Man, that is beautiful! Well done, bro!

I need to get started on mine! Have any of the Coastal Redwoods started growing?

No luck yet with the coastal redwood seeds but they've only been in the fridge two weeks

Its not only cold stratification (from snow) that starts the seeds. Flaming the dirt to aerate everything (or using some verm in the mix) along with a lot of compost tea and a shallow burial should get them to start. There are also certain mychorrizal fungi and enzymes that are important to their health that directly relate to wild fires, thats why they are damn near impossible to clone

Quote:

As a first and important role, fire in the sequoia-mixed conifer forest provides soft, friable soil on which the lightweight sequoia seeds fall and in which they are buried (Hartesveldt and Harvey, 1967). By consuming the accumulation of down branches, litter, and duff, fire allows the seed to reach mineral soil. And in heating the soil, fire changes the texture in a way which allows a seed to be covered by a few millimeters of soil as a result of its fall from the tree, thus promoting germination.

Timing of the burn is important. In the Redwood Mountain Sequoia Grove in Kings Canyon National Park, one experimental burn took place in August, 1969. This allowed two months of seed fall before winter snows came. On plot 3, which burned hottest, more than 40,000 sequoia seedlings per acre were found during the first year after burning, while about 13,000 per acre germinated on lighter burned plots 1 and 2. The three burn plots averaged nearly 22,000 sequoia seedlings per acre the first year after burning. Not a single sequoia seedling was found on the unburned control plot.

That link inspired me to do a batch in a soil/conifer ash mix
Here's the beast now

Conifer ash should really help, theres so much ash up in the hills with the frequent fires :bigblunt:

Look at all the "fire-followers" that sprout up a few weeks to months after a good burn.

A lot of the giant sequoias dont even burn down in a fire so Im sure they have adapted to include it in their development. :goodluck:

I remember reading, when I was a kid, that wildfires trigger redwood germination. I think it's a genetic adaptation that is beneficial for their survival, because it clears all of the surrounding plant competition, and fertilizes the soil. Something like that, I believe.

Yeah its looking great, when are you considering transplanting? Trees love huge containers but i would be afraid to stress it when its young.

When you do transplant, give it a deep and wide container..let it stretch those roots.
