Questions about starting a low maintenance oudoor grow
    #22178778 - 09/02/15 03:52 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hello Shroomery.  I have been an active member of the sister site on and off for a solid 6 years and now I am finally trying to grow some shrooms.  I have read all of the outdoor teks, but I still have some questions.  Thank you in advance for reading and for any advice.

I live in New Orleans, and I work offshore- so I go out for 3 weeks at a time and then have 10 days off.  I want to start a perpetual outdoor grow with my roommate but he is kind of flaky and lazy (but trustworthy).  I'm not lazy but need my operation to be pretty low maintenance.  Right now I have 12 fully colonized B+ brown rice/vermiculite PF cakes that I am going to attempt to fruit indoors tonight.  When they are done fruiting I want to use the spent cakes to spawn something outdoors.

Let me know if this would produce mushrooms-
When the cakes stop fruiting indoors, grind up the 12 spent cakes (should I blend into a "slurry" or just break into chunks?), and mix into a pasteurized outdoor substrate (something like 1 part coir, 1 park horse poop, 1 part black kow, and 1 part vermiculite?), and put that in a well drained pot located outside. Keeping this moist in rainy/humid New Orleans should require minimal effort.

Budget is not an issue, I have a good job.  It just needs to be a relatively hands off operation.

Again, any advice or tips are greatly appreciated.

So, one of my brf cakes that was about 10% colonized got some green mold.  I broke off all the mycelia and mixed it in with some sterilized substrate that was something like 50% vermiculite, and the remaining half equal parts black kow, horse poop, and coco coir. I put all that in a potted citrus plant. I doubt it will work but I'll see how it goes.

Don't doubt anything brother checkout my latest thread, I expected my one pin to be shriveled up and now I'm attempting an invitro grow.

If your area has suitable conditions you might just pick your favorite tek and follow it.

Once you follow enough teks you'll realize the common themes and consistencies that will allow you to improvise your own methods that suit your own needs.

Only reason I haven't tossed mine in a hole yet is because I live where its liable to get hot and dry within a few days.

My suggestion is just to follow an outdoor tek, I'd say use moes. Follow the tek perfectly and have your roommate hydrate the outdoor patch whenever it goes a little without raining and mushrooms should grow well
Just my nonexpert opinion tho

Thanks guys. I read Moes tek. I'll probably do something like that.

Again, I suggest doing something exactly like that. The closer you follow a tek the better chance you have of mushrooms growing. Good luck

Moe's tek is not very specific at all.

So did you ever get a grow going?

Even though it's not an outdoor tek, I think psychedelic truffles would be ideal for you.  All you do is make spawn jars and let them sit for months.  Your schedule should be no problem, no chance of outdoor flushes while you're gone, ans almost no chance anyone would ever know what the fuck they were looking at if your house were to be searched while you were away.

Check it out, I think it's a perfect fit.  You need a pc, spawn jars, and a mexicana/galindoi/tamp print.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17910649
Also check stonesun's guide.  They are essentially the same though.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...

Yeah I got a grow going. My first 12 brf cakes should be on their second or third flush by now. I know the first flush produced quite a bit (I'm still offshore but my friends and neighbors have been eating my shrooms like fiends.) I'm going to experiment with the spent cakes when I get home. I'll post an update with whatever I end up trying sometime in the next week or so.

Thanks for the tip machiavelliavore, but I'm dreaming of large scale low maintenance outdoor stuff. I live in a climate where cubes are native so it should be easy. I'll read up on your tubers though. Might be a fun experiment.

I also ordered some P. cyanescens spores for experimentation. I used to do cyans all the time in high school but have not been able to find any because of the drought in CA.

So I have decided to do an hpoo tek using my spent brf cakes and possibly a couple fresh cakes. I have about 4.5 gallons of horse poop drying out on a tarp in a spare room and it smells like a barn. Does anybody know if I could dry it in my oven at 170 degrees or would that mess it up?

I really should. I'm somewhat technologically behind these days. Is there a shroomery post about how to post pictures taken from a phone safely, or do I have to Google it?

So if you read the second post in this thread you will see that I put a tiny bit of spawn in some sterilized substrate outdoors in a potted plant. I had given up on it (never watered it except maybe pissed on it a few times) and I checked it today and it's full of mycelium lol. Might be some random wild species but maybe not.

I currently have some soaking wet substrate baking in my oven that it about 75% horse manure and the remaining 25% vermiculite and coco coir. I'm going to grind up 12 spent brf cakes and maybe 4 new ones and put it all in a recycling tuv outdoors. I'll have my roomies water it and report back to y'all.

The spent cakes were all shrunken and some of them had mold. I just used 5 new ones.  I blended up 3 and sliced up 2 and mixed them into the substrate.  It is all in a recycling bin on the north side of my house.  Now it is just a waiting game.
