pressure cooker question

Hello everybody I've got a little query about sterilising rhye seed. i have a 5 litre electric pressure cooker which cooks at 900w, i am looking to sterilise 4 0.5 ltr jars in it. I found out that 900w of power is around about 3.7 psi. After doing some in depth research I've heard a lot about cooking at 15 psi for 1 hour, can I just use a longer cooking time with this pressure cooker say 2-3 hours ? Or is it not possible ? Any help appreciated.

A 900 watt electric cooker can get higher than 3.7 psi. They can get to 11, if I recall correctly. You better check onliine for your make and model before you condemn yourself to thinking you are only going to get 3 psi from your machine. If I am right, then you would have to cook your stuff maybe 15% longer than at 15 psi to do the job.

Oh thank you very much for your reply. I've been on line and checked the make and model and it does not state the psi it cooks at just says the power is 900w and there are no pressure settings. Now I did a little test run with the pressure cooker, I didn't put anything in it except water, i left it for 30 mins and there was no real steam released and what I mean is that I've seen a video on line of a 15 psi pc cooking and releases a lot more steam then what mine does leading me to think it s cooking at a much lower pressure, But i will just try cooking for a little longer and post back when I'm done. thanks

Yeah sounds like you just need to figure it out on the go, try 90 minutes first, then 1 hour, 45 mins, 2 hours etc. My presto's gauge died some time ago, but i just listen to when my rocker starts going crazy, and i know it's at or about 15 psi

I recall reading in some thread about electric cookers that even at 10 psi it takes way the hell longer. I'm sure there are tables of these things in one of the PDF's of stamets books or online. Also, Rye is supposed to be one of the grains most laden with bacterial endospores, so it's probably a bad choice for an electric cooker.
Steam release from a stovetop cooker in not an indication of pressure or heat. Basically there is a weight ontop of a steam valve. When the pressure exceeds 15psi, the weight lifts off and released pressure until it has dropped back to 15psi or less, then falls back down and seals it again. The stove should be adjusted so this happens as rairly as possible while the weight rocks, indicating that the cooker is right at pressure, to concerve water and energy.
An electric cooker will have a thermostat and pressure gauges so it can apply the appropriate amount of heat to maintain pressure most likely, and thus will release very little steam.

Pony up some cash and get yourself a real pc. I had an electric one too. It's small and takes way too long (energy cost and time). I may use it for doing agar but mainly I just use it for cooking food and the big pc for my shroom work.
