I thought ABM was supposed to be hard to grow..
    #22168800 - 08/31/15 12:00 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So, I been reading up on ABM for months.

I have a 2 cultures of it.

I have expanded both cultures out to a large spawn bag each. Culture #1 took a while to get going from agar, went from agar to a 2lb spawn bag, then to a 15lb spawn bag. The 2lb spawn bag took like 2-3 months to colonize, it had me worried. The 15lb bag took about a month. TBH, the spawn sat for another month or two before being spawned. I was finishing up some grows and then cleaning out the grow space before proceeding with the ABM, things took longer than planned.

So then I got culture #2 a couple months ago. I immediately began expanding it out. Went from agar to a qt grain jar then to a 10lb spawn bag. Because culture #1 had been sitting for a bit I spawned it first on the 23rd. I planned on getting some substrate prepped to spawn culture #2 to this week.

So last night after a long night of mycology work I went to check on things in my spawn room. I was about to shut the lights off and turn in for the night but something caught my eye in the ABM spawn bag I was going to use this week... Holy shit! Mushrooms!

The 10lbs of grain spawn these are growing on is WBS with floaters included plus a cup of spent coffee grounds and a touch of gypsum.

I thought these guys needed compost and live casings and lots of substrate aeration and FAE etc?

I hope I have this much luck with my spawned substrates!

with the commercial culture(s) I got from lipa I had no problems getting some fruits.  the problem is that it does not fruit, or rather pin, consistently.  in a commercial setting you may have square meters of bed without any pins.  this is not viable even at a price point 10-50x that of regular buttons.  congrats, btw!  my favorite mushroom so far.  a  way to tell if you have a good fruiting culture is to case a grain jar.

Cool, thanks for that info drake89. This is a culture I got from Lipa that is fruiting in the bag.

I can't wait to eat them. Every time I look at the pics I get really hungry! LoL!

I have been looking for a wild specimen here in Hawaii to grab a culture from.  Sadly they are not found on my island and I only make it off island a few times a year.  Anyone know of a culture sourced from Hawaii?  I'm working on growing edibles found here.
