Ever had a Night-Shift Job?

I just this new job. Its pretty cool because i am forklift driver at a processing plant. Personaally, i love forklifting. its one of my favorite skills i have. Really enjoy it.
However, there isnt always forklifting work, so sometimes its other repetitive general labor stuff too. not so fun.
Well, im on a 12 hour shift (as its a 24 hour plant) and its a rotating shift.
I was on day shift, and this month is night shift only for me, then October is day shift.
Last night was my first 12 hour night shift and it was rugged. Its so hard to stay conscious all night long.
tonight is another night of night shift, and im still pretty worn out from last night.
Have u guys ever had night shift? Did u handle it well? Do u ever get used to it?

I used to work 2:45am-8:00am for almost 5 years. It took a few months to get used to but after that it became normal

I worked for UPS for 7 years. 3am-8am m-f. I loved it. No traffic at all to and from work. I loved going to bed at 10 am and waking up at 6 in the evening. Easy living.

I was the overnight manager for my store for the last few months before I was fired. No I never got used to that shit. I'm an insomniac even and there's just something about having to sleep all day and stay up all night all the time that just fucks everything up for me.
It also sucks cuz you can't really have a life. Practically everyone is asleep or going to bed when you're just waking up, there's really nothing (at least around here) to go do that late at night.
--------------------
With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

I worked nights at a gas station for like 3 days. I ate mushrooms every night and ate all the left over pizza and stuff. Then by the 2nd night I was done reading all the magazines and I was completely bored on the 3rd night so I quit.

My life was falling apart (outside of work.) I decided to sell all my things and drive from east coast to west. I took a brief vacation in Colorado to try their sweet mary janes. Ive applied at UPS here, so I hope I get hired.

I work in a warehouse doing bullshit boring work from 6:30pm-5am. First week was rough but I got used to it. I don't try nearly as hard or put up the numbers I used to during the day though, for whatever reasons.
Really fucks up your sleep schedule. A lot of people try to adjust for their days off and try to be up for normal people hours and sleep at night and I just can't anymore, I'm always up til 8 am now.

I worked night shift at a grocery store a while back. It sucked haha. I got used to it after a while though. I would chew gum and drink an energy drink every once and a while to keep me awake.
We also were allowed to wear headphones though so some good death metal keeps you alert as well.

Spent my first 7 years in grocery business stocking shelves at night 12am - 8am with different days off every week and never a weekend off,,,, the most miserable time of my life. No life, no friends with a nice meth habit to keep those nights going.
Best move I ever made was walking out of there, it felt like a prison.

I worked at a hotel job that had rotating shifts. It was really easy work but there was nothing to do 75% of the shift. I ended up watching all our movies for rent that sounded decent and even brought my sewing machine once and finished my kid sisters halloween costume. It was just sooooooo boring. I ended up quitting after I got a new job. But now that I'm in school I wish I had that job to do all my schoolwork.

I used to work 2pm till 10 30pm mainly, once a week it would be 10 30am till 10 30pm and 2pm till 2am . Did that for three years and got sick of it. I started to miss the smell of afternoon cut grass and BBQ's. I could get used to the hours no problem but just puts a strain on homelife.
Also worked 10 30pm till 6 am for a year somewhere else, hate sleeping during the day being woken by garbage trucks and kids screeming. Also both shifts were hell on my weekeneds, wanted to sleep in but then it's 1pm the days gone and everyone fixing to go to bed soon.
Ps. I'm solid as could be at forkstick..

My dad worked different shifts for 20 years or so at a power plant. He'd work 4 midnights,7 to 7,and get a day off then work 3 daytimes. I don't remember exactly what his schedule was like but midnight seem rough and hard to get used too. But he still works like this and on his days off he helps me and my brother doing roofing and siding. He's a freaking work machine though sometimes he would work midnights get off work then help us for 7 or 8 hours on a hot ass roof. I bet 95 percent of the population couldn't work how he works. I sure as hell couldn't. My job wears me the hell out.
Got off topic but midnights are something that suck at first but do get better. Not a whole lot better though. Some people can handle them others cant. Give er a shot and see how they treat ya.

4pm til between 4-7am. Did that for nearly 4 years. Still had things to do during the day, sleep was sporadic, mostly tried to catch up on days off..
Then had another job with two shifts during the day/morning, 5am - 9am and 5pm - 9pm. Sounds better but I think it sucked more. Still things to do during the day and hard to wind down at night. Sleep hours were between 10am - 1pm and 12am to 4am, but I mostly couldn't sleep at night.
What is there to say, it's a shit life. I haven't worked those jobs for a couple years and I thought finally I can get a better nights rest, but tbh I still have shit sleep most nights.

