I haven't worked in ten years, and have no references, what should I do?

Feels shitty, man.
I want to get back in the swing of things now that I've stabilized and got a decent sleep schedule going...but who's gonna hire a motherfucker like me? McDonald's dont fit. They work you like a dog plus they talk too much shit. Without those dollar signs. It's like living and dying at the same time.
Anyone else had this happen? Like 10 years just slides on by and then you need to get a job and the only places hiring are shithole disposable jobs like retail and fast food.
Any advice for conning these people into hiring me? Thanks.

If you have good references, the unemployed time gap shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Volunteer or straight up lie on your resume. Get a couple of friends or your mom and dad to help you and pretend to be your old bosses when they call for references.
Either that or just be honest about whatever your situation was. I'd just lie though. 10 years is a long time with no job and you aren't going to seem worth betting on for most employers.
You should try a temp agency. A lot of the time, after getting sent to a few places, one of them will pick you up and hire you on as an employee. That's how I've gotten a couple of decent jobs in my life.

How old are you? Construction might be the way to go if you are under thirty or so.

How do you get by ten years without working? Id go insane from all the boredom and no moneys...
My only advice to you would be make friends with somebody who owns a small business that does private contracting. Like roofing, other carpentry, or landscaping. And you could fill in the gaps saying you worked under the table doing one of those three and put your friend as a reference. All he has to do is answer when they call and say ya he worked for me landscaping hes great at cutting grass.

I was thinking about volunteering, but even some of those need references. Sucks being 30+ years old and possibly working at the same place you did as a teen.

Do you have a college degree?
Do you have any skills?
What have you done for the last 10 years?
You sound like you have nothing going for you and yet feel like you are above fast food/retail jobs. Maybe you should start mopping floors and maybe some day you'll get promoted to fries.

Look soups its not that bad man its jus gonna take a little pokin around but i bet theres a place out there for you. you seem like u have a good head on ur shoulders. jus start putting feelers off in all directions. I disagree with going to fast food type jobs unless its an absolute last resort. They dont pay a livable wage and most people end up working close to 60hrs a week at like 3 diff places just to get by and at that point they become trapped hell if your car breaks or anything you end up plaing catch up thats when basically your life is ruined. Youll wake up 55 a manager at mcdonalds nothing to show for your life nothing to retire on a shlub with no free time and not a dollar in your pocket.

I mean, I need some extra cash, but would also like a job that I can use as a legit reference in the future. Taco Bell or some shit aint gonna cut it.
I think I'm going to pick up a few applications just to get used to filling them out and getting my story straight. Might even work at Subway or whatever (if they'll have me) just to get used to it again.
The hard part is going to be finding adequate people to make stuff up about my previous experience. I dont think they can ask really personal questions (when calling your references) but most of my friends frown on lying in general, so...
Wish me luck!

Part of having a job is an employee and employer relationship. You don't want to start that off with a lie. Would you want your employer feeding you bullshit? Just say that you have had personal issues going on in your life. They cannot probe about what that entails. Show them you are ready to work and you'll land a job in no time. Best of luck!

Seriously, try a temp agency.
They will start you off with low hours at a place that isn't important to them. That's them gauging your reliability and workmanship. After that, you'll go up to their bigger contracts that pay a little more and have more hours. The bigger contracts often hire permanently through the temp agencies.
I only had 2 jobs before I started temping; one for a summer after grade 9 doing the lawn and gardening at my school, and one weekend midnights job at a 24hr restaurant. I started temping after I quit the restaurant gig and did a bunch of cool things and now I know the inner workings of wineries of all kinds, greenhouses, all kinds of places. Hell I can't even remember half of them anymore or what they made there.
Temping was also good for me to hone my social skills, which were lacking at the time, in a low stress environment. I've never seen a single one of the people I've temped with again in my life. Or if I have I've forgotten who they were entirely, just as they have me.

You need to just be active online on all the relevant job portals applying for positions that you could see yourself doing.
Write a cover letter that makes you fit the bill.
At least get used to applying and interviews.

Daily Labor is easy to get into but god damn it's hard work. May come down to that if nothing else shakes out though. Think I'd prefer the corner gas station or dishwasher somewhere...
Looking into volunteering. Was going to wait until I started school again (community college) as then it kind of makes sense why I dont have references, and shows that I'm smart and 'going places'...but I need some scratch to make ends meet.

in your area look for free job training.. there are plenty of them here in the burgh /medical coding, lab worker, chef, metal shops .. my gf never worked a day in her life , at 35 she got sucked up by the mental health system, trained her. she now works in the biggest hospital system here, making good money.
