Best gaming laptop out right now?
    #22172165 - 09/01/15 12:38 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Trying not to have to spend more than around 1000 dollars but I want MAXIMUM speed , graphics, and performance .. Willing to save up longer and spend more if needed for the BEST laptop out there.

Will be used mostly for gaming , photo / video editing .

Possibly music making if I ever find time to understand FL studio, but that's not my main priority for upgrading.

I have had an ASUS pc that ran me about a thousand bucks for many years now, it's just getting old and slow and I need something I can use and be mobile with.

Looking for all recommendations not just the BEST one, but I am curious to which laptop is superior right now.

Thanks in advance for any information provided to me!

:peace:

P.S. Please be as detailed in your reasoning for your choices and recommendations to help me understand better. Thanks again.

A thousand for an Asus that runs slow???

I built a PC with a Intel 4790k for around 800.. Runs games better than an Xbox 1 or PS4. Consoles are a joke compared to my setup.

I highly recommend not getting a laptop, unless your main desire is portability.
You can spend two grand on an Alienware and I guarantee my PC would still blow it out of the water.

I'v owned it for about 4 years now. It used to run VERY fast , now its runs smoothly but just not PERFECT like it used too. I feel it's time for an upgrade.. Or should I just spend a little money and customize my computer more?

My Core i7 runs at 4.0 Ghz. My PC was built at the beginning of the year.

There could be several things slowing your computer down, such as viruses or not having enough memory (ROM not RAM).
I'm really not an expert at these things..

You did not say you want it to be portable...
If that isn't your main motivation I would suggest you either upgrade, or build a new PC. Black Friday is approaching, prices drop like mad. I bought my processor for $280 9 months ago and they are still selling for around $330.
I probably saved about 10-30% on my build by buying everything during Black Friday week.

When buying a laptop, you lose the ability to upgrade things like graphics cards and other components.
You are really paying extra just for the luxury of being able to take it with you (and to have that screen on there).
So if saving money is your main interest, and you don't care to take it everywhere you go, don't bother with a laptop.

The only reason I would buy a gaming laptop is if I had to go on long boring flights. For any simple work, a tablet would suffice.
I am a college student (engineer, I'm on a computer at least 4-6 hours everyday) without a laptop, and I do all my work on my PC at home or I go to labs and use the school's PCs.
I have found that I have zero need for a laptop in my life, and prefer to know exactly what is in my computer, from the hardware to every bit of software.

I used to have a nice gaming laptop (from 5 years ago) that could run most games (Skyrim even, but really shitty.) For some reason it likes to rape hard drives, and after destroying 2, I decided it wasn't worth risking money on replacing it again, and it just sits somewhere in my apartment collecting dust now.

Thank you for the input!

Mobility is a big aspect in my decision but I am the kind of person who likes to fully customize their products.. I think I need to find a more stable work environment so i'm not working wanting to do my days work at the local coffee shop or library , etc..

Still interested to hear about good laptops are the market tho! Just out of curiosity !

Best gaming laptops and $1000 do not mix.
You generally need to spend around 1500-2k+ for a top of the line legit "gaming" laptop.
Others can "get by" for less, but for $1000 you'd be far better off dumping it into a custom desktop.
But you aren't going to get the fastest, maximum graphics and performance on a laptop for only 1k, you'll need to dish out a little more.

So should I just dump some money into upgrading my PC right now at home until I can afford a proper gaming laptop (I DO want one eventually) or if my pc is old will that effect performance and should I just start over with a new pc? I posted my specs in this thread if you want to take a look.

You probably don't need to build a whole new PC.
If you are happy with your processor (an i7 is great, even if its 3rd or 4th gen still) then don't bother upgrading that.
You have enough RAM also (unless you play games like Rome:Total War (the new ones of course) and like to have massive battles.)

What graphics card are you running?
This is the upgrade that will most likely boost performance, I doubt you will experience bottle-necking with an i7.

Your computer may be running slow for several reasons (as I said before, I'm not that good at figure out why)
I'd recommend getting an external hard drive and backing up your files, then reformatting windows once you have a new graphics card.

Now, when it comes to laptops, this laptop http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152809
would definitely play any game currently on the market.
The graphics card in that is just barely one level above what I have in my PC but it costs 3.5 times my build.

When looking at graphics cards in laptops, notice the m. As in, GTX 970m. Basically that 'm' means subtract 100 from the serial of the graphics card to have the desktop equivalent.
So that 970m is equivalent to a 870 that you would put into a PC.

I have a NVIDIA GTX 760 in my $800 build. That's why I said its barely one level up.
A GTX 980 for a PC costs $500... Mine cost $200 only.
If I were to upgrade my PC, I wouldn't replace my graphics, but rather just buy another GTX 760.

Holy shit those are expensive... I was always wanting a gaming lap top but I can't shell out that kind of coin.  Now I am thinking of taking my old alien ware and buying new all new hardware cause it blows now, I wonder how much that would cost.

What do you mean taking your old alienware?
You mean taking it and selling it?

You can't upgrade components in a laptop.

