Are you ready to die?
    #2217692 - 01/04/04 12:59 AM (20 years, 29 days ago)

This is probably a morbid post, considering we just celebrated the start of a new year, and it's supposed to be a time of fresh starts and renewed commitments, but I just drove 1500 miles in 2 days, and I had a lot of time to think.  :nut:

One of the things that popped into my brain was whether I am ready to die.  Okay, I'm not ready to die.  I haven't won the lottery yet, for one thing.

But not just "am I ready to die?", but if I died right now, would I be ready to go?  Are my beliefs in order?  Have I accomplished whatever I should have accomplished?  Will I leave a void, or will I leave my mark?

And this all falls back to the impetus for my "seeker" status, as to the meaning of life, the journey on which I embarked approximately 2 years ago....

What is the meaning of our existence here on planet Earth?  Why are we here?  What are we, individually, supposed to accomplish?  Parasite or paragon?

In the philosophy book I am reading, it constantly says that mans greatest fear is his own demise. I've talked to plenty of people who just cannot accept the fact that they are going to die. Once during a discussion with a man as to why he wasn't an organ donor, he replied "It's morbid for me to imagine donating my organs, I just cannot accept that one day I will die."

I hear people say things like that and it often makes me feel "perverse" because I totally do not feel that way. I was at a pretty wild party New Year's and I could not help but notice the blatant contrast between me and my peers. I seemed really morose and mellow compared to the rest of the wild lusty people. Perhaps it is because I am an INTJ, or perhaps I just lack a certain extroverted drive...

I'm 19 and I feel like I have accepted my Mortality. I'm not ready to die, but if I found out that I had terminle cancer with 3 months to live, I'd be alright with that.

I wholeheartedly look forward to dying.

It will be the ultimate experience.

I don't mind kickin around these parts until it happens, though.

Before I comment on the rest of your post, why did you feel "morose and mellow"? What does that mean, to you?

Everyone dies mang. I like the song 'always look on the bright side of life' by monty python. They sing it when jesus and them are all getting crucified at the end of "The life of Brian".

I'm not ready to die, if ready means prepared that is.

Dammit, no fair making me think about deep shit when I'm all fucked up!

My answer to this one's totally different now than it would have been a couple years ago.  I know damn well I said in an e-mail to you back then that I didn't really give a shit if I died 'cause I had nothing left I needed to do.  Funny how things change...

That is so fucking cool, and makes my question even deeper now, based on your answer, and because I know in what type of research you are involved.

In my opinion, as long as you are alive, there is always something left that needs to be done....

And what you wrote prompts another question:

If you're not ready to die, if there's something left that you haven't done yet that you've been planning to do, what are you planning to do, and wtf are you waiting for?

I've been ready to die since I was sixteen. It involved visions not induced by drugs (and no, there's no schizo or epeleptic history in my family), and I came to the conclusion that this was something 'someone' or perhaps my subconscious was trying to tell me: when you die, however gory the fashion, whatever the reason, you die. No use fussing about it, "Tough luck, kiddo. Shit happens, yes, even to you."

Of late I'm kinda feeling like my soul is on its last run through this universe, and when I die it's going to be final. This is not some ego-trip or anything, I'm not claiming to have reached Enlightenment or anything. Heck, I can't even turn wine into water when I pass a checkpost for alcohol abuse. Nonono, none of that. It just feels like I'm very, very, VERY ancient a soul, and I'm... how should I say... looking forward to the end. Mind you, I take great pleasure in life, but if I have to see the beauty of this world for yet another lifetime, I'll kill myself. You dig?

i am ready to die only because i few it as a natural process. why fight what i can never hope to control? i might as well make it easier on my self by just accept my own mortality.

and if i were to find myself in a life threatening situation, i feel this outlook would enable me to keep a cool head and possibly even make it out alive.

If they died before me and then i died i dont it would realy bother me as much. It would just be the ultimate trip that i could enjoy because i wouldnt have any ties to this world.

"One of the things that popped into my brain was whether I am ready to die."

these are all my opinion btw

like everything, death is an experience, and experiences are meant to be had. To me you can't really be "ready" for something that you haven't experienced.  Then again there are those who say we die and get reborn and stuff, and while that may be true, it also may not. I think it would be hard to prepare for something you've never experienced.

"but if I died right now, would I be ready to go? Are my beliefs in order? Have I accomplished whatever I should have accomplished? Will I leave a void, or will I leave my mark?"

the only mark to make is on yourself, or do you want fame? why do you want to be remembered?  I know I used to till I realized that I am just a small speck in very big world, in a very big universe (multiverse perhaps?)

what do you mean by beliefs in order?  in order for what? Is there any requirement for us, or is this a requirement from ourselves?? It's like we have to believe in this or believe in that. Well what if your belief's are wrong? Well when did it ever revolve around being right or wrong? It would be unfair to judge yourself that way without even having the capabilites to know.  don't you think so?

