desiccant drying chamber.. anyone?
    #22167033 - 08/30/15 10:29 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I've been on a mad search for the perfect during chambe. I'll be using damprid for the agent.
I'm well aware that the chamber needs at least two racks
1 for the desiccant to sit off the bottom to drip water.
2 or more racks above desiccant for the mushies to sit on

My big question is does the chamber need to be completely sealed (air tight) or does it need air exchange or flow?
Thanks in advance for any input. Pics would also be awesome if you guys have any.

Back when I used one is was basically a shallow storage container with a lid. The desicant went in the bottom of the bin, I made a wooden frame with screen attached to the bottom to hold my mushrooms, 4 screws were screwed into the sides of all 4 corners of the tub and the tray would rest on the screws keeping the screen tray about a half inch above the desicant. Put the lid on and place the whole thing in a garbage bag. Fan dry them first for a day or you will eat up the desicant very fast

The chamber should be airtight

Desiccation isn't the best way to dry mushroom, airflow is better. A desiccator would be good for storage.

When in comes to drying any organic matter a store-bought dehydrator is the best option by miles.

I never thought to put screws in the container as a shelf that's brilliant lol I just duct taped screen to inside of tub looks like shit but does job I'm gonna total build frame and use screws sounds like much neater way of doing things

Heat and Potency

The actives in muchrooms dont break down until FAR past 300F, while most dehydrators never make it past 165F.

I use my dehydrator that gets to 150F+ for 12 hours and I get completely dry fruits with no  potency loss.

Psilocybin & Psilocin Chemistry

Use Heat!

I would get the nesco fd-37.....amazon most likely has the best deal...it was $35 there last time i bought 3.....lol.

F desicant. That shit can go to Hell. Fork out the money and by a food dehydrator. Get one with a temp dial if you are under the misconception that the heat will ruin your mushrooms.

Nah. Honestly since I asked everyone is saying the same thing. I don't think there is a dehydrator that can get hot enough to kill potency. Is fan drying still required though or just put em in fresh set and forget

Straight into the dehydrator, don't turn the dehydrator off for at least 10-12 hours, just check the dryness while it's on.  If you turn it off while they're still moist they'll turn very blue.

My first grow I tried desiccant, and it took FOREVER and only half dried them after 2 days. I ended up giving up and tossing them into the oven to dry. It worked, but not optimal.

Dehydrators are definitely one of the best and easiest methods around for drying. It will make that room have a mushroom smell while dehydrating.

They will all get the fruits dry in the exact same amount of time.....they do the exact same thing....one costs 30, the other 10x as much.....I have been thru 1 $30 nesco in 4 years.....I still have 4 that work great......I can dry 2x as much as you can and I still spent less than half.....most likely for the next 4 years.

Another 140 jars ready to be packed with grains that are soaking,

I'm not really into doing too many different varieties at once.

Ready?
It's super easy.
Y dehydrator broke recently and I went back to desiccant.

Fan dry for 24-72 hours, just place on a rack so air is pulled away from the shrooms. If it blows over the shrooms they get linty...

Take a sock and a qt jar lid. Put damprid in the toes of the sock and then put the lid inside as well.
Place the ring so it is holding the damprid incthe toes with the lid centered pretty close above it.
Then place ring around the outside of the sock, so you sock toes are going to be inside that jar with the damprid and the ankle of the sock will be floating on top of the lid.

After the specified period of time under fan conditions you will place into the jar.

After another day or 2 they are crcker dry.

If you are Drying alot of mushros this way you will need to change the sock and damprid

You can save the damprid, and dry the sock to be sustainable, which is always a bonus. Just do your research.

Have a good one.

:bathtub40lol:

What you got going on right now? I'll tell you what I got- 6 tubs of cams, 2 tubs of pink buf, 10 jars of b+ ready to go in 2 tubs in about 5 days, 10 jars of pe6 clones g2gd today, 4 jars of pan cyans just about ready to spawn, 2 jars of aa+ colonizing for further expansion, 2 jars of ape colonizing for further expansion, 2 more jars of cambodians colonizing for further expansion, ksss, ape, aa+, Cambodians and pan cyans on agar for more grain masters, a ksss plate pinning about ready for some pin clones and a syringe of some tak mountain I'm about ready to drop on agar.

I got 14 tubs of GT colonizing(or Z, didn't really label/pay attention....i know but eh.....) , I have about 80 or so jars full of sterilized grains ready for some agar PE wedges, and possibly APE, that is if they ever germinate....lol. Another 140 jars ready to be packed with grains that are soaking,

I'm not really into doing too many different varieties at once.

Pics would also be awesome if you guys have any.

fan dry for a few days
than take a plastic tub and fill in the damprid
cover the damprid with 5 layers of paper towls
take some chicken wire and cut so that the wire will fit in the tub as a rack
the shrooms should be dry within 2 days
You can dry pounds of shrooms at a time this way

why not space?
It's cheap and easy for drying bulk. How many dehydrators would one need to dry 5 pounds of shrooms at once? :hehehe:

you know why. 2 days of fanning is twice as long as it should take to get them cracker dry.
how big damprid chamber wouldnt you need for that? rather build that big a dehydrator, plenty of ways to DIY!

Did you see where the one guy took a dresser and cut a hole on top? He then put a fan on top of the dresser to circulate air into the dresser. Each dresser shelf was modified with screen shelving. hahahaha

I just have 1 dehydrator. :sun:

Ignore all suggestions for fan & desiccant drying. Dehydrator drying FTW. I have a 1000 watt nesco with 30 trays. I also have a 2nd unit, just in case. A friend is borrowing it right now for drying shit for teas.

The longer your fruits stay moist before you get them cracker dry the more potential potency loss you are subjecting the fruits too. So the difference is not just time & money. Especially if someone is trying to desiccant dry only, because that can be so slow the fruits can begin to rot and smell funky before they get fully dry, potentially causing more stomach discomfort when eaten as well.

wtf bd? there's plenty of reasons to cut fruits off the sub besides not wanting sub on their fruits.

on the other hand there are no good reasons to waste 2 days fan drying cubensis.