I unloaded the trucks at their competition that was no fun. It's got to be easier at the post office. I hate unloading trucks too. I got used to the night shift. I have a problem getting to work at 8AM, that makes me tired. I have a blanket over the window at home like dracula.

Yeah night shift jobs suck. I had the worst time trying to sleep during the day and then my patterns would get all out of wack. I lost touch with many friends because nobody normal is awake 12am to 8am lol. If its one thing that I learned with night shift, it's to never get a night shift job again.

Yup, worked 11-7 two or three nights a week at a gas station for a couple years. I fucking hated it, especially because my job would give me a couple night shifts and then a 7am-3pm shift two days later and I'd have to adjust my sleep schedule overnight, and work in going class around that chaos.

I wish i had your job in college. My dad cut me off finacially while i was in college, so i took a night shift job to work and go to school during the week. Bad idea.
I would go to work 10pm, leave at 6am and have class at 9am. Horrible. I couldnt do it. I had to drop out of college cause it was too much. No sleep sucks.
As for tonight at work, its much better. I guess forcing to sleep during the day from pure exhaustion from the night work before really resets the mind for night shift.
Then again, its noto even midnight yet. Dun dun DUN....

I worked straight nights for 2 years and now I do shift work.
You get used to the nights. Sort of. All I can suggest is to sleep regularly, stay hydrated(drink water and high vitamin C juice), eat well, and gets some caffiene and thc in your system(if you can).
And be social. The best thing to keep you awake is the friends you make.

And that first week of days after a month of nights would suck too. Their productivity must be absolutely terrible for the first week of every month. What a stupid way to run a business. They should just have full time night employees and pay them a little bit more than the day shift. Everyone is happy, everyone is more productive.

My buddy worked at a manufacturing plant here in town and they did the same thing. He worked 12 hours a day (including 2 hours of unpaid breaks which is bullshit) 4 days a week and would alternate day and night shifts every few weeks so either 7a - 7p or 7p - 7a

You mean he wasn't allowed to take his 2 hours of breaks and was just expected to keep working? Yeah that would be bullshit (actually, that would be illegal). If they were forced to take unpaid breaks, not so much. In a lot of places they're actually legally required to give you breaks, depending on how many hours you work.
If the former is true, I'd mention to your buddy that he may be able to sue the company for all that off the clock work. Can go through DoL or a lawyer who specializes in those kinda things.

i do it the ghetto waay and lay a black t-shirt over my eyes. Works pretty good.
Sometimes i wear sunglasses then put the t shirt over. Works ever better since u have to leave the bottom of the shirt, near your nose open for air.
But blackout curtains, like hotel ones, are the best.

I've worked night shift for quite a few years in the past. It's not so bad, but it is very socially limiting. I find I ended up pretty much only socializing with the people I worked with.
The switching between day and night shift seems like it would be a lot harder than just working night shift because your mind could never really adjust.
I like driving forklift too.

nah, not really. but i did work construction(pulling low voltage cable) for a couple years, and there were several worksites that we could only enter from 7PM - 5:30AM so there were a few weeks here and there when i worked 'evenings' from like 6:30 past 1am
i didnt like it very much, cause after i got home i was still all worked up, and it took like 4 more hours to wind down and fall asleep. got me all off track

Shroomslip said: You mean he wasn't allowed to take his 2 hours of breaks and was just expected to keep working? Yeah that would be bullshit (actually, that would be illegal). If they were forced to take unpaid breaks, not so much. In a lot of places they're actually legally required to give you breaks, depending on how many hours you work.
If the former is true, I'd mention to your buddy that he may be able to sue the company for all that off the clock work. Can go through DoL or a lawyer who specializes in those kinda things.
No no he still got breaks, they were just unpaid which I always thought was shit. I've worked similar jobs and I would get 30 minutes paid break.

Ah yeah it just depends on the company you work for then. Some are greedy dicks and will do anything in their power to avoid paying you extra money, some aren't.

I'm in healthcare. But it seems the same way, pretty chill at night. People are mostly sleeping.
I'm hoping it's chill enough to do homework/study or else I'll need to ask to go to part time.

they arn't gunna let u study, they will tell u to go wash a window or doornob, managers always like to make dumb shit up just to keep people busy, and if it isn't the manager it will be a coworker who goes and complains to them saying they are doing more work than u are

Haha I should say that next time. One time I was out smoking and I thought this guy walking by was one of our residents because my works kind of like on a quiet street so I asked him "who he was" and this deep voice just responds "none of your fucking business!" I was like okkkkk that's definitely not a kid

That change from dark to light again makes me feel so gross. Thankfully it can be avoided until clocking out at 6:50 or so by staying deep in the store
