Is this how you harvest cultivated Psilocybe cubensis?
    #22176755 - 09/02/15 01:26 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

This guy just plucks them off the cake, aren't you suppose to cut at the base of the stipe the with scissors as close to the substrate as possible?

Someone tell me how to harvest cultivated Psilocybin mushrooms, I know for wild Psilocybin mushrooms that you cut at the base of the stipe the with scissors as close to the substrate as possible so not disturb the mycelium, is the same true with indoor cultivated mushrooms?

Yank them off the cake. Don't cut them

Because I'm back to square one, and have gotten no where, hence, why I asked the question in the first place...

To pluck, or to cut at the base of the stipe with scissors.

I usually twist them. I don't mind damaging the casing layer. I also notice some species really like to hold onto the casing and pull up as big chunk, whereas others just let go.
I don't like growing ones that hold on. To much cleaning before drying.
I also do not like a bunch of stumps left to rot. Sometimes they go back to a ball of fuzz, sometimes they just get nasty.
As for cakes and none cased substrates, I say twist and pull.

Do some of each until you figure out which is less destructive for you and your particular mushrooms.  That's the only real answer.

Twist and pull doesn't always work and cutting isn't always necessary.  There are different answers for different occasions and you have to feel that out for yourself.

I twist and pull because the stump sometimes causes other problems or gets in the way of real estate. I only cut if it's attached to other lovelies still growing. Then once they're done, I twist the whole bunch off.

When I did PF Tek, they came off ultra easy with a slight pull. With bulk subs, you'll rip up the substrate and have to either change your technique or cut off at the base (I prefer the latter).

Also the guy in that video is a tool. I could see him picking cyans while tipping his fedora like, "M'lignin."

I usually press away from the direction they are growing and they come off without damaging the bulk sub much. But's it's really what works best for you.

Psilocybe. They grow in wood chips because they have symbiotic relationship with lignin-rich substrates.

I do a little of both, you kinda get a feel for which ones will yank up the substrate or not.

Big clusters, I always cut with a knife .

Both are acceptable methods to harvest, I think the point to take away is however you do it try to not damage the substrate too mu

Now I get it.

I would have understood your humor straight off the bat if I knew what lignin was, I had to google it just now.
Something to do with the cell walls of wood or someshit, quick wikipedia summary skim-read.

I know that Psilocybe cyanescens is a woodlover (no homo)
I pick Psilocybe subaeruginosa and subs are woodlovers (no homo)

Both species are also very closely related.

You can use either method. Twisting and pulling really starts to get old though when you're harvesting a lot of mushrooms. If you're just doing a few cakes it's probably not even worth the time it takes to find something to cut them with.

See, I thinking cutting gets old when there are a lot of mushrooms.
I didn't know that the video showed cyans. Those are a different story. Cyans are sensitive to multiple flushes. They also grab onto the wood chips with dear life. People also flick the caps to let spores loose. There is no need to do that with cubes

I twist and pull whenever I can because I don't like to leave stumps of cut mushrooms to possibly get rotten. If your going to rip half the top of your pf cake off trying to pull it then get a knife. if it's going to leave a divot in your substrate like a drunken golfer with an overly aggressive 9 iron. Then you should cut it off. it's a judgement call. that's why you get diffrent answers from diffrent people.

I've never had cut stumps go rotten on me, but I don't mist my tubs with fresh cuts exposed. I give them a few days to fuzz over. When I do a twist and pull, on occasion, and too much sub comes along with the mushroom, I feel as though the mycellial network, close by, is disrupted, slowing the growth of the neighboring fruits. Of course, as my grows are slowly transitioning from MS > Clone > Isolate, mass harvesting may change my opinion.

I have 3 harvesting knives. Super cheap dollar store serrated steak knives, heated, and bent, so that there is a 2" cutting edge, parallel to the substrait. One for cutting from the left, one for cutting from the right, and one straight knife for the occasional side pin...

The video does not show Psilocybe cyanescens and flicking the cap to let spores loose is pointless, because the mushrooms naturally drop spores...

