Gymnopilus, Amanita, Chantrelle and Black Trumpet ID Request
    #22164772 - 08/30/15 01:04 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys this is my first post here but loooong time lurker and big into forums in general.

Well won't bore you with the details but I've been hunting certain mushrooms for years now but just lately (over the past two years) have I really taken it seriously.  Psilocybin isn't my go-to psychedelic anymore but there is something so amazing about finding your own mushrooms.  Unfortunately I live in good ol' WI so most of my hunting is kept to edibles.  I've been hunting morels since I was a kid.

I hope I can attach these well but here are some pics from my recent hunt that I'd like to share and hope that I can without a doubt ID at least a few.  I mainly curious about the 'possible' gymnopilus, as I'm almost certain these others are correct ID's but I'm new so please tell me if I'm wrong

Amanita muscaria var. guessowii-

Growing out of an old mossy stump.  In a mixed forest, but surrounded in that area by pine.

Gymnopilus?-

Found in a mixed forest but in a dense pine area, there were old/rotting logs of various woods not far from these including birch, maple and oak I believe.  But none of these seemed to be growing directly on wood.  It's hard to see in the pictures but they all, except the large/mature one, have a greenish tinge to them.  And after breaking apart some of the pins there was noticed a green/blue coloration at the break.  Unfortunately due to circumstances a spore print couldn't be obtained, but the gills become a more rusty brown upon drying and closely resemble the color of a gymnopilus spore print.

Chanterelles-

Found in a newer growth oak and maple forest with some pine.  In the moss.

Black Trumpets-

Found peaking out from under a log in the same area as the Chanterelles.

And mystery mushrooms but some seem to resemble gymnopilus..

It should be noted this is my first time finding any of these besides the Amanita so I'm excited.  Let me know about my findings, any advice is appreciated

Very jealous of those Amanita muscaria var. guessowii you got there, been dying to get my hands on some of those here in NY. Awful season this year. Two more days of growth would've seen you a great harvest. I would've just taken the big one and left the smaller ones to mature and harvest imo.

Have a good MUSHROOMS ARE GODS trip, cheers. :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

"These symptoms suggested that our evolution, I suppose, from the animal kingdom into the human kingdom itself was catalyzed, or triggered by our encounter with these Hallucenogenics, and, Yes, that we are an Ape with a symbiotic relationship to a Mushroom and that has given us self reflection, language, religion and all the spectrum of effects that flow from these things and one can only wonder how these hallucinogens might effect our future evolution as well. They have brought us to this point, and as we make our Relationship to them concious, we may be able to take control of our future evolutionary path..."

Hey man much appreciated

Sadly that was literally the only good specimen I found throughout the forest, all the other ones had already been slug food by the time I found em.  It's also in a spot that's four hours north so I only had one chance :/  Around here these are plentiful but I gotta admit I'm somewhat afraid to give em a go.  All the reports on guessowii in particular seem positive but lots of people seem wary of muscaria.

The one thing I notice about muscaria hunting too, and this time was no different.  The mushrooms seem to "call" to me...  I swear I'll look out in a certain direction in the woods and something will tell me there's an Amanita out there and more times than not that feeling is right.  My first find ever I looked through a small clearing and the light was shining in a way as to almost beckon me to come.  As I went in I saw a tree that had fallen and had taken alot of ground with it, down in the hole sat two of the most beautiful pair of Amanitas I've ever seen...  The sun was shining through the canopy directly on them.  It was gorgeous, and I would have never seen them unless I had listened to my instincts.

I'm hoping a T.I. can come in here and check out those "gym?" pics too..  Oh I'll be soo pumped the day I find some of those haha.

Take it easy friend :mushroom2::stoned:

Thanks for the post man!

Unfortunately I didn't get a spore print due to circumstances.  I found these right before I was leaving the place I was staying and had a 5 hour drive home, got back around midnight then passed out.  Tried getting a little print before leaving but nothing dropped from the one partially opened or the mature one.

I looked around the mature one to see if I could see any spores as I know Gyms are known to be heavy spore droppers but saw nothing which kind of got me a bit worried.  With that said it had been windy and rainy up until that day so maybe they were washed/blown away?

After drying the gills of the two opened ones took on a rustier brown look and there seemed to be a dusting of the same colored powder lining the inside of the containter they were contained in.  Possibly that rusty brown powder was the spores?  The gills now dried sure resemble a Gym spore print but I know gill color can't tell for sure what the spore print will be.  Edit- After looking at various gym pics the gills closely resemble that rusty brown coloration that I'm seeing elsewhere.

And I do remember reading that Galerina's bruise black, but unlike the bluing reaction of Psilocybe's.  Those pins pictured above in the "mystery" section did just that, I threw em out after that haha.

Gyms and galerina like the same habitat they often grow side by side. Do be careful. But gyms also have a very distinctive bitter taste to them. I normally verify by just pinching a small piece and taste test it. I don't reccomend this if your not familiar with gyms because you def don't wanna taste test galerinas or any other randoms.

Also active gyms tend to have a greenish hue to the bruising...this can be brought out by refrigerating them for a few hours.
