[Request] Degrafting lophophora information
    #2216108 - 01/03/04 03:02 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hello,

Does anyone have a good reference to or could someone with experience (Una perhaps, I have enjoyed your other posts) post a short tutorial or photo tutorial on how to degraft lophophora. I would like to read how lophophora are to get going again on thier own root(s) and what that procedure entails. I checked a couple searches but did not find a good post on this topic (but I could have missed it). Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Just cut it off and let it callous, then put it in some dry soil and do something like bottom water it and it will form roots. It roots very easily, and it rarely rots thanks to certain anti-bacterial alkaloids it contains.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

Degraft means to remove the scion from the host it was grafted on to.

The reason I asked about the info is that I have seen some pics of cacti developing roots while grafted and was curious to know if this was done intentionally.

Thank you again.

I would reccomend decapitating the scion somewhat. You don't have to chop it directly in half but take off most of the button with a clean sterile blade leaving some of the scion left on the stalk. Both wounds will callous in the normal fashion and the part left on the stock will form pups. Once your removed scion is callused you can root like you would root cacti in general. Normally though i give it a dust of rooting hormone.

Roots forming in mid-air while on grafts are not normally intentionally done. It happens from changes in condition, adventitious rooting, and humidity levels.
