You gotta be careful with alienwares... especially if it's after the time Dell took them over. My friend tried upgrading his and we discovered it had all sort of stupid shit and proprietary connections, like the PSU to motherboard connection had some weird proprietary dell bullshit. I told him to just say fuck it and build a new one, it wasn't worth the trouble. He wanted to upgrade the CPU, we would have had to replace the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and PSU just to get to that point.. and then the form factor of the case was weird and we weren't even sure if a standard ATX would fit.
Now depending on that Alienware model (would need the model).. you may be able to upgrade it.. but you can't always just throw a modern video card into an older system and expect it to be awesome. 1. You have to worry about clearance issues - will it fit?
2. You have to worry about bottlenecking issues. What processor is in the system? If it's like a Intel duo core or equivalent - upgrading the GPU may be a waste of your time. You'd probably want to upgrade the motherboard/CPU combo first.. so you don't bottleneck to shit with a modern GPU. I've seen people put like 580s and shit into old ass PCs with old CPUs and they bottleneck and stutter to hell. Any higher end GPU and much older architecture (read: under i5 level) CPUs will have similar issues.
3, As mentioned before, Dell era Alienwares I discovered, have a lot of proprietary bullshit. So you may find it's not just a simple road of "swap this out" or "upgrade this". In my friend's case, he would have had to buy a new PSU as well in order to replaced the mobo and CPU.
4. You also have to make sure the PSU in the system can support the video card (has enough free 6/8pin PCIe power connectors) and has enough amperage on the +12v rail to meet the minimum requirements.
So yeah.. you could maybe upgrade that alienware. But depending on a bunch of different variables.. it may be better to just build something else. Alienware USED to be a company that just made really good gaming systems from high end parts. Then Dell bought them out and their quality went downhill and they started adding proprietary connections and stupid bullshit like that.

Date Ordered: 4/29/2009
Found that in my old email. Im not sure if that makes a difference. On wiki it says they started the purchasing process in 2006 but "On June 2, 2009, The M17x was introduced as the First Alienware/Dell branded system"
If its a total pain in the ass I'll probably skip it. Then again, I've never built a PC nor have ANY knowledge of hardware or what any of it is or called so its gonna be a pain for me either way.

So start doing research. I was in the same position as you when I built my PC. http://lifehacker.com/5828747/how-to-build-a-computer-from-scratch-the-complete-guide

Thanks for that link. Research can be my best friend sometimes, just don't always know where to start.
What do you guys think a good quality gaming comp vs top quality gaming comp costs from scratch? I wouldn't have to have top quality but if I could afford it then why not. If its expensive for even just a decent one, then I'll be putting this off till later in the year most likely or early next year.
OP - I'm sorry for derailing your thread, hopefully this is all good information for you to use also

I built mine for under $900 and it runs every game I have at maximum graphics settings with no lag. FPS isn't through the roof though.
Top end graphics cards cost like $1000. Totally unnecessary and you can double them up even. You can spend like $5000 building a PC if you just want to burn money, but what's the point?

I see.
I definitely don't have that kind of dough laying around. Best I got is maybe $600~? Im trying to get into a new place and will be taking on new expenses so the extra money just isnt there. But I want a gaming comp, even if I'm not gaming they're just fast as hell and the way to go IMO.

For around $1000 you can build a custom, very respectable gaming PC that will handle most games out there just fine. If you want to go for something more "top of the line" and bleeding edge with some of the best components.. you're looking at closer to 2-3k. You CAN build a basic gaming PC for around 500-600.. but you are going to be skimping on parts. Either way, it will still blow away any laptop of a similar price or a $500 console for that matter. I'd sooner shoot for around the 1k mark.. if you want to go with Intel/Nvidia .. and you definitely want an SSD.

Yeah I'll have to save for quite some time to have actual extra money to build if I went for $1K.
The link Green Rabbit provided is full of information.. It lead me to a page called PcPartPicker which then lead me to this
http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/DFPxFT/fx-6300-gtx-960-gaming-pc
and from there amazon had a page already built for every part that PC would need for that build
http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=11437317011&tag=featuredguide-20
That build is $650. Any good or just basic?

I was looking at the build the other day. Its not so bad. AMD processors are not the POS they used to be, and have grown quite well. I would make it 16gb ram, add another ssd so you can raid them, and upgrade that 1tb hard drive to a 4tb one.

SSD is a solid state drive, they are unlike mechanical hard drives, in that there are no moving parts or spinning discs. They are extremely fast, roughly 3-100x faster than most mechanical hard drives on average. Due to no moving parts they also have a much longer lifespan and take up much less space. Basically once you go SSD on your boot drive, you'll never be able to use a regular HDD again as your primary, it will be too painful and slow compared to the SSD. Mechanicals are good for backing up data now Any good computer especially gaming computers have an SSD these days. If the rest of your components kicks ass but you are only using a standard mechanical drive, that would become your bottleneck.

The easy simple way to think of SSD is to just think about someone taking a bunch of memory/RAM chips and building them into an actual storage device instead of just temporary storage. A hard drive with no mechanical moving parts. No platter, no read/write head. Its basically just memory in a configuration where it can actually hold data even through power loss.
SUPER SUPER fast. For the majority of the time PC's have been end use affordable, the mechanical hard drive was THE limiting factor in overall speed. The slowest part of a computer with exception to the floppy or CD/DVD drives. Even super slow old ram can read/write data exponentially faster then a mechanical hard drive with today's technology can.

Right.. it is essentially RAM on steroids. Hence the idea of the old school RAMDisks.. which now with SSDs are kinda irrelevant. Boot times and programs initializing and read/write speeds is where you see the night and day difference. I was completely blown away when I first installed Windows to an SSD and it booted up into Windows in like, 7 seconds from a cold boot. Photoshop loads up instantly as fast as the intro screen loads.. SSDs are the best. And just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. You can get a 1TB SSD for ~300 now. That's like what a 80GB SSD cost just a few years ago.

I can't wait until we get to the point where mechanical drives just are not even made anymore and everything is some variation of SSD or newer tech. They are such a substantial leap over the old mechanical method and we are getting close to a point with silicone and processors in general where we either need to come up with a completely new type, or we will start hitting the ceiling for a bit. Sort of like the ceiling that mechanical drives had and were for so long in computers.
One hurdle down, 1390821590423 more to go!

Ridiculous really
You pay 800€ here for a comp with 3.5ghz
2800 bucks for 2.6ghz sounds like a ripoff.
i'm so making a monsterrig for 1k lol
If you buy those parts custom
the hell you paying for for those laptops? 1-1.5k for assembly?

Uugggh you guys are making me want to start my build so bad. My internet speed is 1.5mbps at my house so building a sweet rig would be kind of pointless until i move in like 4-6 months.
7 second boot time
im used to like 3~ minutes

CPU clock speed is not everything.. also those are 2.6GHz base clock and boost up to 3.5-3.6GHz btw
Most of the price of those is from the GPUs in them.. +SSDs +memory.. . One has a 980m, 24GB DDR3 and a 256GB SSD. one has 2x970ms in SLI.. saw another one with 2x TitanMs and a 1TB SSD.. They are gaming GPUs for a reason, they have beastly GPUs in them + a lot of memory and SSDs and usually better screens.

GPU's are actually more powerful then CPU's in a lot of aspects now a days. Thats part of the reason why they are so damn expensive. 2 titans in a laptop. Jeeeebus.

Totally incorrect. Both have different functions. You cant compare the two.