Well if it's that old, you likely need a new processor & video card.
But you can still use the case, power supply, disk drives and hard drives. The motherboard should be ok too.
You can definitely save some money by using that.

Oh yeah, the video card and processor are junk now.  Hopefully you're right about the other things cause I need a computer but not trying to dump money into it.

here is my case if that gives you an idea as to how old it is.

Yeah its a really cool case.  Its huge though, like the biggest PC case I've ever seen in person.

Thats why I'd like to just put new parts though since I got a decent case already.

Yea but you can only have 1 processor, and an upgrade would make a big difference.

You could just add another video card though, sure.

You gotta be careful with alienwares... especially if it's after the time Dell took them over.
My friend tried upgrading his and we discovered it had all sort of stupid shit and proprietary connections, like the PSU to motherboard connection had some weird proprietary dell bullshit. I told him to just say fuck it and build a new one, it wasn't worth the trouble. He wanted to upgrade the CPU, we would have had to replace the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and PSU just to get to that point.. and then the form factor of the case was weird and we weren't even sure if a standard ATX would fit.

Now depending on that Alienware model (would need the model).. you may be able to upgrade it.. but you can't always just throw a modern video card into an older system and expect it to be awesome.
1. You have to worry about clearance issues - will it fit?

2. You have to worry about bottlenecking issues. What processor is in the system? If it's like a Intel duo core or equivalent - upgrading the GPU may be a waste of your time. You'd probably want to upgrade the motherboard/CPU combo first.. so you don't bottleneck to shit with a modern GPU. I've seen people put like 580s and shit into old ass PCs with old CPUs and they bottleneck and stutter to hell. Any higher end GPU and much older architecture (read: under i5 level) CPUs will have similar issues.

3, As mentioned before, Dell era Alienwares I discovered, have a lot of proprietary bullshit. So you may find it's not just a simple road of "swap this out" or "upgrade this". In my friend's case, he would have had to buy a new PSU as well in order to replaced the mobo and CPU.

4. You also have to make sure the PSU in the system can support the video card (has enough free 6/8pin PCIe power connectors) and has enough amperage on the +12v rail to meet the minimum requirements.

So yeah.. you could maybe upgrade that alienware. But depending on a bunch of different variables.. it may be better to just build something else.
Alienware USED to be a company that just made really good gaming systems from high end parts.
Then Dell bought them out and their quality went downhill and they started adding proprietary connections and stupid bullshit like that.

Date Ordered: 4/29/2009

Found that in my old email.  Im not sure if that makes a difference.  On wiki it says they started the purchasing process in 2006 but "On June 2, 2009, The M17x was introduced as the First Alienware/Dell branded system"

If its a total pain in the ass I'll probably skip it.  Then again, I've never built a PC nor have ANY knowledge of hardware or what any of it is or called so its gonna be a pain for me either way.

So start doing research. I was in the same position as you when I built my PC.

Thanks for that link.  Research can be my best friend sometimes, just don't always know where to start.

What do you guys think a good quality gaming comp vs top quality gaming comp costs from scratch?  I wouldn't have to have top quality but if I could afford it then why not.  If its expensive for even just a decent one, then I'll be putting this off till later in the year most likely or early next year.

OP - I'm sorry for derailing your thread, hopefully this is all good information for you to use also

I built mine for under $900 and it runs every game I have at maximum graphics settings with no lag. FPS isn't through the roof though.

Top end graphics cards cost like $1000. Totally unnecessary and you can double them up even.
You can spend like $5000 building a PC if you just want to burn money, but what's the point?

I see.

I definitely don't have that kind of dough laying around.  Best I got is maybe $600~?  Im trying to get into a new place and will be taking on new expenses so the extra money just isnt there.  But I want a gaming comp, even if I'm not gaming they're just fast as hell and the way to go IMO.

For around $1000 you can build a custom, very respectable gaming PC that will handle most games out there just fine.
If you want to go for something more "top of the line" and bleeding edge with some of the best components.. you're looking at closer to 2-3k.
You CAN build a basic gaming PC for around 500-600.. but you are going to be skimping on parts. Either way, it will still blow away any laptop of a similar price or a $500 console for that matter.
I'd sooner shoot for around the 1k mark.. if you want to go with Intel/Nvidia :yesnod: .. and you definitely want an SSD.

Yeah I'll have to save for quite some time to have actual extra money to build if I went for $1K.

The link Green Rabbit provided is full of information.. It lead me to a page called PcPartPicker which then lead me to this

http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/DFPxFT/fx-6300-gtx-960-gaming-pc

and from there amazon had a page already built for every part that PC would need for that build

http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=11437317011&tag=featuredguide-20

That build is $650.  Any good or just basic?

I was looking at the build the other day. Its not so bad. AMD processors are not the POS they used to be, and have grown quite well.
I would make it 16gb ram, add another ssd so you can raid them, and upgrade that 1tb hard drive to a 4tb one.

I have only a basic understanding of what SSD is?  I know its similar to a HDD and used to be that only Laptops had SSD's?

