Most important difference between winter packing and summer packing is your sleeping bag.  As long as you have a bag rated to keep you warm at the overnight low temperatures you will endure, then everything else should be OK.  During the day when you are active the cold is not such a factor.  Obviously you want some warmer clothing but thats just common sense.

There is nothing worse that trying to enjoy a trip but laying there all night shivering and praying for the sunrise.  Trust me!!  I have had this experience!!  The night can seem to last forever in this circumstance.  This is one experience you don't want!

My bacpacking bag is rated to 0 degrees farenheit.  You can get them rated as low as about 50 below!  And also remember, if you are gonna be sleeping on the snow or any frozen ground (this includes setting up your tent on such) then get a good sleeping pad to put between you and the ground.  You will lose a lot of body heat at night laying on ice!

Now, if I could just go with you.... :frown:

Yeah the sleeping bag is crucial! And one of those pads to put it on is a must. Lots of socks. Keep a pair of dry socks and other clothes for sleeping.

Ive gone hiking in the winter, over small mountains. Alot of fun!

Make sure your tent is water+wind-proof and keeps heat in. Those little cans of sterno are a nice treat at night for heating up the tent.

yall can go TTS and pattern if you want. were thinking of the ole creek area of glacier park. basically cutting the bottom tip of the park off.....annie is down so im just trying to make flow as good as possible so she will go again.

we will have pads(mine is a 3/4 but im gonna put other shit under my feet part like coat, pants etc) . i was considering also putting one of those foil survival blankets between the pads and the floor of the tent. i got one of the candle lanterns...i never used sterno..would they have similiar heat output?

anyway since its really the 1st time for us at this intensity were just doing a 2 day/1 night.

thanks for the input.

I should've learned that lesson about 10 years ago!  I can't get the wife to do anything less than a Motel 6 anymore!! Of course I can't blame her, she hears all the stories from these extreme outings I take with my buddy and she thinks everything I do is gonna be like that.

And then I say "Hey, lets take a little hike." and she replies "Last time someone said that to me was at Christmas in Crown Point and look where that ended up!!"

I know it sounds fucked up...but sprinkle a dash of Cayenne pepper into your socks to keep your feet warm...but not too much. Also just before you go to bed, wrap one of the rocks that was around the fire in a towel or thick blanket and put in at the foot of your sleeping bag. It'll keep you warm all night.

Looks beautiful.  I would've loved to have been there!  I spent those 2 days curled up on the couch playing my new game (Tony Hawk's Underground)

oDin, nice pics! That looks like it must have been great. Glad you had a fun time, and hopefully many more to come buddy. My girlfriend and I have recently started backpacking too, and it really is wonderful!
