Advice for someone trying to get started in art?
    #22171225 - 08/31/15 08:54 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm 20 years old and I've always been fascinated with art and it wasn't until recently that I really started to get interested in psychedelic art (even just simple sacred geometry patterns) and I was wondering if you guys might have some tips/advice or some basic starter pictures to get me started? I know I could just pick up a pencil and pad but I'm not exactly sure where to get started (as silly as that sounds).

--------------------
How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

my only request is that you don't limit yourself to "psychedelic" art

the human experience has plenty of material for great art..and really what arts about right? idk

A very good point. I appreciate you addressing this because that actually was my intentions to focus on strictly "psychedelic" art.

quit your job, get rid of all your shit, and travel with just a back pack and some art supplies

This actually isn't too far off from what I'm doing :rasta:

So I decided to practice on a simple cartoon and I meant to draw this....

And I ended up drawing angry suicidal toast throwing up the peace sign.

Start an account on DeviantArt

It's a great way to get your work out there and get noticed

Find influence in everything. Go check out some museums close to where you live. IMO&E seeing art on an electronic screen pales in comparison to experiencing the craftsmanship of a piece in person.

When it comes to any sort of art, never limit yourself. The best advice i can give is to not take any advice from anyone. But if i were to say, only listen to your heart. Do not overthink it, and when you are creating art remember to think of it as only art, nothing more. Not psychedelic art. Let your mind take you to places ypu have never been to.

Just start drawing whatever feels good and think about it later.

two quotes i go by.

"good artists copy, but great artists steal." - steve jobs

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." -Einstein

cultivating technical skills is quite straight forward i.e. practice makes perfect, but not everyone can train creativity and there are certain methods on creating material you would deem objective to most eyes.

One good method for psychedelic art is to log all the archetypes you experience in your trips and then look on the internet and grab all the art you can find that reminds you of your trip and then take elements from each of those to create a new piece including your own archetypes and themes.

The creative process definitely seems to build on what draws your eye.

for instance, my digital painting on my sig is a mash up of Ilene Meyer, Alex Grey, Luke Brown, and SalviaDroid.