SSD is a solid state drive, they are unlike mechanical hard drives, in that there are no moving parts or spinning discs.
They are extremely fast, roughly 3-100x faster than most mechanical hard drives on average. Due to no moving parts they also have a much longer lifespan and take up much less space.
Basically once you go SSD on your boot drive, you'll never be able to use a regular HDD again as your primary, it will be too painful and slow compared to the SSD. Mechanicals are good for backing up data now
Any good computer especially gaming computers have an SSD these days. If the rest of your components kicks ass but you are only using a standard mechanical drive, that would become your bottleneck.

The easy simple way to think of SSD is to just think about someone taking a bunch of memory/RAM chips and building them into an actual storage device instead of just temporary storage.  A hard drive with no mechanical moving parts.  No platter, no read/write head.  Its basically just memory in a configuration where it can actually hold data even through power loss.

SUPER SUPER fast.  For the majority of the time PC's have been end use affordable, the mechanical hard drive was THE limiting factor in overall speed.  The slowest part of a computer with exception to the floppy or CD/DVD drives.  Even super slow old ram can read/write data exponentially faster then a mechanical hard drive with today's technology can.

Right.. it is essentially RAM on steroids.
Hence the idea of the old school RAMDisks.. which now with SSDs are kinda irrelevant.
Boot times and programs initializing and read/write speeds is where you see the night and day difference.
I was completely blown away when I first installed Windows to an SSD and it booted up into Windows in like, 7 seconds from a cold boot. Photoshop loads up instantly as fast as the intro screen loads..
SSDs are the best. And just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. You can get a 1TB SSD for ~300 now. That's like what a 80GB SSD cost just a few years ago.

I can't wait until we get to the point where mechanical drives just are not even made anymore and everything is some variation of SSD or newer tech.  They are such a substantial leap over the old mechanical method and we are getting close to a point with silicone and processors in general where we either need to come up with a completely new type, or we will start hitting the ceiling for a bit.  Sort of like the ceiling that mechanical drives had and were for so long in computers.

One hurdle down, 1390821590423 more to go!

You generally need to spend around 1500-2k+ for a top of the line legit "gaming" laptop.
Others can "get by" for less, but for $1000 you'd be far better off dumping it into a custom desktop.
But you aren't going to get the fastest, maximum graphics and performance on a laptop for only 1k, you'll need to dish out a little more.

couple examples of beastmode laptops

Unless you absolutely need the portability.. it's better to dump that money into a nice custom desktop first

Ridiculous really

You pay 800€ here for a comp with 3.5ghz

2800 bucks for 2.6ghz sounds like a ripoff.

i'm so making a monsterrig for 1k lol

If you buy those parts custom

the hell you paying for for those laptops? 1-1.5k for assembly?

Uugggh you guys are making me want to start my build so bad.  My internet speed is 1.5mbps at my house so building a sweet rig would be kind of pointless until i move in like 4-6 months.

7 second boot time :homerdrool:

im used to like 3~ minutes

CPU clock speed is not everything.. also those are 2.6GHz base clock and boost up to 3.5-3.6GHz btw

Most of the price of those is from the GPUs in them.. +SSDs +memory.. .
One has a 980m, 24GB DDR3 and a 256GB SSD. one has 2x970ms in SLI.. saw another one with 2x TitanMs and a 1TB SSD..
They are gaming GPUs for a reason, they have beastly GPUs in them + a lot of memory and SSDs and usually better screens.

GPU's are actually more powerful then CPU's in a lot of aspects now a days.  Thats part of the reason why they are so damn expensive.  2 titans in a laptop. Jeeeebus.

Totally incorrect.
Both have different functions.
You cant compare the two.

No.. he's right to an extent.
Yes both CPUs and GPUs are vitally important to the overall performance, they both serve their respective roles.
Older generation games were mostly CPU bound, in that CPU determined the game performance for the most part.
New generation games are much more reliant on GPUs, being that if you have a CPU that is 'good enough' for the game, your game performance will mostly depend on your GPUs.
Modern Nvidia GPUs are pretty insane with like 4+ million transistors pushing out 4k+ GFLOPS. Modern GPU technology has grown in leaps and bounds which is why they are necessary for high end applications like insane data crunching/bitcoin mining, AUTOCAD, scientific applications, Video editing and more. CPUs serve the basic math functions, GPUs do the hardcore benching.

No he isnt.
Just cause you can tag "processor" onto the end does not make them the same.
The architectures are completely different.
Just because a program adapt coding to crunch numbers w/ the gpu does not make them the same.

Its like comparing an ARM to an x86/64

Folding used to be done on CPUs back in the day
Now GPUs are more powerful for that .

Same thing with bitcoin mining.
That's the kind of stuff he was referring to.

You can definitely compare the two.. they both serve integral functions.
Some things that the CPU used to do, GPUs are better suited for now.

But neither can work without the other...?
If they are theoretically the same, you would only need 1, cause they should be the same and be able to handle the same processes.
Like i should be able to boot my pc without a cpu and only my 970.
I cant because they have different architecture, making them totally different.
Even motherboards that have video out have "integrated" gpu's.

Each one serves functions vastly different from one another.

You cant use a bitcoin miner as your base.
It is just code that interfaces with your gpu's codebase to use its DIFFERENT processor to crunch coins faster
