Erythroxylum Novogranatense (E Novo) Seedlings

Somewhere in May or June (4 - 5 months ago) I purchased 7 (expensive, holy shit) e novo seeds (from a U.S. source) and planted directly in soil. When they arrived in the mail I was pretty sure they were all dead, they didn't seem fresh and were only very mildly moist in a small baggy accompanied by a dried out papertowel piece. For a month and a half, I manually moistened the soil with rain water, and had them placed in a plastic dome. Nothing happened.
The soil began to grow fungus and what looked to be penicillin or something, things weren't looking promising. Just for the heck of it I decided to take them out of the dome, put them in plastic cups and place them outside. It rained multiple times, filling up the cups with water, basically drowning them. I let it evaporate and ignored it. The soil dried out, then got drown again.
About a week ago I was walking by them (I haven't even looked at them in a week or two) and thought to myself, this is pointless, and an eyesore - I should just throw them away.
POOF! 2 sprouts! I immediately transplanted them to larger (and nicer looking) pots and brought them indoors as it is getting ready to get chilly here in the midwest, and I plan on having them in here anyway.

How much light would you recommend? I was under the understanding that they didn't need much direct light. It is under a window that is significantly raised above where its table is. Can I supplement with a table lamp left on in close proximity?

i dont know how much exactly.
im live in the middle east, here the sun is very strong... when the seedling was under 70W of CFL the was very tall and tiny (searching for light), i move them out side to shade (the temp was around 34C)...
them was look much better... now 2 of the seedling is on the shade, and them get angle for to the sun direct, and two of the seedling is on 5-6 of noon sun - very strong sun, and them look very nice...
i know much of the people say the novo dosnt need allot of sun, but my experience show that they like allot of sun
p.s two of the seeds under the cfl was germinate, but not success to remove the coat of the seeds and died... ..
Good luck my friend..

I appreciate the information, experience, and good luck wishes. Thats awesome that yours are doing well. I've only recently began growing things, plants and fungus alike.
It is definitely teaching me patience.
I don't know much at all about this plants natural habitat, but I would think that it is full sun - which is why I was very surprised to hear anyone say that it likes the shade. I am just a beginner so what do I know though?

Well, I'll go ahead and throw my 2 cents in. I wouldn't give it very strong light. They don't need it. They grow very well in a window without much direct light. Maybe an hour or two at most of direct sun through the window is all I have found they need....
What is going to ensure that the seed coat falls off is good humidity. If it gets too dry, it won't fall off. What I have done before is mist them and keep in a humidity chamber until the seed coat falls off. Until they get a set or two of leaves, they don't like being too dry. Once they pass that small seedling point, they don't like being too wet... They are strange.
Anyway, like I said just my 2c. Either way, good luck with them, honestly, it's amazing that they sprouted after that long of doing nothing!

Awesome! Thanks so much for the input, first thing tomorrow morning i'll make some kind of dome cover for them to help with humidity. Today I was kind of noticing that it doesn't look like that coat is going to come off easy... It would be very disappointing if it died now! Is there any point at which you'd want to help the coat off? I know that its a no-no, but is there any way to tell when the plant is struggling and going to die if its not removed?
I've been misting them regularly, however my house is kind of dry, especially as we get closer to winter. I was reading something about having a fan on them to strengthen the stem, but this also dries it out quickly too.

Let me chime in with 2 cents. They don't need direct sunlight. They don't need strong fertilization for some time and even then a slow release is perfect. I grow mine under an elms shade and it works perfect. They will get some sun very early morning and it totally works. I live in deep south subtropical Texas. I tweak my grows accordingly.
This will be my last go at novogranatense. I've grown it successfully before but my wife will not let me be happy at all so she is their ultimate demise. Anywho they are doing well now but never be discouraged and just keep plugging along.

Alright, couldn't sleep because I am paranoid that the humidity is too low and the seed coat won't fall off. I had to get up and cut out a makeshift dome. I feel better now

Whne they get tall enough you can gent pry off the seed hull and the plant will open up nicely.

Wow, probably just coincidence, but less than 10 hours after putting the makeshift dome up, the seed case is coming off. If you look closely at this pic you can see where the stem splits into the leaves as the plant is pushing the casing off.

Nice! I was just about to pop in and mention I wouldn't worry about pulling off the seed coat manually until you absolutely had to. Glad to see it's working out! As for a fan, you can do that once it gets a tad bit older and will tolerate lower humidity. Once they get out of their seedling stage, they REALLY take off with their growth.

Wow!! Exciting day! Less than 24 hours after the water bottle terrarium and the seed cover is completely off plant #1! Thanks for the tips guys! How long should I leave that over the plant??

I assume you are saying to leave the chamber on for now, right?
That's what I would suggest. Leave it until it gets a few pairs of leaves... Now you have to play a balancing act between keeping humidity on it and not letting it dampen off.

Take it off. I start off mine with no humidity but when they get tall enough I just pull apart my seed hull.

Well, I will yield to ferrel's advice, then. I'm pretty sure he has more experience in this area than me. I've only gotten one to adulthood so far...