I could the the hedge trimmers and take them all out in one pass. Do you try to cut real low ava get as much stem as possible when using  scissors? That would take to long in my book. Our do you leave a stump in there.

I just cut as low as I can at the base of a cluster most of the time.  I like to cut it so the cluster is still together, but as far down as I can get it, yeah.  If I don't give a fuck I'll twist and pull them all.

I remember talking to pasty about this and we both noticed a trend. The craters left by ripping subs rarely contaminate. The stumps seem to be trich magnets. Not sure why . Other than that there's no difference. Both stumps and trenches can develop knots and pins for subsequent flushes.

Also yeah besides contamination, stumps won't rot. Mushrooms are rot .

Yeah I did notice the stumps being kinda gross after a while.  Still better than ripping out all the pinning surface.  Call me old fashioned but I still like my second and third flushes if they're apt to grow.

Yep, I much prefer, twist and pull. Or knock them over then twist and pull.

I'd rather have a torn up substrate then stumps. Both have potential for contamination on a second flush anyway.

A stump will not contaminate any more quickly than bare colonized substrate.....a divot ripped in the substrate will......

The stump may turn greenish blue, but that does not mean its contaminated....they often turn back into mycellium and pins form on them....

Accurate. No argument.
I still don't like cutting them down with a blade though. I prefer single flush tubs if I have the spawn ready.

I've had my stumps grow mold on them but I've also had decent second flushes come in depending on the variety and spawn ratio.  It's really hard for me to justify yanking them.  I hate seeing the craters a good cluster leaves behind, and the fact that I'm probably gonna cut it anyway to get the sub off...  If anything I just advocate cutting really fucking close to the substrate.

That or my shears were contaminated. :paranoid:

What is your 2nd flush to 1st flush yield ratio?
Mine is 25% of first flush at best.

I usually get about 35-50% of my first flush on the 2nd....then I usually toss.

If they all said the same thing, there wouldn't be a point to having more than one...

I just realized we're talking about cakes here.
I definitely wouldn't leave stumps on cakes, they are so dense by harvest time that pulling fruits off won't leave a pit

Depends, with some varieties like APE I end up getting about 60-70% of the first flush amount in the second, and then another 40-50% of that in the third.  Or at least with that clone anyway..

Often enough, I don't get much at all, but typically that's because I've managed to coax the majority out in the first.

Oh and yeah, always twist and pull with cakes.

Lower spawn ratios seems to come out to more flushes, with less during the first than usual.

I remember a couple 1 or 2 years ago everyone was on the cutting bandwagon. I had several people argue with me about it. Which I don't see any problem with cutting but I'm a twist and pull kind of guy. Always will be. Nobody could accept that then. Shroomery has changed a lot since I've been away.
I wouldn't be surprised if in the future people go back to saying colonization should be done in the dark lol. I love this community though not talking shit just making an observation.

I like to use shears to harvest my tubs.  I don't use PF mix but mushrooms pluck nicely off of that comparatively.

I'm a big fan of hamloaf's method myself. It works pretty damn well. Not a big fan of cutting the fruits, no idea why

Same guy, different video.
Watch from 3:41 he thinks he can shake the shrooms off the cake then ends up ripping a chunk out of the cake out with the shrooms, leaving a crater in the cake.

Discuss.

I could the the hedge trimmers and take them all out in one pass. Do you try to cut real low ava get as much stem as possible when using  scissors? That would take to long in my book. Our do you leave a stump in there.

Just need regular old scissors. They're don't even need to be particularly sharp. What I don't like about using a knife is a lot of times you have hold the mushroom in place near the base in order to cut it without tearing the substrate out in the process. With scissors you just pressed the blades against the substrate to get a low cut so you can stack more in your other hand before they start getting in the way.

As for the stumps I've seen them turn to a sort of jelly that may have some form of rotting but it was only when they stayed wet for too long, like after a soak when when FAE was limited. I've spawned jars with in vitro pins and no top/casing layer several times and not only did the mushroom bits not rot, once the mycelium covered them they were the first places to start pinning.
