As Simple As...

A cup of coffee can be the beginning of the "drug talk" with your child...
I discovered this when my child was diagnosed ADHD. As most of you, ADHD can be a serious condition for both children and adults and is often treated with Schedule 2 drugs such as methylphenidate (Ritalin), Adderall ( Amphetamine), even a drug called Desoxyn ( literally government grade methamphetamine). While my son is too young to know about such drugs and their possibly addictive consequences (he is only 5), he is old enough to know that coffee is typically a "grown-up" drink.
Something as simple as a cup of coffee can have life long consequences as to whether or not your child decides to touch drugs or not.
You see, I am not talking about this with the perception of coffee as " the enemy", I am speaking this idea with the perception of ourselves as the enemy, more specifically how we have and word the "drug talk" with our children. Coffee is one of the non prescription ways to help children who have ADHD...
But how do you explain to a five year old that he can now have a "grown-up" drink? He doesn't know that caffeine addiction is a real thing that many of us at the Shroomery can support (myself included in this bunch, lol). All he knows and thinking about is that he can all of a sudden have a grown up drink.
Like it or not, this sets a precedent for the rest of their lives, especially if they see drinking or drug use by an adult. Granted, substances like alcohol and marijuana are more social substances, but still, how and at what point in your child's life do you explain these things?
Have you had the drug talk with your child? How old where they? How did you word it?
I posted this in the pub in hopes of generating enough initial replies as possible. However, if this thread is to take off, I propose allowing the exact same original post to be used on other parts of the Shroomery and compiled into a single sticky thread on the Physical and Spiritual Well Being forum or any other part of the Shroomery that the staff sees fit.
This is a serious issue, that seriously needs to be addressed by all parents, any prospective parents, and anyone that gives a flying fuck about our future. Yes, I'm saying that age old drug war cliche of "protect the children", but not in the traditional war on drugs way. We need to make our make as a community with this issue and let our individual ideas on this issue be examined by any other inquiring minds that ponder this same strenuous and serious topic.
Admin staff, mods, I humbly ask y'all to keep this thread serious. Please delete any answers that you feel would insult the integrity of this site or the issue presented in this thread.

I'm sorry but what makes you think your 5 yo child needs such drugs?
I always kind of figured that most kids that age exhibit signs of ADHD. Just seems awfully early in his development to come to that medical conclusion.

you are not in the right place dude.
there are people married...with children here, but they are few and far between. there are so many forums dedicated to parents raising children, why on earth would you come to the shroomery for advice on such a thing?

Personally, my parents 'shielded' me from drugs and alcohol throughout my entire childhood. Did it do anything for me? Yes, but when I became older and started to think for myself, their teachings became obsolete. I mean obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be posting on the Shroomery, lol.

I am against prescription stimulants to treat ADHD. Natural substances should be tried first, prescription stimulants should only be a last resort.
He was recently diagnosed, so I am trying the natural route ATM with coffee and a herbal supplement. If this fails, so be it, prescription stimulants it is. Whatever it takes for my child to live a happy and successful life.

What better place to come about for advice on drugs, specifically this issue?

Your giving your 5 year old coffee? 5 year olds don't need to be taking any drugs! Wait till he/she is at least 12 or so to even think about giving them any drugs for a " mental illness" IMO.

I think it's normal for a 5 year old to be hyperactive and lack any attention span. That's how I was.

This. The industry loves to diagnose young children with "ADHD" when really they are just a little hyperactive. It's all about the money.
Giving your kid ritalin is not the answer
My best friend was on Ritalin as a kid, the shit basically made him trip balls. He said time would literally slow down and then speed up randomly while he was on it. It is not good for healthy development in a child, at all.

My mother is a registered nurse and she told me that she knew I was ADD when I was a child but I was never officially diagnosed because they would just prescribe drugs like ritalin and she didn't think children should be on that shit

Im 23. I grew up in the 90s. My parents were "old school" I guess. They let me have coffee as a kid If I wanted. They let me taste beer. I thought it was horrible lol. And they always smoked around me(cigarettes).
If you really wanna start braking down the drugs and coffee as a starter. Any chemical that is put into your body that alters your thoughts is a drug. This starts with suger.
I don't have kids. Thank god. But if I did. I personally wouldn't worry about all that stuff till the need arises or he asks what drugs really are or whatever the case may be.

But at the 12-step meeting they promised me that their higher power would keep me from doing drugs and everybody chugs coffee like it's going out of business. They also smell like smoke and as soon as the serenity prayer is said everyone goes outside for a smoke. You mean to tell me the 12-steps are a lie?!
