Cakes on inside of chamber turning blue [pics]
    #22165303 - 08/30/15 03:55 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone, been following PF TEK thanks to this site for a while now. I'm now in the fruiting phase and am stumped, as the cakes on the interior of my SGFC are turning blue and not showing the same amount of growth. From what I understand, it seems to be bruising, not contamination, but I can't figure out why it's happening.

Any ideas how I can fix this? Thanks in advance

details:
-Incubated for 2 weeks and allowed to consolidate for a week
-dunked for 24 hours and rolled in vermiculite
-i spray/fan at least 3x/day
-they've been in the SGFC for a week now, in a room which fluctuates between 65*F at night and 80*F day (est.)

Thanks, why do you say that? Too much humidity?

'Cause they'll colonize the perlite. Put them on aluminum foil cut to the size of the cake.

Is it possible that the blue(ish) ones are dehydrated? Not that I'm trying to question the "stay the course" advice, but would it be a dumb idea to dunk them for 24 hours or so?

Here's an updated pic from today. As you can see, 2/3 near the edge of the chamber have much more growth than the "interior" cakes

I would be embarrassed to show pictures of my dying FC. They have shrunk, turned blue, and still putting out production. We simply cannot keep it from drying out. The cakes are like styrofoam now. alas. Nice colors, tho.

Where do you have your fruiting chamber? Is it elevated to allow air flow from the bottom through the perlite? Give them a good heavy misting for the time being. (To clarify, a light mist, but a lot of it.)

Just keep doing what you're doing and check out this thread about misting your cakes. Make sure they're glistening when you mist but not pooling with water

It's in the middle of a small (12ftx12ft maybe), relatively empty room. I keep a window cracked. Another thought I've had is that I have a window fan in the next room over, and there may be too much of a cross-breeze? Or maybe now I'm just overthinking it...

It's about 4 inches off the ground. I guess a few more wouldn't hurt? Although I don't think it would make that much of a difference.

Cut the foil so it's a disc around your cake. Honestly, I wouldn't fuck with anything. They're producing 100x better then 90% of the cakes I've seen. I'd just keep them misted well.

Clear that perlite around the base of that cake. Myc colonizes perlite and you don't want it to divert it's energy.

You could have told me sooner.

That wasn't in the tek, either. Hmmm, lots of stuff isn't in the tek, like keeping the humidity up in the dryest environment imaginable.

No such thing as over thinking it. I had bruising from an opened air vent in my room once upon a time. I closed it and upped my misting and it went away over time.

Thank you sir, even if you don't mean it.

This is it. The last pictures of my soon-to-be-shuttered SGFC. I know a lot more now than I did when I started it. Hell, I bet I could actually grow enough out of an FC to satisfy our needs, but it won't be as much fun as finding the sacred culture. That's my holy grail. Maybe it would be best to do single cakes for testing, but that's going to go unanswered for now.

If, however, this is success, then I'll still recommend PF-tek for beginners, but understand if others suggest skipping it. Best learning device, but can be frustrating.

I live in a pretty dry area plus I built my first SGFC fucked up and just never improved it once I got into monos. Here are my two dry ass cakes I bothered to take a pic of:

Hey op. How often are you using a spray bottle top mist the cakes? Why are the caps cracked? Why aren't the cakes glistening with moisture?
Spray, spray, spray! Like 20-30 good pumps.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I know! You know I know! But that doesn't help the new guys!

:laugh2:

From my experience, I learned a lot from cakes. I believe I learned a whole lot more from that experience than I would have if I had started out with tubs. It's easier to diagnose what's going wrong on cakes, they are more foolproof, and they get guys some early success for cheap. That's why I encourage PF-Tek, and will always continue to do so. Showing the results of a mono versus cakes, well, let's just say I want that, too! But if I were going to start running--and I am most definitely not--I wouldn't start by training for a marathon.

How much did you learn from those first failures? That's the secret. Learning from mistakes, because nobody ever learned a darn thing from a success. Well, i learned it's a lot more fun to be successful, but that's about it.

Don't miss out on good info

This whole hobby has completely changed my outlook on life lol. It sounds crazy to say but it's true . I'm an extreme perfectionist IRL. There are a lot of things I'm very good at and a lot of things I'm just plain good at, nothing special. If I failed at something I had a tendency to not try again for risk of embarrassment/feeling like a failure. Now if I don't fuck up something my first time I don't find it worth doing 'cause it's probably too easy.

I'll be working on a bunch of stuff soon, moving into a bigger place today and will have space for an official lab and shit.
