Vermiculite coir bucket tek

daemon50/50 used vermiculite
I was told that's not nessecary to do that or case if it isnt PE.
So, i didn't use it. Not sure if i'll regret it. Can I add the Verm after? Didnt really measure the water either, I plan on dumping it to find field cap through a screen. I should be ok without the VERM, no? or should i waste the brick and do a different brick?
I also didn't have a candy therm, but dumped a rolling boil into a home depot bucket and then put a sleeping bag around it (yes, i used the rubber-lined top) for about an hour and a half. Havent mixed with spawn yet.

Ive seen it done with success.
This is an example i found that is pure coir, cased with pure verm
Definitely not optimal or best for water retention but it will work
Edit: scroll to the top of that post. I linked it to a random comment in the post on accident

Should have added before pasteurizing. You want to pasteurize the verm with the coir. If you're going to add unpasteurized verm to pasteurized coir, then you dont have pasteurized substrate. I have had plenty of successful grows with unpasteurized, in fact Damions5050 doesn't even call for proper pasteurization. Experience and wisdom has taught me to properly pasteurize every time. So its up to you, add the verm and use your unpasteurized substrate, or just start over.

Coir will work fine by itself. It actually holds quite a bit of water.

Wait..... what is PROPER pasteurization then?

The bucket tek is technically partial sterilization because you dump boiling water over the coir.
So part of the coir goes over 170 which is the limit for safe pasteurization.
Proper pasteurization is maintaining core temps of substrate Between 140 and 160 for a bare minimum of 1 hour
You can get away with partially or fully sterilizing coir, but not other subs like manure. That needs proper pasteurization

cool kids do the bucket tek with 170 degree water, not boiling water

Lol is someone seriously suggesting to pasteurize verm in this thread? I've added verm straight out of the bag to my already bucket-tek'd coir before with no problems.
I also sterilize my coir/verm every time now instead of bothering with pasteurization for coir.
Also his name is Damion5050. There is no 50/50 anywhere except for casing mix.

This is the original elementary coir tek in which he uses boiling water.
Ya, cron made a redeveloped version, but i was answering their question on why the original is not proper pasteurization, which is what i did.
Edit: maybe it was muda who did the bucket tek revisited. I forget

I wasnt saying that the verm needs to be pasteurized (I mean I guess it does read that way, especially the unpasteurized verm part) but I was getting at that if he started with pasteurized coir and then added to it, technically it is no longer pasteurized. Proper pasteurization is not needed with coir/verm. Coir/verm is very contam resistant. I still like to properly pasteurize my sub though, ease of mind.

That's sort of like saying the substrate isn't pasteurized anymore just because you added some gypsum. Vermiculite is a mineral and doesn't harbor the same kinds of shit that organic matter does.

Very well put. Thank you. I knew verm was a mineral, but didnt really think about it like that. I think of everything I work with as organic in this hobby so it just becomes second nature. Thanks for the clarification.

That said you may as well add it in with your pasteurization or sterilization. I've used it out of the bag plenty of times, but it just makes more sense to get your field capacity and final substrate mixed before you apply the heat.

I've been using straight coir gypsum. Seems like the same shit with or without the verm, and it's cheaper.
Can't scientifically back that up and say I did the same perfect isolate grow on both or anything, but it colonizes in like four days an 1:1.75 with my shit.
You can wring out excess water, though it's a bit off a pain in the ass. Verm would be useful to nail the hydration. Add it until field cap feels right. No need to pasteurize.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...
