Hello from Alaska
    #22172309 - 09/01/15 02:01 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I just wanted to quickly say hello to everyone. I've used this site as a resource for years, but I've never actually had a reason to post. I have recently moved to a remote village in Alaska and I've begun collecting pictures like crazy. I've noticed surprisingly few people posting from AK and I'd love to get as many pix out as I can before we freeze. This place is crawling with a remarkable number of mushrooms. I've been here less than a month and I'm overwhelmed by the diversity.

I'm certainly no expert, so I don't even know what most of these are. I'm just a huge fan of the mushroom's beauty and I have a tremendous respect for the healing powers they possess. Some of these things might even turn out to be free chow! At any rate I the hope the community will have some interest. Thanks!

By the way you should add all the pictures to one post, otherwise it gets very confusing when several people post. It helps to number them as well, that way people don't have to quote the pictures or try to describe which ones they mean.

I'm sorry, I'm dealing with a seriously poor connection and I got frustrated.

Lacrymaria lacrymabunda

Welcome, I love Alaska, don't think I would want to live there again, but it was fun when I did many years ago.

You will get better results if you make a proper ID request, and add a small description of each specimen you find.  Also include proper pics showing all parts of the mushroom, this will help the lovely trusted identifiers nail down what genus/species your specimens are from

With that said, welcome friend.

Stay Shroomy Brother.

Thanks so much for the advice. I will certainly mind the particulars with more care next spring. I was basically just shocked by the population and diversity here. I had to get some pictures on the web while they're still around.

Thanks! I have the National Audubon Society field guide, but I haven't been able to find much in it. I'd love to start chowing down on some of these things next spring, but they are just too difficult for m to identify.

It does take time. But at some point it will all start making sense quite fast i think. Or that's how it was for me anyway. The key is familiarity.

I'm sure that's very true, but without an expert around out here, I'd be nuts to start scarfing no matter how sure I think I am. I'm pretty sure I know of a puff ball here I can eat. A native even told me they were cool to eat, but I'm a bit freaked. I'm just going to keep at I ad I'm sure I'll learn enough to start eating a few.

Well look at it this way; you have the rest of your life to ID things correctly, but you only have to get it wrong once.

Very well said! It's funny, some mushrooms taste amazing, some can smear your reality across the universe, and others will kill you dead. What a funny thing they are.
