funny how most people whom are hiring people do not realize they're hiring liars. so what's the fucking point of screening people through in this manner, if people just fuckin' lie anyway about their references. i'll tell you why...because people are stupid.

anyone who accepts this practice is...being idiotic.[/quote]

They're not just hiring any liars though. They're hiring confident liars who've sold them the lies in such a way that would have them believe the job would be easily done by this person.

that's terrible screening. i don't mind the lying...in fact i understand the lying (and your point, oh with that confidence why couldn't this person work for us? which is exactly my point...) you shouldn't need to lie about this BULLSHIT. you should just be able to prove you can do the job, and then if you can, well enough then you're hired.

Seriously, try a temp agency.

They will start you off with low hours at a place that isn't important to them.  That's them gauging your reliability and workmanship.  After that, you'll go up to their bigger contracts that pay a little more and have more hours.  The bigger contracts often hire permanently through the temp agencies.

I only had 2 jobs before I started temping; one for a summer after grade 9 doing the lawn and gardening at my school, and one weekend midnights job at a 24hr restaurant.  I started temping after I quit the restaurant gig and did a bunch of cool things and now I know the inner workings of wineries of all kinds, greenhouses, all kinds of places.  Hell I can't even remember half of them anymore or what they made there.

Temping was also good for me to hone my social skills, which were lacking at the time, in a low stress environment.  I've never seen a single one of the people I've temped with again in my life.  Or if I have I've forgotten who they were entirely, just as they have me.

:whathesaid:

Thanks to temping I have a "really nice job" in corporate america that most people would kill for with little/intermittent previous work experience.
I personally hate corporate america and all day every day office work but  they are paying me pretty good.

But is it hard to get work flipping burgers or whatever? How much lying is needed for working work?

I would reckon for positions that require less know-how, you wouldn't need to lather on the lies so much or they wouldn't be grilling you about your past fast food experiences.

My wife has two bachelors. I helped her get into teaching, worked for us both for the first few years and she's been taking care of me for all the rest of this time. We're both from messed up families and she knows a lot about my 'issues' like alcoholism and bipolar/depression and stuff. The main plan is to move out-of-state, then start going to school, when I know I can go back-to-back and not forget the math like I always do between odd semesters here and there. Anyways, thank the gods for my patient wife! She's one of a kind. :heartpump:

It seems that you make a bunch of excuses so you can keep being lazy. Based on my past experiences with people your wife is probably going to leave you soon if you don't provide anything. Or what if she dies. Then you'll be 40 and working entry level jobs.
Enroll in college today or tomorrow then spend the rest of your time putting in applications. Put in applications for every entry level job you can until you get hired. When you get hired work your ass off even if its just taco bell, that way you'll get a good reference for your next job. If you get hired at a dead end place with no chance for promotion,  or a place that doesn't teach you a valuable skill, then put in more applications until you find a place worth working for.
I'm not sure how to explain the 10 year gap in unemployment. Maybe you could tell them you were a stay at home dad for your girls kid. Or you had a big inheritance that kept you alive, or maybe that you traded stocks.
Quit the drinking too. Or practice self control and save it for your days off. No one wants to hire an acoholic

yeah, no, shit no of course not.

not for something like that.

it's the principal damn it.

i wouldn't lie to get a fast food job. i have no references either, and what i'd do is explain to them my vast need for the job and identify with the interviewer, tell my story.

 if that doesn't eventually work, and i don't start getting call-backs then those places are probably really really shitty places to work.

there's a reason there are even any benefits to recruitment...because it's absolutely horrid to train for that.

Yeah I think a good first step is to just start filling out applications everywhere even Mcdonalds, because your really in a tough position as far as job politics go to be picky. Its definitely a good idea to start getting used to the process, filling apps, writing resume's, making calls and cover letters. You may be fortunate and find something decent with little trouble, but most likely though unless you take any opportunity you can get, you're going to be jumping through allot of hoops only to get nowhere.

Yeah and most temp agencies hire for both office and labour work.  Sammich could try out both and see what he likes better.  Then if he wants to further himself in the future, he'll know whether it will be towards either an office or factory/trades environment.

The first step is just getting a job though, and if you live in a decent sized city, and especially if you have your own transportation, temping means fast food doesn't even have to be an option.

I think you're spot on. For shit jobs, you can lie your way in. For more advanced jobs, applicants are screened.

Learn a valuable skill online for free as fast as you can, then take that knowledge and a) start your own business or b) get hired

The only skill that comes to mind where the above is possible is computer programming.

There are opencourses online with lectures from MIT, Harvard, Princeton.

I believe MIT offers online classes complete with video lectures, community graded assignments and tests, forums..all for free.

With enough motivation/time you could become a fairly decent programmer within 6 months time..write an app or get a job to get $$

Not for long! Still, might be good for a quick paycheck though.

I dont mind working retail, or hell even food service, but the places that would attract me
( grungy dives and record / book stores ) usually have a line of hipsters competing for those jobs.

Maybe I'll start collecting cans by the side of the road?

What an idiot. Why would you bust your ass at McDonalds to save up money for college and then get a degree in criminology? She better be going to law school.

Sammich, I've been waiting tables all throughout college and while it does suck, its good money and cash in your pocket every night if you can manage to land somewhere nice.
