What type of job should i go for?
    #22160719 - 08/29/15 01:11 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I need some experience doing something that's related to my field. The problem is all my experience is in nursing. I'll have my geology degree in December so what type of job should I get to gain some experience that would look good on paper?

Volunteering at a hospital or nursing home helps alot. Even thou u wont make money.

Also, any kind of care giving helps a lot too, since its a similar but more basic field.

If you're looking for money get into the oil/natural gas industry.  They'll definitely hire geologists and pay extremely well from what I've heard, but it's very hard work and some might have some ethical concerns getting into that field.  Also mining, but I think oil is bigger in the US.

Also you could look into land conservation type jobs working for state agencies or companies who specialize in land management, which probably wouldn't pay as much but could be more rewarding in other ways.

Given that you'll be getting a degree in geology, a job related to that field would be ideal. Being a laboratory assistant would offer some valuable experience, as would working as a surveyor, or any related field.

My problem is anything that would give me experience also requires a degree which I don't have yet. I'm just confused as to where to go from here.

My sister is a geologist.  She spends a lot of time in the field directing heavy construcion equipment operators  I would try to familiarize myself with them.  Not to operate them but to know how they work and their capabilities and limitations.

I would think it would depend on what you intend to do with the degree to begin with. There are a number of fields that aren't really that connected, that would use such a degree. Which way are you trying to go with it?

I may or may not be able to come up with something given that, but it would definitely help others come up with ideas.

I'd be perfectly happy working for DNR as a ranger or something... It's just really important to me that I get to be outside most of the time.  Money doesn't really matter as long as I get to be outside.
