Inoculation, incubation, birthing of the cakes: all complete.
I have 6 brf/verm cakes, birthed from 4oz jars several days ago. Theyve been in my sgfc since then, resting on a bed of soaked perlite. I mist several times a day. The cakes seem to be doing well.
I've never dunked/rolled them. should i bother?
Also, I have noticed some black spots appearing on the top of the cake where there is no mycelium. Is this the deadly black mold?

Those cakes were not fully colonized mate, and yes thats mold.
You need to search up on recent teks, and never place your cakes directly on the perlite, they will start a futile attempt to colonize it, and eventually get waterlogged, contamned and so on. Lay them on top of a piece of tinfoil on the perlite, or the lids from your jars.
Not these cakes though, out with them. Next go around though

damn, that bad huh? We were considering slicing the infected tops off with a knife and crossing our fingers for the other 99% of the mycelium..

Such attempts have been tried many times over the years, i think some saved a few pieces of some cakes, but honestly it is not worth it. You might end up not being able to cultivate anything in your home for a long time if you try to skimp on the steps.
Better to just be safe than sorry and start anew. brown rice and verm is cheap if you want to keep your cakes bury them somewhere nice.

IME that is just plain fearmongering. I've chucked plenty of triched out subs that I took my time throwing away. It's extremely rare for me to get anything on my plates in my SAB, and I work next to my fridge.
In terms of contaminating your fruiting chamber, just wash it down to drop the sporeload a bit for the next round, but generally speaking fully colonized subs do not contam until they are ready to die.
Absolutely get going on another round, but you might as well salavage anything you can. You have nothing to lose. Probably best not to take spore prints from this round if there are trich spores all over in the environment.
Are those dark spots on the verm layer or the the PF sub. Also, dunk and roll would probably be a bad idea when your sub is strugling with contams.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Yea you should put some sterile tin foil under each cake And about the dunk and roll, you don't have to after birthing (although it is recommended). How ever you should definitely at least dunk them after each flush

Fruiting is not a sterile process. No need to sterilize foil, just quick wipe with some iso. You absolutely must dunk your cake after birthing. It is not always necessary to dunk after other flushes.
