Habitat:found on a well manicured parade field. They grew solitary and not in a group

Gills: the gills look dark brown.

Cap size varies but they are all brown

I'd call them Panaeolus foenesecii

Not active

They look a bit like azzies but I can speak with 90% certainty that what you have is something else(not active). The pnw still hasn't had enough rain and drop in temp to start sprouting actives, we got 2 months to go at least.

When hunting for actives i usually pick which mushrooms "look right"(the first step) then what you wanna look for is any sort of blue bruising after you handle them, they'll bruise quick.  Lastly you wanna take a spore print, and either post it here or just research whatever mushroom you think you might have and usually you'll be able to get a good description of it's print

Good luck and happy hunting

I'll be crossing my fingers for rain

I have seen cinctulus like that with brownish gills and a black print. The spore print will tell all. Brown = Pan foenisecii, Black = Pan cinctulus.

Guess I coulda mentioned checking for a jet black print.  But those look like watery foes.  You're in the correct habitat at least.

Definately not azures

You may be right, but then again they do look pretty chunky for foenisecii. They do look exactly like ones I have found in the past: smooth slightly wavy cap, brownish gills, slightly striate around the margin. Mine had black spores and activity .

One time I thought i hit the jackpot for cinctulus, back when they were commonly known as panaelous subalteatus, picked about 300 of them in my back yard....I was yet a noob, desperate for my first active find ever....anyways I ate about 30 of them fresh, and felt nothing, knowing that pan.subbs were low on the potency scale, me and my friend downed a few more...and ended up with a belly full of foes.  haha ahhhh the good ole days :peyotespectrum:

It was one of those situations where yours eyes see brown, but your brain says, NO THATS BLACK!!!
