Smell really good. Taste really bitter. Spore print is rusty. Bits of blue/green bruising.

I think they may just be nice sized luteus. The biggest one was only as big as my hand. Making them into tea sounds like an excellent idea :-)

Then I would most def. say you got one. I can kinda see the greenish bruising, and gyms are notorious for their extreme bitter, I always taste test a piece the half size of a dime in the field before i go collecting a bunch. Wait for a TI before any consumption if thats your plan. Also placing them on a paper towel, on a rack in the fridge will help preserve it from turning into those soft black places and bring out the blueing/greening of it. Good job.
Also Spectabilis (Junonius) do normally have a thicker stalk, but that doesnt mean thats not them, sometimes microscopy is the only thing you can do to tell them apart. (I have a scope next to my laptop just for such occasions =))

For reference These are Junonius

And, The gyms to left of the Amanita Amerimuscaria are I believe Luteus.
You can normally see the difference in stalk diameter and cap width, sometimes even color.
I just remember it like (Short and Fat Jumbo Juno, Tall and Skinny Luteo Linky) haha

Yea, spectabilis always look like they have a super fat stalk. I think these are luteus just like the other ones I posted, but these are full grown adults. I'll wait for a TI before I drink this tea though, no need to make myself sick haha

The lake itself is surrounded by a semi-floating mat of mixed vegetation including wiregrass sedge, broad-leaf cat-tail, blue-joint grass, bur-reed, beaked sedge, and bristly sedge. The considerable rice cutgrass in the center of the lake is an indicator of shallow, silty conditions in the summer. In low areas, the mat is bordered by willows, red-osier dogwood, bog birch, poison sumac, sensitive fern, and also has an abundance of manna grass, marsh nettle, and tear-thumb.
^ does that sound like a good place to hunt for some gyms?

Especially with gyms, when I was a noob (like first 3 weeks of hunting ever) I thought everything I saw was "special" and almost downed a handful of Galerina that looked like Gymnopilus Luteofolius, little did I know those galerina contained toxic levels of Amatoxin.

Haha dang dude...well gyms are hardwood lovers. I tend to find them on burried hardwood more than anywhere else.

Ahhh alright, well its a nature preserve down the way from my house. I am going to check it out later this week(hopefully tomorrow). I'm sure I can find some hardwoods in the surrounding area. I will report back with any finds.

so is the greenish bruising we sometimes see on gyms really green, or is it as a result of the yellow/orange + blue = a greenish hue?

Honestly idk..I tend to believe its because blue is mixed with the natural color of the mushroom = green, but then again, most active gymnopilus species contain more than just psilocybin, and contain multiple other alkaloids, which could be responsible

I make some tea with a large amount of fresh ones and then dry the rest for tea later in the year or season. The psilocin content degrades, bit most of the other alkaloids remain. Frozen tea does sound like a promising way to store them though.

actually...I have NEVER even found a gym growing directly off a log...lol I have 1 patch that grows from the base of a stump, but the rest are on buried wood...normally on the side of roads...or by trails etc. etc. but no..only 1 flush during the fall normally.
