Any ideas at all?
    #22169766 - 08/31/15 03:43 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I know it looks horrible and its in such bad condition I can't tell that much about it but I w just wondering if anyone had any idea what the hell it could be. It was found in some grass in western NC but that's pretty much all I know.

Possibly a beat up Amanita sp.

If you posted more photos, from different angles (including a shot of the gills), you might get more replies.

Def looks like an old beat up rained on amanita pantherina maybe amerimuscaria? I see partial leftover veil and remnants of concentric rings towards base.

Also this grass you found it in...by chance near any pine trees?

No it was just out in the yard there were no trees anywhere near it, and thank you for the replies.

is there one that grows in grass?  i suppose there could be wood substrate but the ones i've recently seen were directly from trunks of trees.

Well I just started researching the genus, but from what I understand it seems more likely to find a Volvariella in the grass than an Amanita. Plus the volva looks like what you would see in Amanitas from section vaginatae or caesareae(this one looks like neither) and in Volvariellas. I'm not really sure though, this is just my understanding.

Long story short I figured it was worth tossing the name out there .
