Yes sir, making tea with them is the way to go though. Some lemon juice and water and a bit of honey and you'll be set. Eating them isn't so great, they are rather bitter, and the large ones aren't very strong, so picking them young and drying them seems best if you want to consume the entire mushroom. The pins are much more potent than mature.

I thin I read somewhere that drying gymnopilus reduces potency by a lot.

I haven't noticed much difference in potency between dried and wet. I suppose psilocin content may be a bit lower, but not noticably. I've only used a fan in a cool dark room to dry them, so heat and light may make a difference depending on your drying method/conditions.

Can you describe what your habitat was, had it rained recently, anything else you might think would be helpful to the forum for finding some Gyms.
I love Gyms, and am always trying to see more information on the genus posted here, with our powers combined we can make it happen.
Nice find.

Looks like it, more info though please?
Spore print color? Smell? Stem texture, and pattern? Noticeable greenish bruising? (especially where the stem connects to the base of the cap)

I think they may just be nice sized luteus. The biggest one was only as big as my hand. Making them into tea sounds like an excellent idea :-)

Then I would most def. say you got one. I can kinda see the greenish bruising, and gyms are notorious for their extreme bitter, I always taste test a piece the half size of a dime in the field before i go collecting a bunch. Wait for a TI before any consumption if thats your plan. Also placing them on a paper towel, on a rack in the fridge will help preserve it from turning into those soft black places and bring out the blueing/greening of it. Good job.
Also Spectabilis (Junonius) do normally have a thicker stalk, but that doesnt mean thats not them, sometimes microscopy is the only thing you can do to tell them apart. (I have a scope next to my laptop just for such occasions =))

For reference These are Junonius

And, The gyms to left of the Amanita Amerimuscaria are I believe Luteus.
You can normally see the difference in stalk diameter and cap width, sometimes even color.
I just remember it like (Short and Fat Jumbo Juno, Tall and Skinny Luteo Linky) haha

Yea, spectabilis always look like they have a super fat stalk. I think these are luteus just like the other ones I posted, but these are full grown adults. I'll wait for a TI before I drink this tea though, no need to make myself sick haha

The lake itself is surrounded by a semi-floating mat of mixed vegetation including wiregrass sedge, broad-leaf cat-tail, blue-joint grass, bur-reed, beaked sedge, and bristly sedge. The considerable rice cutgrass in the center of the lake is an indicator of shallow, silty conditions in the summer. In low areas, the mat is bordered by willows, red-osier dogwood, bog birch, poison sumac, sensitive fern, and also has an abundance of manna grass, marsh nettle, and tear-thumb.
^ does that sound like a good place to hunt for some gyms?

Especially with gyms, when I was a noob (like first 3 weeks of hunting ever) I thought everything I saw was "special" and almost downed a handful of Galerina that looked like Gymnopilus Luteofolius, little did I know those galerina contained toxic levels of Amatoxin.

so is the greenish bruising we sometimes see on gyms really green, or is it as a result of the yellow/orange + blue = a greenish hue?

Honestly idk..I tend to believe its because blue is mixed with the natural color of the mushroom = green, but then again, most active gymnopilus species contain more than just psilocybin, and contain multiple other alkaloids, which could be responsible

I make some tea with a large amount of fresh ones and then dry the rest for tea later in the year or season. The psilocin content degrades, bit most of the other alkaloids remain. Frozen tea does sound like a promising way to store them though.

actually...I have NEVER even found a gym growing directly off a log...lol I have 1 patch that grows from the base of a stump, but the rest are on buried wood...normally on the side of roads...or by trails etc. etc. but no..only 1 flush during the fall normally.

Stev0- yes. Luteus will be in same spots for years. Untill wood is gone or competitor fungi takes over. Check in rains of spring summer AND fall. I find gyms fruit in tune with big rains. Keep them spots and keep finding more logs. Head west from first spot. Your bound to find more

Gymnopilus luteus I believe. Found in PA growing from the base of a fallen tree, in a dried swamp area where there's plenty of sunlight. Spore print is rusty orange, pleasant odor, tastes very bitter. Little green & some blueish bruising in spots. Gills bruising rust brown. Had a few good rains last week, but weather has been dry the last two days.

I found these 2 days ago while on a hike through a very public trail, they were growing on a rotting log and they smell extremely sweet.
In my opinion there is green/blue bruising on the aborts but I would like another opinion !
Could only take photos after they were picked as it was a very busy trail !
Let me know what you guys think !!

