I'm getting my motorcycle license this weekend and was wondering if anyone rides? Reccomendations on which bike to get?

I ride, what bike depends on what style of bike you like, what you want it for, experience with em, are you restricted by CC or anything?

The moose.. word. those are nice, maybe to expensive though.
Tipssurfer.. Those are both nice bro. Definitely don't want a cruiser to start with.
Puremadness.. I went to the motorcycle shop a couple days ago and i want to start off with a standard street bike. probably under 5k. I want it to ride to the city for school about a 20 minute drive. CC?

I usually recommend a Honda CBR 500 for total beginners, good solid bikes. CC is the cylinder capacity, bigger the cylinder the more power it can put out per stroke.

I'm trying to restore one and it almost seems like it will be a year before I finish.
I rode it once though and wow it was like flying through the air.

Sounds like you may be interested in an Enduro style bike. On/off road capable. I don't own one yet but when the right used one comes around I'll be jumping on it.

No offense, but something tells me you getting a bike is a disaster waiting to happen. You don't seem to know the first thing about them and no weekend class is going to be able to teach you all you need to know. If you don't even know a crotch rocket isn't meant to go off road, how are you going to know the handling characteristics of them? You're gonna get on a crotch rocket and high side it the first time you try to make a fast hard turn.
Either get a dual purpose or a 250cc cruiser. Get them used and cheap, because I'm foreseeing your first accident measured in months or weeks.

i looked at a 250cc a couple days ago. It looked nice. And like i said before i have never ridden a bike. The course I'm taking is for beginners who have never ridden. I realize I'm a total noob and going to read up on everything more after the class this weekend. I wish i had a friend close by who had a motorcycle but i don't. lol. if I don't feel on ready ill wait till the next spring to ride, because i don't want to ride in the winter here in New England if I don't feel comfortable. smugjerry:

If it weren't for the fact that you obviously know nothing about them, I'd tell you buying your first bike brand new is a huge waste of money. It loses half it's value as soon you walk out the door, and it's value is going to drop considerably more as you learn what not to do on a bike and drop it or lay it down. Though if you wanna save yourself a bunch of money get to reading and learn all that you need to check for then hit up Craigslist.
If you get it brand new, treat the road as if it were ice. New tires suck when you're only on 2 wheels. I learned that one the hard way, luckily I learned it while not going too fast.

It would also really help if you told us what your are looking for? Do you want to Track days? do you want to commute? do you want to dirt? do you want to sand?

Said he wants it for commuting to school which is a 20 minute drive. But he also seems to want to be able to go off road.
He needs something dual purpose unless he just wants to forego the offroading. I would also feel a lot safer recommending a dual purpose bike given his lack of experience. They would be a lot more forgiving than a crotch rocket.

I used to for years.
I had a 99 zx-6, and a 07 gsxr 750.
i preferred the ninja by a long shot.
these days I would probably look towards a naked bike though.
the zx1000 was always pretty cool

full disclosure:
didn't read the thread at all before I posted. if you've never ridden before, something in the 250-500 range would be best to start for a few years.
the ninja 250 is an ultra classic. I've ridden one plenty and they're really rad, and get like ~70mpg.
only downside is if you're gonna be putting in a lot of time of the freeway, you want a bigger motor.

[gradient:#BDB5A6,#75674A]I would really look into some kind of enduro style bike. Not only are they versatile but probably can take a bit more of a beating. I dont dont personally have experience on one of these but I hear this style bike is one of the more enjoyable styles to ride.[/gradient]

yea supermoto would probs be the best choice if you HAVE to go dirt. Personally I dont like the dirt and much prefer the track and street corners which is why I have a supersport.
But supermoto can be fun to commute on and dont take long to switch to dirt mode. (youll need to learn how to change to knobbies tyres and do maintenance work though)

Here in the Netherlands its mandatory to take three exams
1. Special Maneuvers (closed area)
Slalom, figure eights, emergency braking, even some parking
2. Theory
This one is actually pretty difficult for a lot of people
3. Driving test (open road)
You drive around getting directions through an ear-piece from the examiner following you in a car
It took me 11 classes to pass the first exam and then another 13 to pass the second one. This is only a little bit above average. I did travel abroad for a total of about three months during the entire course though.
For the special maneuvers I rode a Honda CB500. Then for the road lessons I could upgrade to a Yamaha Fazer Sport 600, which I did.
So when I got my license (passed all the exams the first time) I already had more than 30 hours of experience riding somewhat powerful motorcycles.
For my first bike I got the Honda Shadow, which is nice but not that fast. Its also not ideal for city driving and/or commuting. Its actually for sale at the moment.
I bought the Hornet 900 (or 919) recently to commute more. It handles like a dream and to me at least has almost unlimited power.
During my lessons I slowly accumulated a nice collection of riding gear as that can run into some numbers too. Hi-Viz helmet, leather motorcycle jacket and boots, riding pants and very good gloves. When I know I am going to do freeway speeds I also wear a CE level 2 back protector
You can def start out on a 500/600 CC bike. Just do not go for a bike that gets reviews like 'mental', 'aggressive' and so on. There are plenty of beginner suitable bikes available.
The other day a Hayabusa stood next to me in traffic. The guy revved it a bit and that thing scared the hell outta me

I agree that certain types of bikers are quite faggy
Two of my friends dads went through an episode like that. Both of em (around 45 years old) took like five times (and close to a year) to get their license and then they joined MCs and out came the extremely loud motorcycles, leather chaps and jackets with skulls. It was hilarious and sad at the same time
Other than that I think motorcycles are a great mode of transportation. I am not a petrolhead by any means. You are not going to se me spending my free time polishing all the chrome bits. Like cars they are objects I use.
Now surfboards, thats another story
