perlite and BRF?
    #2216599 - 01/03/04 01:40 PM (13 years, 16 days ago)

I went to home depot and the guy said they didnt sell vermiculite any more because it's harmful if you breath it in too much, but he said perlite is a good substitute.  Is it possible to substitute perlite for vermiculite when mixing with BRF and water?  Would perlite work for cakes??

no just go to a few other stores or a hydroponics store.  Someone will have it.  Dont use perlite.

Not sure why you said it wont work. It does work, but probally not as well, afoaf has some jars knocked up with perlite right now. If I had a digi I'd take some pics, there comming along nicely.

From what I hear they evaporite water quicker, but as of now guys not having any problems. These where more or less just an experiment while he ran outta verm, I wouldnt suggest using perlite all the time but to awsner your question, Yes it does work.

it absorbs too much water and causes weak fruits and flushes

I got bored so I decided to experiment with perlite as a substitute. I used a mixture of 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup organic BRF, and 1/2 perlite and inoculated with PC Ecuador. Hopefully there will be some mycelium growth in the jar in a few days so I can post some pics.

actualy the reverse is true,it drys out too quickly and doesn't hold enough water, thats why it causes weak flushes and poor fruits.

A lot of hardware stores have told me they don't sell verm anymore. This one guy tried to argue with me that the verm I bought at another store was just leftover and that they won't have anymore because it's elegal.I told him he was full of shit and told him of a web site where he could buy as much as he wanted. He didn't like that cause customers were starting to look at him like the liar he was.You can get verm online at www.uline.com

So perlite dries out faster and that causes weak shiznit.. could you just compensate by periodically adding some more water to it?

you could fruit them directly on wet perlite, that would help keep the moisture content up.