Gymnopilus luteus for second finds. They tend to be tad bit smaller , skinnier, plus more potent by weight than BLG's.
If you get those BLG's next yr more immature, you'll be in for a treat.

Theres definitely still enough time for another flush, with rain and weather not dropping below 0. Hopefully I can share pictures of another flush.
I can try to catch them before they mature now that I know the specific log, the rusty portion below the cap is my tell tale sign, so i'm glad they were mature when I found them.

My logs have stopped flushing. They produced quite well, but it looks like the fruiting season is over for gums here. At least for luteus.

Hey I think I may have found some Gyms, hoping you cats can help. Found these today in northern GA under a Poplar tree, appearing to be growing from a natural hardwood mulch comprised of Poplars and Oaks. Waiting on a spore print now. Not much bruising yet. I left quite a few in situ to hopefully open cap overnight, which is always helpful
Also threw in some of this year's Weilii

Nice those look like a cultivation, is that a planter?
Here's my newest inoculation project

Got its third bottle ready for my next visit. Hoping for a monster some day. This pile is in the middle of a clear cut made of fir chunks and chips, and has been untouched for years. Nothing grows on it yet

Found these ones at the same spot found last week.

You were spot on. Looked west of where the last bunch had been found and came across an even bigger cluster. Some of the ones in the back are not edible, any suggestions on what to do with them?

Luteus is on logs. BLG are ground dwelling stump dwelling. The purple clade of gyms seem to like wood chips but are mostly common on far west coast. Look for old swamp cedar habitat. G braendeleii inhabit that habitat. I think they are really cool. Pink purple orange colors. Vivid blues.http:// http://

My Gyms are growing....these look really orange for luteofolius but the pins look exactly right, then they lose the reddish color as they grow. Im still really skeptical as to what these actually are tbh...

"gymno-" means "naked," so in the case of gymnopilus, it means "naked cap" and gymnosperm means "naked seed."

Are these some sort of gymnopilus? I found them growing in my caerulipe habitat and there are thousands of them. They don't smell like gyms, but they kind of look like gyms.

What color is the spore print and can you photograph it? Try to get some better photos in your future hunts and remember that it sometimes take several tries just to get the right shots.

Felt like this thread needed a lil action...
G. Theirsii

Thought they were luteofolius at first, but they never showed any signs of bluing, and they dried to a much darker brown than usual. After further review I'd be inclined to believe they are theirsii.
Good thing I left most of them for the happy lil slug

Ime theirsii have a much more pointy pin and fade to a yellow orange around the brim much faster. Also theirsii will not show any signs of bruises. Luteofolius will almost always have one specimen displaying blue green discoloration.
I've also noted that luteofolious dry to a nice golden brown, those that are more purple retain that hue, theirsii on the other hand all dry very dark like chocolate brown.
I've found both species in both alder and fir chips and both growing from fir logs. Once both species in same giant pile of chips. After drying was the only way I could tell them apart
I wish I had pics of the dry ones to share but here's a good comparison imo
These I believe are g. Theirsii

And these to be g. luteofolius.

The blue green discoloration is the biggest tell fresh, often there's just a blue freckle. But the theirsii in person just feel different a lil too kinda slimier if that makes sense.
I've never eaten theirsii because of the warning and known lack of activity, but luteofolius have never caused discomfort other than the part when you have to chew. Like eating a moldy lemon wedge.
I'd compare the pnw specimens I've collected with the potency of weak cubes. Like an eighth for level 2. Powder in capsules makes it much easier... But they also cause a sedative effect and in some cases I've experienced strange random sexual arousal after ingesting.
That's just my thoughts on the subject.
Alan seems to know them pretty well maybe ask him?

Some serious green bruising on a g. Luteofolious where pinched off.

Was minutes after harvest, fastest darkest bruising I've ever seen on a gym

Hi. I love gyms. I was so happy to find this thread. Illinois can be a challenging state for this type of hunting. I want to spread some hope for the other Illinois folks though. So far this is the only one I've got photos of, but there have been others. Pickings have been slim, but finally, a month after having found this big boy I believe I've spied another on a log in the same yard. Now it's just a matter of waiting. It's still on the small side and there is only one (wth?). Definitely active though and most certain it's Junonius. Odd habit though. It seems everyone else finds them in clusters. So I'm gonna wait and see; let it grow and hope some nice super powered green pins start popping up next to it. Please wish me luck in my quest guys! Thanks!
