Alice In Chains is the best rock band of the 90's

And there's absolutely nothing you can do to dispute this obvious fact.
Absolutely. Nothing.
Even their Unplugged album blows away everybody else's. I will, however, take suggestions for second best rock band of the 90's.
1. AIC
2. Pearl Jam 3. Stone Temple Pilots 4. Tool? 5. Too high right now

You forgot about Smashing Pumpkins.
Nirvana should definitely be on this list also.
I wouldn't consider Tool a band from the nineties as Lateralus, their best album to date in my opinion, was released in 2001, and they are still making new music supposedly...

Very true, for some reason I was thinking 99, I guess I'm just old now.
Revised list:
1. AIC 2. Pearl Jam 3. Smashing Pumpkins 4. STP 5. Nirvana? Maaaayyybbeeee?

I really wish we could include Deftones in this group as Around the Fur came out in 1997 and is an amazing album..White pony came out in 2000, everything else they did after is meh.
So much for wishful thinking.
Around the Fur-Deftones
One of the best albums of the nineties next to Siamese Dream.
In my opinion. Sorry getting off topic.

Yeah Deftones would definitely be up there if White Pony was released a year sooner (and if they didn't completely fall off afterwards).

Pearl Jam is fucking awful. their singer has no range and the music is way overplayed on the radio. they are the most annoying and awful band of the 90s.
even classic rock stations play that crap thats mainly why i dont like them

Radiohead doesn't count as a rock band really but to my mind they're pretty much the only decent thing to emerge from the nineties. Alice in chains has like... two good songs

You're crazy man the nineties were awesome. I may just think that though because I was born in 1990, so all those old songs bring back a lot of nostalgia for me. That being said...
Radiohead is probably my favorite all around band, but I have burnt myself out on listening to them at the moment. Every album is completely different, which can be said about a lot of bands, but Radiohead really does it for me.

I might be overly harsh on the nineties, but when I compare the amount of stuff I love from the 60s-80s with the 90s... just not many bands that stand up to the comparison. It doesn't help I'm not into any kinds of metal really, nor rap, hip hop or grunge so beyond that... what did the 90s have?

Third Eye Blind, Alanis Morissette, and a few one or two hit wonders.
There is no arguing 60's and 70's were the best era for music, at least in my opinion.

Regarding the topic. I concur with Alice in Chains, very noteworthy and memorable.
I'd say Tool, but I don't really consider them a "rock" band.

I agree, I could never choose a favorite 90's band.
Although it'd probably be Tool, their first 3 albums were released 92, 93, and 96.
So I don't know how or why they wouldn't be considered 90's.

I just have to say that you guys saying Tool isn't the 90's are completely wrong.
I bought Opiate when it first came out in 1992. It is still by far my favorite Tool album.
The video for Sober got a lot of heavy MTV rotation in the early 90's when they still played music videos.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how incorrect it is.
To me Tool didn't even begin to suck until the 2000's, lol.

In my worthless opinion, as far as straight up rock n roll bands go, The Supersuckers are number one in the 90's, the 00's, and the 10's.
They play rock n roll songs about rock n roll, oftentimes with rock n roll right there in the song title.

Yes, what is the rationale for this idiocy? They formed in 1990 and their two best-selling albums were released in the 90s. What more is needed to qualify? Disbanding before 2000?

Also Rage Against the Machine is better than Alie in Chains. Not to say they weren't a really good band, but they weren't the best band from the 90's.

90's death metal was zee best 90s genre
All other 'rock' genres seemed to pride themselves on dumbing down and simplifying their music, which is an understandable reaction after the wankery of the 80s - but it went too far.

Lateralus came out in 2001.
Everything they have done has been great, but they are not a band from the nineties.

How do you even know? By your own admission you were still pooping in your pants when their first album came out, lol.
By the way, RATM is what got me into Tool in the first place.
Since Maynard was on their first album and all....

Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Since 1995, Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist, replacing their original bassist Paul D'Amour.

Tool is definitely from the 90's...if your argument is that they 'don't count' because lateralus came out in 2001 then you are forgetting their album from 96 Aenima...which is a damn classic.
I was just listening to aic when I saw this thread. They were one of the best. It helps that they ended early because they didn't have a chance to get old and make shitty albums..at least layne didn't just like nirvana. Aic has come out with a couple new albums recently. Black gives way too blue which had a few classic caliber songs. And their most recent one had one classic song. It helps that Cantrell did a lot of vocals back in the day so it not completely different.
But look at all the other 90's bands have released shit albums recently Soundgarden-king animal Pearl jam-lightning bolt Stone temple pilots- self titled Red hot chili peppers- I'm with you Janes addiction- the great escape artist
I'm surprised no one has mentioned faith no more...they were amazing to me! They came out with a new album recently which is excellent. People are also forgetting Janes addiction!!! Ritual de lo habitual is legendary. My proof is the songs 'three days' and 'then she did'. Janes addiction broke in 90 and faith no more 89. A considerable amount of time before nirvana

Kinda in a similar vein of music that -didn't- dumb itself down in the 90s is Dream Theater... Never was a big fan of their vocals but instrumentally pretty incredible tings
OH
and how the fuck did we forget Primus?!
Maybe my favorite 90's band that ever existed.
Sooo good

I feel the SAME way about dream theater the lyrics a too dramatic for me. But instrumentally they are amazing..I love the song New Millenium. Awesome synth and bass.
Of course Primus is the shit!!

