Quote:

Humans and canines have a long history of working together, with the use of hunting dogs stretching back to perhaps 20,000 years ago. And in some cultures, it seems ancient shamanic practices related to hunting success have extended to their four-legged partners: according to a new paper in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, at least 43 difference species of psychedelic plants have been used in cultures around the world to allegedly improve the performance of hunting dogs.
The researchers focused on the Ecuadorian Shuar and Quichua people - who use at least 22 species "for ethnoveterinary purposes" - trying to determine the possible pharmacological basis for the use of these plants with hunting dogs:
Quote:
The use of psychoactive substances to improve a dog׳s hunting ability seems counterintuitive, yet its prevalence suggests that it is both adaptive and that it has an underlying pharmacological explanation. We hypothesize that hallucinogenic plants alter perception in hunting dogs by diminishing extraneous signals and by enhancing sensory perception (most likely olfaction) that is directly involved in the detection and capture of game. If this is true, plant substances also might enhance the ability of dogs to detect explosives, drugs, human remains, or other targets for which they are valued.

Very interesting... Always knew that there was a connection, because even with mushrooms I tend to turn like some ninja cat that has an increase in all senses and very energetic.. I guess this some how validates Terence mckenna's theory lol

I'm sure they weren't only giving it to the dogs, the humans definitely took them to for hunting purposes. Definitely makes Terrence McKenna's theory more solid.

I hope nobody looks down on me for either of my following examples, but they were both unintentional...
My dog chomped on some mycelium when I was birthing jars about a year ago. I didn't even see it, but I put the pieces together when I saw my pup acting SUPER strange and realized a cake had a nice little chunk out of it. She was wagging her tail happily, but her head was moving in a circle for about two hours. She couldn't do much walking either. But she was happy and content, so I reviewed toxicity in canines and deemed it a funny accident. I would never intentionally give my pup the big booms, but I loved on her like crazy while she tripped and I don't think she's ever been more of my shadow since that event.
The other, is something I've been contemplating dealing with lately but I've been unable to find information to deem it harmful... She likes to nibble on the morning glory LEAVES that I have growing around my house. I keep the pods, though, hardly any of mine have flowered this year (about 2 in 25 vines have produced 1 flower each). When watering my garden, I notice she gravitates SPECIFICALLY to the morning glories. I have read that alkaloid content is LOW in leaves, but that doesn't mean that they aren't present. Although a female dog (uterine contractions noted), it doesn't seem to give any ill effects, not even vomiting. So I let her be her.
I guess the moral of my stories are that my dog seeks hallucinogens on her own? I dunno, I'm a bit high and got rambling, sorry.

Actually dogs seem to really love mushrooms, they tend to go looking for certain hallucinogenic mushrooms and they some how can actually tell the difference between the poisonousness ones, they even know which herb could aid them with digestion or what ever trouble they have.. I read some where that there are many reports of dogs taken to the vet because their owners thought something was weird about them... and the vet just tells them that their tripping on mushrooms, and that it occurs frequently so nothing to worry about hahaha xD

They look like they have downward pointing tusks, but maybe that's just their tongues.
