When to degraft loph from pereskiopsis

I have a loph grafted to a pereskiopsis. It grew from like half a cm to roughly an inch in just a few weeks. Its just CRAZY!
Anyways, its looking a bit too big for the plant it is grafted to. My question is, at what point should it be degrafted? I am considering grafting it to a little brigdessi I have.

whenever you feel like it. An idea, would be to slice the loph through the middle, instead of completely degrafting. Then you are left with a stump that will put out pups, as well as your graft to bridgesii. Do you have different grafting stock? Bridgesii is ok.

I have two brigdessi that are little babies. They are about 5" tall, on their original roots, not even an inch wide. I have several other cacti ranging from 12"-56"

If you graft to your bridgesii, you will be forever stunting that plant to 5" unless you degraft from it. Also the root system on a small plant like that will not necessarily produce the super increased growth that a more established root stock might. Yes, it will still be faster than on its own roots, but will suffer from the young root system. Just my opinion of course.

So, should I graft it to a larger, more established cacti? I have some logs that have created pups, which are getting pretty big and fat. The root systems on these are quite impressive. maybe this would be a better option.

Do you have any columns that you could graft to? The idea is to make the loph scion your growth tip, and not have it share growth with any other pups or growth tips.

I let the stock get somewhat woody. Then I just take it off. Twist and pop and out it comes.

When you pull it off the logs? That's what I was considering doing. Just twisting them off. They look like they'd break free pretty easy.
Then maybe I could root one of those and graft to it? I have one that seems to have excellent genetics. It rooted way faster than the others, and apparently I overwatered the pot, but this one was the only one that didn't rot at the base. Maybe it would make good grafting stock.

Ohhhhh. Your comment makes sense now, ferrel. When I first read it, I thought you were saying that's how you degrafts.... 'Just twist it off and it breaks free easily'....

I've degrafted 2-4cm buttons off from pereskiopsis.. Smaller(1-2cm) if I graft them to trichs. Depends diameter of stock and vascular ring of trich.
Rooting in to soil; approx one inch size buttons seems to root fast and good.
Any size proper cut buttons gonna root anyway. Root grow of buttons isn't so fast but after years they have new tap roots.

I am trying to get this bad boy a big as possible before rooting it on its own. I wanna have a 3"+ loph!
I am absolutely AMAZED how fast this thing has grown though, I must say that.
Can you graft a 1" loph to a 5" diameter stock trichocereus, or do you want them to be closer in size?

Most definitely can. Even smaller. Size will catch up. Here is my biggest of degrafts.

First on peres, then to a fast growing trich and then to root on its own.

Wow, now that is an impressive looking cactus! How long did it take to grow to that size?

Like 3 yrs or so. But I give credit to my fast growing trich for giving it that extreme growth. It's been on its own roots like 2 yrs or so.

It really is a beauty. It's funny how much I've learned to appreciate the beauty of a nice cactus since I've been growing them, because I didn't always feel that way. I bet once you have a fine specimen like that you wouldn't even consider eating it, hmm? Do you get a lot of seeds from it?

Nah, I don't plan to eat mine either. I just want to have a big old loph to show off... If I were planning on eating them I'd have like 10 grafted right now, and I'd be trying to figure out how to get them to a decent size to eat, not trying to get one big boy!
