This article gave me like 4 new ideas to add to my list of "VR speculation notes." Maybe it will spark a discussion here

Personally, I will stick to real reality. I loved the idea of virtual reality as a kid, but the idea of getting confused as to what is real is scary

Compairing a reality dissolving technology to a minor thing like an online forum which is text based and can be clocked away from in a second doesnt really work.

Haha - that's a really cool drawing.
That's always one of the first things that crosses my mind when I think of virtual reality. I'll be the first one to sign up for sure.
I did find the concept of flow in the article very interesting. I'm not sure if I have ever achieved that but there are some really interesting implications if flow can be totally achieved by technological means. At some point, the person would lose complete awareness of their true identity/ego and at then the VR becomes true reality. Does that true identity/ego return after the flow ends?

Looks like death to me. If others want to do so, let them. Im sure there will bw much people enjoy about this. That pic sums it up though. I doubt most will go for having ports put in for food, but as Americanculture shows, we humans seem to go for candy. By candy I mean quick, non nutritious pleasure. not just suger, but tpbacco once revered and ceremonial now can be bought with pre loaded cylanders. I am quite nervous about what this fastfood culture will do when we can just let our bodies fall away. People already seem to see their body as 'not really them' in a meaningful way

look how fit the guy is. he's probably got spirulina and broccoli loaded up in his food dispenser. he's probably so happy from all the VR sexual workouts that he has the energy to live a productive lifestyle outside of VR. just look at those muscles...

I liked the flow concept as well. You could design worlds at different developmental levels, all designed to improve your mind. Learning real world skills all the while, ideally. Plus the highest/hardest levels would probably involve the smartest people in the world collaborating on such things, potentially pushing the boundary and making higher levels.
Virtual realities biggest use will be education in my mind. Plus the slightly ridiculous picture of the VR addict will potentially be moot because of the 3-d treadmills being developed for VR. (although the picture is still a legitimate possibility, I don't think its a realistic conclusion personally.)
I really like this because it makes "immortality" a somewhat realistic goal. Assuming people can upload/place their minds in robots, you could potentially live a huge number of different virtual lives. (plus, Talk about a good way to pass time on a plane...or a spaceship)

The biggest advantage of VR will be education and learning which will result in a higher awareness. Eventually it will evolve to such a point that we will lose individual identity and even memory of traditions as a society. What will be the result when you can suddenly see the world through other people's eyes and share experiences? Empathy and understanding will be taken to a new level. Who owns that memory or experience?
Theoterically immortality is achievable. It is very likely that our conscious is just the binary code of the human brain. Replicate that code and emulate it - the same level of awareness is achieved.
Like someone said in the other thread about life after death, do we really own our body or are we our bodies...
Time will tell if we don't wipe eachother out meanwhile.

It all sounds quite aweful. I very much doubt one will be able to remove consciousness from the brain, unless you hook the brain up and stimulate the experiance into it.

The whole science behind it is the very early infant stages. Give it a few hundred years and I totally believe we will be able to code the human mind.

I'm sure that is sarcasm in response to my lofty thinking but look where science was 200 years ago. Virtual reality wasn't even a concept or thought.

maybe. It all depends on how it is used, much like the internet. There will be certain applications in VR that are solely for creativity. Such as 3-d virtual sculpting, virtual painting etc, and then there are virtual music interfaces, virtual light shows.
Those will probably pale in comparison to the virtual role playing. Living part time in a virtual play would be sweet, like the ultimate D&D
One of my favorite ideas for a virtual business I've had is a virtual nightclub.