"Have I accomplished whatever I should have accomplished?"

What can you accomplish here?  you know what you need to accomplish and don't let anyone tell you different.  if you're not happy with the way things are, and you can do something about it, do it!! you'll accomplish something.  to others it may not be an accomplishment, but to you it will be! and that's all that matters isn't it?

"What is the meaning of our existence here on planet Earth?"

define your own meaning that works for you.  I'm serious because in order for it to really have any autenticity it has to come from you.  you have to agree with it.  you said you were a seeker, well you are doing exactly what you need to do, and thus accomplishing things.
my reasons to exist is to do many things, but all revolve around experiencing.  it's fun and easy to do since we're doing it all the time. I don't even know if that's meaning hehe

Why are we here? What are we, individually, supposed to accomplish? Parasite or paragon?

maybe we are here to learn what it means to have silence. when we die the silence comes (as maybe peace as well?). Some kind of noise is oging on.  and if you are lucky to be in the boonies, there's still the internal dialogue to deal with.

maybe when we leave this rhelm we return to "the void" or the "nothingness" (remember Never ending story?) and thus we are everything since everything is in the void.  heh I dunno, it could be many things.  many sound ok, many dohn't, I guess it all really depends on you.  after all you're the one that will be judging yourself.

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

I like to think I am prepared for death, but I am most definitley not prepared, no way.
Sometimes when I'm feeling great, I am comfortable with my mortality, and have a sort of 'no worries' attitude toward life... ya know, "oh well if I die tomorow, I bloody well die tomorow, can't do nothing about it".
But sometimes when I am low, I am frightened at the very thought of dying.

When I was a kid, I could've sworn that I would live forever. I thought that when I was older, 'they' would find the elixir of life, or that I would personally find the secret of eternal life. But now I'm much less optimistic, but I still wish that I could live forever. I want to know everything, understand everything, be able to do anything and master every thing that there is to master.

There have been too many times when I have prayed for God to spare my life when I think I'm about to die (when I'm tripping or otherwise), so I definitley don't think I'm at terms with my own mortality just yet.

"something left that you haven't done yet that you've been planning to do"

I have done enough and am satisfied.

"what are you planning to do, and wtf are you waiting for?"

I have a short list of things I would like to do but if death were to take me now there is only one thing I would regret.

"But not just "am I ready to die?", but if I died right now, would I be ready to go?"

I am ready but I stay for one who isn't.

"Are my beliefs in order?"

Beliefs, yes.  Life, no.

"Have I accomplished whatever I should have accomplished?"

That is difficult to answer.  I don't know what I 'should' have accomplished.  I lived my life.  Some parts were incredible and some parts were incredibly horrible.

"Will I leave a void, or will I leave my mark?"

Nearly every mark we could make would be temporal.  I have added substance but not because I was interested in leaving a mark.  I have my name written in bronze on buildings for my accomplishments.  So what.  I really would rather not be remembered at all.

"What is the meaning of our existence here on planet Earth? Why are we here? What are we, individually, supposed to accomplish? Parasite or paragon? "

Those questions are exactly the type I don't discuss publicly.

Nice thread!

ROFL!! That is a great line!

Until recently, I didn't want to die because I would miss this life. I love life, I love people, I love watching the way the Universe works. But I'm starting to understand better that life doesn't stop when you die. Dying is part of living. I won't miss life because I will continue on, just in a different form, in a different place.

I know someone else who believes he is an ancient soul, and I believe he is, too. He knows so much about life, and everything. I think I've been here a few times, but I don't know if I've cleaned up my karma and learned everything I'm supposed to learn, and I don't know if I've done everything I'm supposed to do.

lamblancer:  apparently he likes to watch me suffer.

kaiowas:  the only mark to make is on yourself, or do you want fame? why do you want to be remembered?

It's okay if I'm not remembered.  I hope my kids remember me, though.

I wrote all those questions without really thinking about my answers.  I think I would agree with you that the only mark to make is on yourself.  When I do things for people, I don't think that I am making a mark.  I think I am doing what I do on behalf of God, so why should I be remembered, anyways.

I used to think I would want to be remembered by this world, until I realized that all of this doesn't really matter.  It matters in a spiritual context, but not in a material context.

Edit:  I've changed my mind on this temporarily, until I get sorted out what I wrote at the bottom.

MM:  I have done enough and am satisfied.

Me, too.  I have a family and I have a career.  I don't have anything left I feel I need to do to finish, or fix anything.  As far as "me" goes, that is.  I think all I have left to do is to grow spiritually, and help people.

MM:  I have a short list of things I would like to do but if death were to take me now there is only one thing I would regret.

As far as the things of this life go, I have a few things left I would like to do.  A few challenges, just for fun.  And since I no longer have fear, I don't have to worry about failing.

