Why not talk to the cops?

EDIT/CAVEAT: Don't listen to anything I say. I'm psychotic.
Okay, many people make mistakes or get scared, or say the wrong thing.
I *always* talk to them and act normal, so they think I have nothing to hide.
Last weekend they caught me with an entire lab in my room.
"Can we look in there?"
"Sure!"
"Okay, well we aren't going to do anything but you have to get rid of all those dangerious chemicals"
My life
Got caught with B&E - busted to trespassing, got recognizance
2 lbs of mushrooms and a few oz pot -- $250 in court costs (and I had to leave the state)
Caught with an empty fifth of Turkey that fel out of the car after getting puled over listening to the Beastie Boys on full blast... "When did you drink that, son?" "Uhh... after I parked
Caught shitfaced with a friend with coke on the way to the bar... Somehow just got a warning.
I jumped out of a cop car wearing fox tails... well, okay I got probation for that one. I WSN'T being nice though -- I told them they were being a couple of assholes then started a riot in Tampa county.
Drank a fifth of Turkey and crashed into a tree (no I'm not proud of that one) and left the state.
Though I'm sure most people should keep their mouth shut. It's just a matter if you know you're getting arrested. In that case you might as well. If you can tell what the cop wants (they are all power freaks) you can probably skip that part.
Cops are people too -- you just gotta figure out what makes them like someone and it's generally not rocket science.

I don't trust the police because they wont trust me anyways. I don't like that some police look for crime or try to incriminate people with anything they can. I dislike the cops who are on power trips and are trigger happy.
Not all police are bad people in my eyes but I don't trust them either way.

Being very polite and concise does go a long way with police IME - just be careful not to say too much. The 'fuck the police' 'all cops are pigs' is not the mindset to have or outwardly present especially when in conversation with them at any point - some cops ARE cool - notably rare, but they exist.. Like OP said - "cops are people too."
Bought me lunch a bunch of times. Most gave my weed and piece back after being searched (illegally mind you) when I was hitchiking the country (before all this weed legalization stuff.) Had one ask for a pull off my flask.
Of course I've seen actions the other way - stealing memorabilia (non-drug-related or illegal) shit from a (illegal) backpack search. Having another one perjure himself on the stand against me. Illegal stop and search fishing expedition in a national forest.
I guess the point is that no two people are alike in their personality or method of doing their job - that you shouldn't generalize - and it often pays to be polite to law enforcement officers.

But to imply (fake) to them that YOU are THEIR friend when in a non-violent confrontation is kind of the point of this post.

My dad was a cop while I was growing up, so I spent a lot of time at the station, hanging around with cops. I want to add another caveat that I've lived in pretty small towns my whole life; like, the biggest place I've lived in up until now had a population of about 120,000. So my experience with police has also been in small town settings.
That said, the officers I've been around, been pulled over by, or was otherwise stopped by for doing something I shouldn't have been, all of them have done so in the interest of making their community a safer place. Especially in towns and smaller cities, communities are pretty close and for the most part, they don't want to see people they know and like get hurt.
The best way to be "friends" with the police is to not be dangerous. Don't act like they're a danger and they'll return the favor. Honestly, especially with small amounts of shrooms, weed, LSD, etc., if you're polite and compliant and you're not stocking guns and shit, many of them won't arrest you because your lack of threatening behavior means booking you keeps them from tracking down more dangerous suspects.
Now, naturally, that's not to say there aren't cops who are there to fuck your shit up. They totally exist (especially in southeast KS; stay away from that disaster area). But it's hard to say who's who before they start talking with you, so why not play nice in the meantime?
