I like how this has turned into another 90s nostalgia thread. Can't forget Weird Al
Forgot about the Butthole Surfers. They were awesome

Okay, I just want to say somethin'.
Just because a band starts in a decade doesn't mean that's the only decade they're from "XY band isn't from the nineties, it's from the eighties" is ridiculous. If they were active in that decade, they're "from" then.

I wanted my first concert to be RATM/Cypress Hill, but my parents wouldn't let me go since they heard people were dying in the mosh pit or whatever. The let me go to see Ghostface Killa and a bunch of the Wu Tang crew tho, I think that may have been my first as my cousin was a big fan I loved it but I was so out of place
I also went to see Busta Rhymes when I was like 15 or so I think.

No. Their era has to do with their origination because as you should be able to tell, it evolves quite rapidly. But if you have a band that's first real album was in '89 and they hit it huge, they're a 90's band as long as they kept going. 90's sound is different than any other decade and a lot of people recognize that. I get what you're saying but it doesn't mean anything when you're categorizing the bands.

I would say if the peak of their popularity occurred during any part of the 90's, I would consider them a 90's band. But yeah, I wouldn't call the Grateful Dead or Pink Floyd a 90's band, even though they both were active during the 90's.

So, let's say a band starts in the eighties, but they're extremely popular in the nineties. Do they not exist in that time period just because they started earlier?
So, let me get this straight, a band is only active during the year of their formation?
If you say so

If you say so
I was pretty clear about what you're assuming.
Ok.. how about Death Magnetic? It came out, what, 8 years ago? Does that make Metallica 'millenial metal'? No.. they're 80's thrash metal.
With every generation of music comes the musical variances. You can hear the sound man. We're talking about 90's music dude.. grunge and raw hip hop central. You don't hear those type of qualities in newer acts because their generation is simply different.

I absolutely love Alice in chains, but they were formed in the late 80's, don't know if anyone mentioned that yet. As were rhcp, and soundgarden, and stp. So if they had to be formed in that era then none of these bands fit the bill.
Everyone is arguing about something so insignificant as the decade bands were from. Its good music, just shut up and listen.

Yeah I dig a lot of 90's music. The early 90's were my highschool years and also first years experimenting with psychedelics, so obviously I have some cool associations to a lot of it.

The Grateful Dead are an 80's band because Touch of Grey.

What 80s rock band is better?
And not a 70s rock band that happened to make a shit album in 81.
Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Police.
Also Rage Against the Machine is better than Alie in Chains. Not to say they weren't a really good band, but they weren't the best band from the 90's.
The Smiths are better than AIC or Rage in your opinion?
Well alright then

You expect nothing less? That's good because if you or the other guy could read the thread title, you'd notice the topic you're complaining about is entirely relevant.

The topic relates to the best rock bands of the 90s, not the best bands that fall under the genre of "90s rock" or have a stereotypical "90s sound" or the best bands that are known exclusively for their work in the 90s. To be the "best rock band" of say 1995, is it a requirement that the band only existed in that year, or that it not also be the "best rock band" of some other year as well? No, of course not.
