been for mckenna I never would have found Alfred north whitehead, marshal mcluhan, Carl Jung, and many others...mckenna has always been a source of leads as well as entertainment.

When I hear people say mckenna is crazy or full of shit, I always wonder, "are we listening to the same lectures and reading the same books?"...because nothing he has said gives me that impression in the slightest....

I mean...theres SOME crazy ideas..id say about 5% of what he says is a little nuts. I mean, he just goes overboard sometimes. For instance he thought that the cell-phone would take the shape as a mushroom as years went on because "mushrooms are the model" in which cell phones work. He also thought the mind could be downloaded onto a chip that could be put in you eyelid and when you closed your eyes a dropbox fell down and you could pick all these options in space.

he also thought all that 2012 stuff...and so on.

but I mean cmon...if ANYONE proposed as much ideas as McKenna did, then they would certainly have the same amount, if not more, crazy and abnormal ideas. You cant be right 100% of the time.

McKenna has probably read more books by the age of 18 than any of us in our lives. For anyone to dismiss the guy as kook is just ignorant.

what I love most about McKenna, is his true love for psychs. Whenever I listen or read anyone else, they NEVER meet the passion for psychs that McKenna did. I believe I share this same amount of passion...that's why I love him so much.

Yep the last person I would want to represent the psychedelic culture is some quack who came up with the stoned ape theory.

The stoned ape theory is actually quite plausible. MUCH MORE than "time wave zero" ever was.

and please don't call my dad a quack. Please and Thank you, sir.

Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..
