When to take cacti seedlings off heat mat?
    #22177556 - 09/02/15 10:13 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I want to free up heat mats so i need to know if i can move some seedlings. I know it would be different depending on species and climate, so firstly, heres the cacti species Im asking about.

Lophophora Williamsi, Trichocereus, Astrophytum, Mammillaria, Saguaro(Carnegie Gigantea), Gymnocalycium, Ariocarpus Retusus, Melocactus, Echinocactus, Ferocactus.

Climate is late winter, early spring, but its still pretty cold. Ambient temp in the seedlings room would be ranging from minimum 10^C to max 29^C at the extremes, but most days ranging between 16^C and 24^C. These heat mats are adding about 6^C and the waterbed heater mat is adding about 9^C.

So... how old do they need to be before i can place them without bottom heating? Is it wait until i see spines develop? How about if the weather heats up a little more?

Thanks

You can take the heat mats away right now, the temps are well within the accepted range for those species (the Melocacti should be the most sensitive but I don't think they will die with 10C minima). But you risk stopping their development for a while. If you can, wait a few more weeks for the weather to warm up a bit.

I would let the soil dry out completely before you remove the heat. That way if it's too cold for them they won't be sitting in moist soil.

:whathesaid:

Try adding some stones to the top of your pots to hold heat from the lights/sun