I used to play the bassline for three days and then she did over and over

My favorite is Korn but that is just because that is what my older brother listened to a lot while i was growing up and it grew on me. I still listen to them all the time.
I like alice in chains along with basically every other band thats been listed. Lol
I saw someone said Primus anyone else liked them? I like some of their songs. Apparently les claypool still makes music i think. Hes definately a good bass player. Not the best singer tho

Faith No More, Alice in Chains, NIN, Tool(Aenima), Primus. Wouldn't really say NIN is rock. Other than that I can't really fuck with 90's music these days.

Why does everyone sleep on Soundgarden? The shit they put out in the late 80's was incredible. Louder than Love blows me away every time. If I had to make a "grunge era" list it would be:
1 Soundgarden 2 Alice in chains 3 mother love bone 4 mad season 5 tool 6 rage against the machine 7 Red hot chili peppers 8 Radiohead, pearl jam, STP, Nirvana, smashing pumpkins, deftones, primus, Bush (sixteen-stone, nothing else really), greenday was sick back then (dookie and insomniac), 311 (their self-titled album was the shit back in 95), hell even the real early staind shit was badass (their shit BEFORE Break the Cycle). I appreciated beck and oasis as well. And of course you could put sublime anywhere on the list above. I also liked the foo fighters when they first came out and weezer has some catchy tunes.

And for whoever started with the 'Tool isn't a 90's band' remember that opiate was released in '92, undertow in '93, and Aenima in '96. So technically the 90s was tool's busiest decade.

Yeah this is not rocket science, any rock band that existed during the 1990s is a rock band of the 90s, even if they existed in other time periods as well.

Okay, I just want to say somethin'.
Just because a band starts in a decade doesn't mean that's the only decade they're from "XY band isn't from the nineties, it's from the eighties" is ridiculous. If they were active in that decade, they're "from" then.

I wanted my first concert to be RATM/Cypress Hill, but my parents wouldn't let me go since they heard people were dying in the mosh pit or whatever. The let me go to see Ghostface Killa and a bunch of the Wu Tang crew tho, I think that may have been my first as my cousin was a big fan I loved it but I was so out of place
I also went to see Busta Rhymes when I was like 15 or so I think.

No. Their era has to do with their origination because as you should be able to tell, it evolves quite rapidly. But if you have a band that's first real album was in '89 and they hit it huge, they're a 90's band as long as they kept going. 90's sound is different than any other decade and a lot of people recognize that. I get what you're saying but it doesn't mean anything when you're categorizing the bands.

I would say if the peak of their popularity occurred during any part of the 90's, I would consider them a 90's band. But yeah, I wouldn't call the Grateful Dead or Pink Floyd a 90's band, even though they both were active during the 90's.

So, let's say a band starts in the eighties, but they're extremely popular in the nineties. Do they not exist in that time period just because they started earlier?
So, let me get this straight, a band is only active during the year of their formation?
If you say so

If you say so
I was pretty clear about what you're assuming.
Ok.. how about Death Magnetic? It came out, what, 8 years ago? Does that make Metallica 'millenial metal'? No.. they're 80's thrash metal.
With every generation of music comes the musical variances. You can hear the sound man. We're talking about 90's music dude.. grunge and raw hip hop central. You don't hear those type of qualities in newer acts because their generation is simply different.

I absolutely love Alice in chains, but they were formed in the late 80's, don't know if anyone mentioned that yet. As were rhcp, and soundgarden, and stp. So if they had to be formed in that era then none of these bands fit the bill.
Everyone is arguing about something so insignificant as the decade bands were from. Its good music, just shut up and listen.

Yeah I dig a lot of 90's music. The early 90's were my highschool years and also first years experimenting with psychedelics, so obviously I have some cool associations to a lot of it.

The Grateful Dead are an 80's band because Touch of Grey.

What 80s rock band is better?
And not a 70s rock band that happened to make a shit album in 81.
Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Police.
Also Rage Against the Machine is better than Alie in Chains. Not to say they weren't a really good band, but they weren't the best band from the 90's.
The Smiths are better than AIC or Rage in your opinion?
Well alright then

Everyone is arguing about something so insignificant as the decade bands were from. Its good music, just shut up and listen.

You expect nothing less? That's good because if you or the other guy could read the thread title, you'd notice the topic you're complaining about is entirely relevant.

The topic relates to the best rock bands of the 90s, not the best bands that fall under the genre of "90s rock" or have a stereotypical "90s sound" or the best bands that are known exclusively for their work in the 90s. To be the "best rock band" of say 1995, is it a requirement that the band only existed in that year, or that it not also be the "best rock band" of some other year as well? No, of course not.

On that example, I'd just say that the majority of the band's success, or their best album, would have had to occur in 1995.

IMO that's an odd way to define your terms. To be the best band of 1995, a band:
- needs to have existed in 1995 - needs to have made music in 1995 that was "better" by some metric than all the other music made in 1995.
1995 being their best year is a different matter entirely.
If Lance Armstrong was the best cyclist in the Tour de France one year, does that imply that he was not the best cyclist in the Tour de France in some other year, or that it was his best year in the Tour de France? No, it implies only that he was better than the other competitors that year.

Tyler was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. Along with deftones - my own summer (shove it) and greenday - brain stew. Those were all beginner level songs.

Weezer is good.
What about Weezer? I like Weezer.
I suppose that isn't really rock, but it can be to some.
Okay here is my list in no particular order:
1.Tool 2.Deftones 3.Smashing Pumpkins 4.Nirvana 5.Radiohead
We should do a top ten, that was hard.
