Contamination precautions for a new grower?

Hey guys I was hoping some of you might be be able to help out and give me some precautionary measures to take while making my BRF cakes and inoculating my jars to reduce the chance of contamination. I'm a brand new grower and I'm pretty paranoid about contams. I really want my first grow to go well and have as little problems as possible.

Hey man! It's very simple to create a clean area to do your inoculations and stuff in. Read this:
Still Air Box

Thanks for the link man. My biggest concern still is how do I keep my kitchen clean enough while making and sterilizing the cakes?

I do the sterile techniques on tile or hardwood Carpet probably won't hurt you but it still carries all kinds of pollen, spore, and dust buildup. I see people doin sterile technique on carpet successfully, but first time try cleaning the bathroom with ur clean air box in there.
Just make sure it's clean In this game cleanliness is your best friend, dirty clothes, dirty body, dirty hands, dirty countertop, dirty floor, dirty air, etc....
All these could create the source of ur failure. Clean clean clean!
Good luck!

You dont need to be cautious as you make them. Treat it as you were baking a cake
After you've sterilised though, take them to a clean area, preferably in your still air box until they are cool enough for you to handle

Can't I just let them cool in the pot I steamed them in or would the still air box be my best bet?

Yeah, people usually let them cool overnight in their PC or pot.
I just take em out when relatively cool enough to handle and to SAB, so that i can throw more in the pc

U will want to keep the PC closed until your ready to inoculate and the jars are at room temp, then take it into the place you have made extremely clean before opening.
A still air box makes things much more likely to stay sterile... It is not necessary, but highly recommended
If you are making only a couple of cakes it may not be necessary for you, but don't be disappointed if one or two don't make it... Esp if your growing from spores, this will take longer and more time to colonize means more chance for a contam to pop up.
A glove box or still air box is easier to clean and keep sterile than a whole bathroom! It will increase chances of success if done right.
I went a couple years back in he day without one and my casings were 50/50.. Not so good eh? When I did break down and make one my success went way up, but by that time all my extra work had already began to burn me out... And I didn't keep things up, I was doing twice the work I needed to..
Have I answered your question? If you plan on keeping this hobby going, I would highly suggest it

Thanks for replying in detail and making it easy to understand. I'm definitely going with the still air box and I'm not using a PC I just planned on steam sterilizing. Is that going to be an issue or no?

Seems like Yerow and I are typing these up at the same time
Yes you can steam them in a pot... Just do a google search "growing mushrooms without a pressure cooker" some good reading should pop up!
I am unable to open up other pages at the moment to post a link
