Oyster Spawn

Hello everyone, I am a long time lurker on here and i never really post anything ever. I recently bought some oyster spawn and believe it may be contaminated. I don't want bad mouth the sponsor until i know for sure it is bad spawn and if they will do anything to help me get the problem resolved. I just wanted some opinions from someone with more experience with spawn and how long its shelf life is. The bag says it was made on March 31st, 2015. So the question is, should the spawn still be good, or is it past its prime? It did not look fully colonized at all and from the patch it kinda has a sour smell. From reading on this amazing site all the time, im kinda thinking its contaminated. I will post a picture in a little while, i just wanted to see based of off what I said if anyone had some guesses. Sorry if there is bad spelling or this has alot of grammer issues. I am typing this pretty fast on my phone and this phone sucks. Please and thank you for any and all help everyone!

If you bought a presterilized spawn bag then there's a chance that it is contaminated because you don't know how it was put together. Sour smells are never a good sign. It's best if you just make your own spawn bags. It's really easy and if something goes wrong, you can retrace your steps to improve your technique in the future. Plus it's cheaper.

This was an oyster spawn bag that was made by the supplier. I didnt actually inoculate this bag myself. I was trying to do a little experiment and I shouldve known better. It really is much cheaper to do it all myself I was just hoping to bypass making my own oyster spawn. I was going to take a clone of the oysters that grew and make a culture in agar. I do appreciate the input and advice though, its always nice to have someone help.

A bag of oyster spawn made on March 31 should be fully colonized by April 10th, depending on size though. Oyster mycelium is really sweet smelling. It can be white to light grey and not as thick as cube mycelium when immature. But way thicker than cube mycelium when mature. Your bag or grow kit should be solid white by now with a half ish thick layer of white mycelium. It's probably bad. No reason to bad mouth a supplier. It most likely wasn't deliberate. Ask for a replacement
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Thats what I have heard before about the sweet smell. It is no where near thick white at all. It has a few white spots but thats it. I really didn't mean i would bad mouth them about the bag because I understand things happen sometimes. I'm the farthest from a good writer and cant always get out what i actually mean so i apologize for that. I would only bad mouth a company unwilling to help fix the problem. From everything I have read in the sponsor forum, they will help me out. So thank you for the information I really do appreciate it. Just have to wait a little longer before doing my experiment, not that big of a deal:)
