Steaming the jars
    #2217297 - 01/03/04 09:23 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hi there,

A grasshopper asked me a question that I figured I'd forward to all you knowledgeable fungi folks. The grasshopper has no pressure cooker so he decided to steam his jars. He read the extensive information available on this site, but he's still a little hazy on a certain topic.
The grasshopper was wondering how to steam the jars without getting water inside. He read that breathable tape like surgical would help, but was optional nonetheless. He then read about putting aluminum foil over the tops of the jars while steaming them. But if he put aluminum foil sealed over the top of the jars, wouldn't this cover up the holes on top of his jars and not allow any of the substrate mixture to be steamed and sterilized?
The grasshopper would also like to know if any of you had put a washcloth or 2 down on the bottom layer of the pot to rest the jars on, and if anyone had success with that.
Thanks in advance
a greasy wop

Put a washcloth on the bottom is fine. Or buy a heat pad thing that fits in there. Just losen the lids and cut a square peice of foil and wrap it around the top and fold the edges up.

Thats it.

concerning the washcloth:yeah, personaly sometimes I still use some tissue under the jars, no prob

and rest:the alum foil doesn't stop the air circulation between the jar inside and outside.

My freind uses a towel under his when he steams becaues he heard that they'll crack/break less if you do. And he just wraps the tops up in foil, hasnt had a problem yet.

Be very careful with the cloth at the bottom of a pot/pc. If you let the water level get too low it will burn. My friend just got a little metal rack and some sheet metal and made a tiny little stand for the jars and it seems to work really well.

My cricket says that the foil isn't heat sealed to the jar or anything and that the steam will still get into the substrate. My cricket also said that people have been doing this for years and surely if the foil didn't work, crickets wouldn't use it. My cricket also says that I say cricket too much and it gets a little annoying. :smirk:

get 3 tshirts you dont use (even screenprinted are okay)
each should makes at least two circles traced by the lid of your steaming pot
these layered are good for keeping the bottom of the 1/2*pint jars warm but up off.
reusable circles go on hangers or showerrods to dry and do so neatly and cleanly
can be used as a coffeefilter in a pinch if you're ever homeless
good for lining incubator tubs when dry
and the bubbles from steaming those four 1/2*pints in there
will float up around the outsides of the cloth circles to the top leaving the jars relatively sploshfree so you can even still use coffee filters if that's your style (tyvek (foil optional) recommended)
