Question: For Solution For Fixing Too Wet of Substrate

Can I add more vermiculite to the top layer of my jars and re-pressure cook? They were already inoculated. (2 and a half weeks of no growth.) I'm wondering if that extra top layer added will cause the moisture to draw upward into it, and allow the moisture to lessen in the actual mixture.
Anyone also know if a second round of pressure cooking is alright for the substrate? Your answers, as always, are appreciated to the fullest.

I think I've read about people PC'ing a second time with success. Personally I would mix in any added verm.

If your gut is telling you that your substrate is too wet, id go with that gut feeling, and just toss and start over. But there is never a reason not to try since your not risking contaminating other cultures. The extra verm would draw some moisture from the lower substrate. Anything inside a sealed enclosed environment will struggle to be homeostatic, so moisture will seek any lower RH than the rest of the enclosure. I personally dont feel like it would be able to pull enough moisture out of your substrate. Never hurts to see what happens. Probably been a little too long to recook and knock up. Not my forte with cakes though. I know grains would be a no go. People do it, I've read a lot of different experiences with people using re sterilized grain. Some with decent success. I would never trust it, I feel too much moisture content is lost.

Just start over. If you open it will contam and if you re sterilize it will kill your spores.
I would just hold onto what you've got because it might still happen but wouldnt try to salvage.

Thanks for the input all. I will play the guinea pig here and report back with a failure or success. I think I'll pour the jars into a mixing bowl and just add a bit more verm, honestly, if you think it won't draw enough from the top. Shouldn't take long.

Heh, that was the point of it. I've got spores to spare and planned on re-inoculating. Just hope the over-cooked substrate doesn't suck.

I want to see to wet also. You should still have germination if it's too wet. And the jars shouldn't be too wet if you followed instructions

I don't know if images would tell us anything on this matter. I dumped one of the jars to feel the consistency. It didn't feel too wet after all. It was extremely sticky. Last two previous grows went fine; now I'm starting to believe it's this pesky strain (Puerto Rican). I remember it taking a relatively long time.
