I'm 5'7 and before I started working out, I was 161lbs
I now weigh 175lbs
But I went from a 36" waist Jean size to a 30", and got more defined
I've built some decent mass and I have added some big weight to all my lifts for the short time frame I believe
All those results happened in 6 to 7 months training an average of 3 days per week
My first piece of advice: throw out the fucking scale. It's garbage as far as I'm concerned
Take measurements instead and use that as a means for comparison
2. Don't listen to the tree hugging vegan nonesense in this thread. Eat meat. Try to be moderate with red meat, but enjoy your meat nonetheless
3. Find exercise you enjoy and become passionate about doing it!
4. Eat more vegetables than carbs. But don't forget that healthy carbs are essential to building muscle. And again....don't forget your protein
5. Building muscle will help you burn more fat when you are sitting and even sleeping. Weight train my friend.
6. Don't compare yourself to anyone...genetics play such a huge role and we aren't all created equal and we aren't all capable of the same body types with equal amount of effort
And as for nutritional specific advice...
Eat tons of veggies, white meat, yams, turnips, sweet potatoes.
White Rice or white potatoes within a 30 minute post workout window is the only time I try to eat carbs with a high glycemic index. Consuming these will help restore depleted glycogen levels in the muscle. Insulin helps shuttle carbs, protein and other nutrients to your muscle.
I supplement with a high quality protein powder as well. The science is changing all the time it seems on this, but in my opinion you should be at .5 grams of protein PER lbs of body weight, daily. Minimum
Sushi is one of my most favourite post workout meals lol
Eat a handful of nuts a day
Enjoy fruit and veggie smoothies

just on here trying to learn from all of you and take everything into consideration.
fuck man i figured when you said big guy i thought like 6ish and 260+
if you could possibly be a freak and go 8pack if thats your thing.
6. is the only one i disagree with masked, only because personally i see genetics as what makes the playing field uneven in so many sports and different body types do respond differently, for instance, out of all 3 od us me at 6 foot 210 and you guys around 5'7 ish. who do you really think would get a six pack the fastest from a baseline BF% of 25 percent. I know damn well I wouldn't put my money on me. Different genes hold different gifts and deficits. I gain size and strength easy, but if i want a six pack at all i have to cut my diet for that shit and when that happens it effects other shit. No bueno, meanwhile my buddy who is half my size has a diet that looks nothing like the healthy foods masked posted...
shit and beer. when he runs kids able to get 8. Genes play huuuge huuuuge huuuuuge role and may make some things way easier for you than others. find where your deficits are and work a little harder at them. Personally mine was arms, ive got some reach on me and a little harder to fill out bulk in that area, so i did my reading and started working my ass off on back and tris, tris making up 2/3's the arms and back stimulating the biceps for mostly just mass to assist in pulling.

Hmmm perhaps read again. I said genetics play a huge role so don't compare yourself to anyone
Fully agree with everything u say. We have had this talk about genetics before. They are huge. We are not all created equal

Lol tis all good
Yeah genes are huge. I compare myself to people when I shouldnt. Not all men are created equal.
I still think 'nearly' every goal is achievable, but for some it may take 1000x the effort for said goal compared to some others who barely need any effort to reach the same goal

There's always more than one way to look at an issue. We can read endless sources that conform to what we like to believe--whether it's pro meat, pro environmentalism, pro christianity, pro american--whatever. What matters is experience, and even then, if experience with or without meat feels beneficial people will have counter-arguments to your chosen lifestyle.
My lifestyle with no meat has proven to be beneficial in physical, nutritional, and spiritual ways. Just offering advice that I feel is important and extremely helpful for physical and mental well-being. But the changes take an overhaul in the way you think, and take a certain amount of homework, knowledge and self-control.

Ok, fair enough. Let me delve into your thought process a little more if you don't mind?
Do you feel that a person who has had the self control and knowledge to stick to a strict healthy balanced diet involving animal protein, and who has walked away better for it(physically, mentally, spiritually), is as successful and/or enlightened as you?
Like in said hypothetical situation, would you feel that their way is wrong and yours is right?
Or do you see both as a success? Both human beings, bettering their life through different ways of different healthy choices?
While I don't agree with abstaining from meat, I see your results as a victory(same as mine)
And if so, I to your successes!

In no way am I enlightened, or completely successful. But yes, of course. If you've bettered your life, gotten out of a state of mind, or a state of decay or unhealthiness, overweight, depression, whatever, than by all means--huge victory! I don't see eating meat as evil, it's all around us. It tastes good. Many people need it. Many people would die without it. But for me, someone who lives in a world of abundance, information, and options, I've learned I do not need meat and can receive the same, if not more nutrition, living on a diet that eliminates all meat.
The whole animal thing, for me, is much larger than strictly nutritional though. For me, it's moral, ethical, the treatment of other earthlings in a compassionate way. The health of earth, etc.--you know the deal. I feel that spirituality is founded on compassion and realizing the suffering in others, and I realized about three months ago that forgoing meat was a necessary step to my spiritual well-being.
There is responsible meat eating, and that's what I felt I did for about a year before I quit altogether.
I did the whole gym thing--the weights, the protein, the high meat intake, and yes, I was healthy and felt good and enjoyed how I looked. But I realized it's not necessarily 'natural' to sustain a body in that way, that, for me (maybe many) it was a vain attempt to look a certain way.
But we now live in a time, where eating meat is unnecessary. We, in the 'developed world' have countless options and alternatives and loads of information, that if given the time to delve into, can help us contribute to a more sustainable world.
There is responsible meat eating, and irresponsible. Same goes for vegetarians, vegans, all people and all lifestyles, all labels...

It seems you've missed my whole point
I live just as, even possible more than, a healthy lifestyle as you do. My "success" equals or exceeds your own
And I do it eating meat
So does this make my path as equally as positive as your own in your opinion? If you answer yes to that question, I will say "ditto" to your successes and it comes down to a each to their own type thing
But If you form another response in a fashion as to imply your path is better and healthier, then it shows your bias and ignorance on health and I will group you in with the rest of the vegan slime balls with an agenda and piss poor judgement on proper nutrition

Well yes, in the first sentence to my response I affirmed your question. I didn't intend to come into this thread to start preaching, if it seems so, I apologize to the OP.
It's just like the numerous paths to god or knowledge or whatever:
