Hello! We have found some mushrooms and have no idea if they are edible or not. Being unable to find them online and knowing that we shouldn't eat them unless we are sure they are edible we were wondering if anyone could help us out?
Habitat: Found growing in open field of grass, in the downs of southern England. The particular area that the mushroom was found is very near the sea.
Gills: Darkish brown with slight pink hint.
Stem: Roughly 100mm in length with ring around the upper portion
Cap: Roughly 80mm diameter, white with slight yellowing in middle. Flat with slight downward arc.

If it doesn't smell like poster paint then it should be edible.
That's not for all species, of course, but should be true of those in the genus Agaricus.

P.S. it's unlikely anyone else will be able to either. Agaricus species usually fit into one of 2 catagories when eating, ones that are poisonous and everything else, regardless of knowing the exact species. Which is to say that for this genus it's usually enough to know that it's not one of the poisonous species for it to be considered edible. The one you need to be aware of, and avoid, is Agaricus xanthodermus. Details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agaricus_xanthodermus Note the yellow bruising. This is a key identifying feature. The usual rule is that if it doesn't stain yellow in that way and doesn't smell bad when cooked then it is safe to eat. However I'm not going to suggest that that is what you do because for other genera of mushrooms, and in general, this would be very bad practice. And then also you have to be sure (for other occasions) that what you have is actually an Agaricus species and not just that you think it is, so there is that too. If you are new to mushrooms i suggest learning to ID the deadly ones first: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deadly_fungi Then at least you can know if what find isn't one of those. A good starting point would be Amanita phalloides, Amanita virosa, Clitocybe dealbata and Cortinarius rubellus/orellanus

Why not? The one you found is definitely an Agaricus. If it smells fine then you can eat it.

Yeah if it doesn't stain yellow it should be good.
-------------------- I give you the choice of 2 pills.
With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.