MM:  Some parts were incredible and some parts were incredibly horrible.

Yes, I can relate to that statement.  I've thought about some of the things that were incredibly horrible, and I've learned to accept them.  I believe that if I hadn't gone through some of those horrible periods, I wouldn't be who I am today, and I wouldn't be able to help people as well as I can.  I have clients who sometimes have problems that go beyond the scope of the legal realm.  I have been through enough schitt that I can relate to people on just about anything.

I also think that I probably had some bad karma from a previous life, or lives, and I think I had to go through what I've been through to fix my karma.  I think it's fixed, now.

MM:  Nearly every mark we could make would be temporal. I have added substance but not because I was interested in leaving a mark. I have my name written in bronze on buildings for my accomplishments. So what. I really would rather not be remembered at all.

I can understand not caring about leaving a "permanent" mark, but why would you rather not be remembered at all?  I don't care if I'm not remembered.  It's not important.  But I'd prefer to be remembered by someone.

Okay, shouldn't we want to be remembered for something?  It would seem to me that if we make it through life without being remembered for something, then maybe we didn't really live life.  Of course, MM, it appears you will be remembered, but for those of us who haven't left a mark, have we really lived life?  Or does that matter?  How big a mark?

I think material marks are nice, because it commemorates something we've done in our lives.  I don't think everyone has to have a material marked, but what a nice thing to be remembered by.  But assuming most of us will probably not have our names printed on the sides of buildings, or on plaques, or whatever, shouldn't we want to leave enough of a mark to be remembered by?

There is another way of looking at this. I want to make the world a better place, BUT I don't want any of the credit. I prefer to be "behind the scenes". If I had my choice I would have the memory of me fade with the death of my family. I have a bug about this. I don't want accolades and I don't want kudos of any kind. In short, I don't want to be remembered.

id be willing to bet that if you were dead you wouldnt care at all.  however, i suppose that depends on what you believe is in store for us at the end of life :smirk:

there have been times in my life where ive felt the same way though.  ive worried that if i were to die at this point it would be hard on my friends and family.  i wouldnt say that i felt this way due to a big ego, but rather that i was overly afraid of my effect on other people's feelings in general (eventually i learned that no matter what you say, someone is bound to be offended or hurt and id rather be myself than pc).  however, as ive lived ive begun to realize that death is absolutely inevitable.  like i said before, i feel that im ready to die.  perhaps a better way to put it is to say that i dont fear death or dying and if it comes for me then i will truly have no choice.  until then i'll take life over death and strive to be content with the current situation.  definately an excellent post, good stuff to think about, ^5

I don't want accolades, either. But I want to matter while I'm here, I guess.

So do I.

In fact I would say if a person doesn't want to 'matter' there is something wrong with them.  How else could we have meaning for our lives?

Epicureanism?

I don't want to die right now, but if that's my fate, then I'll accept it.

Although I'm not going to run out and jump in front of a bus right now, when the time comes I've accepted my fate. In my eyes life can only be fufilled by death.. in away it is our purpose to pass, decompose and give life back to that which has given us life.

Yes. I am ready to die on a daily basis...Not in a psychotic/depressed way, btw...

More like, if it happens I am prepared for what comes next...

thats exactly what we thought when we were kids when they first started doing heart transplants and stuff, like wow when you need a new heart or lungs you can just go and get a transplant and live forever.

I used to think I wanted to live forever, until I started learning about reincarnation, and karma, and whatever it is that's behind door #3. (Door #3 = whatever dimension in which God lives.)

Now, I don't think we "die". I think we still exist, but in a different state of being, and in a different dimension, or whatever it's called.

No, my mission isn't over.
But I embrace death with open arms once it comes for me.

I think that upon death we go to the "other side" where we review our life and our evolution goals and cogitize our wisdom then we either ascend into the higher densities to be one with all of creation or go back down into the physical realm for another intense material existence life experience, for which to perpetuate evolution.

That's also kind of how I feel. Not afraid, I've accomplished everything I think I wanted to accomplish (except for whatever God wants me to accomplish, of which I am as yet unaware), but I'm just now "figuring" life out, and so now I want a chance to live as if I know what I'm doing, not as if I don't know WTF I'm doing, as I have done in the past.

maybe it depends also on what one means by "death".. there is so much in this world to be thankful for, to enjoy and truly taste; for the seeker to find satisfaction in things perhaps overlooked and scoffed at in the past and view that satisfaction as a direct result of "the search".. having tasted hell ones palate is now ready for the sweet subtle hint that is Life. and knowing full well that the search is only beginning..

When my time is up, i'm sure i won't mind at all. I am not afraid to die. I just hope i get done whatever i'm meant to do first. I don't care about being remembered, but i would like to give something to this planet (and it's confused inhabitants) before i go.

And i'd very much miss you Frog, if you weren't around anymore.

I don't have important things to do in life, nor a special goal.
