hello, friends
after a few amazing journeys, I decided to try my hand at growing my own specimen.
I started by purchasing the medium sized kit from Midwest. after it arrived, I still waited to inoculate for close to a month because I wanted to read and learn as much as possible. it seems a lot of people are staunchly against kits, and while I understand the logic behind it, I work and go to school full time and it was worth the time saving to have everything in one purchase and get to it.
I inoculated last night, following this procedure.
1) set my colonization chamber to a steady 81°. 2) put it in my roughly 4x4x8 closet space. 3)sprayed the closet space with bleach/ water mix. also sprayed a heavy layer of Lysol in the closet 4) while the sprays settled, I took a shower and got super clean. I put on a change of clothes that I put in a plastic bag and sprayed down with Lysol. also put on a new pair of rubber gloves 5) back in the closet, I wiped down the shelf I used as the workspace down with a Lysol wipe. 6) used my uv-c wand and went over almost every inch of the closet and especially the workspace, hold the light about 1" from all surfaces. 7) I set my uvc wand up on a stand to work under. 8) I inoculated 12 jars, 4 golden teacher, 4 penis envy, and 4 b+. 9) while injecting, I would hold the needle tip directly under the uvc, light my lighter, flame the tip til red, squirt to cool, and inject.
I should add that all the jar surfaces were scanned under uvc light prior to inoculation
the closet still smells very disinfected lol. I'm really hoping that my sanitation practices were effective.
another concern I have is that my penis envy spores were all clumped in the plastic cap of the syringe. I'm really hoping some spores made it into the jar because I was excited about that type in particular
feel free to give your 2¢

If any of my mushroom grow was at 81F I would put the AC on. 68-72f is perfect 65-75 is great. 75-81 maybe a little quicker but not worth it.
Ditch bleach and the goofy uv light and just use appropriate sterile technique.
Biggest noob mistakes are thinking sanitizers and uv lights will protect or save you. Your techniques and skill help you not chemicals and lights.
Good luck

its short sighted to call uvc light "goofy". I use a uvc autoclave to sterilize the tools in my profession, its very effective

I know when and where they're effective. A closet isn't one of those places. You're paying attention to everything but what you should have.
Understand how contamination vectors work and you can cut out all of the uncessary noob mistake of trying to "sterilize" a space. Not even sanitizing it, and really just disinfecting
Only the inoculation needs to be sterile you can do that with a bic lighter but injections themselves are not the best method anyway

I would recommend using at least a still air box. I've done open air inoculations and had it work but more failures that way then with a SAB.
