Shroomery therapy
    #22160185 - 08/29/15 11:00 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So, I notice that a lot of members make threads asking for help or to vent etc. The pub is sort of like a support group for these types of threads. I am just wondering how it compares to going to a support group or seeing a therapist about said problems. I think that people here often post good advice and help each other out. Of course people get trolled too. So, what do you think? Is the pub a positive alternative to support groups/therapists?

Philose intelligently.

I remember some years back I made a really long thread in the pub about how I thought my friend was gonna kill himself, and everybody responded saying things like, "Damn, your friend sounds like a fucking faggot. He would never kill himself." "WTF is wrong with your friend, he's such a bitch." "Haha, I honestly hope that pussy does kill himself."

He then went on to kill himself.

Generally speaking though, IDK! I mean, I used to go to some counselor therapist guy and he was a hell a lot more helpful than the Shroomery in general. The Shroomery is good at giving advice on drugs and shit though. I dunno man, but I feel like a lot of times when people give me advice it falls on deaf ears because I generally put other people's opinions into less consideration than my own intuition so I guess my viewpoint is biased.

i think the quality of advise depends on the day around these parts..

some people have asked for help and got it.

others have done the same and got nowhere in a hurry.

all depends on which way the wind is blowing

I feel an overall sense of support in the pub when I'm going on about a problem.
There'll always be an asshole or two that doesn't give a fuck,
yet has time to demean whatever it is I may be going through.

I have no idea how to compare it to a real therapy session as I've never been to one
but I believe you can get the same sense from it.
Really, all a lot of us need sometimes is just to have someone hear us out, not even give us
advice, just a friendly nod will do.

:manofapproval:

Some good therapy with this graemlin.

There are some good feel good graemlins on here for sure. I've just noticed over the years that people do generally get good advice when they post about problems. Of course, sometimes responses cause the OP to melt and go down in flames.

Real therapy has never done anything for me. I have been to a psychiatrist who was this asian guy and just wanted to get me doped up on seroquil. I went to a psychologist and talked it out and she offered me a few tips but she told me nothing I didn't know.

I go to an ADD doc that says one or two words then just has his prescription pad on the table.

Most psychiatrists are just there to push drugs and the psychologists are good but I find they cause more problems then they resolve.

For sure. I can recall receiving great advice around here in topics ranging from real estate law to car repair, and even relationships.

It's awesome to have a community here where you can hear from people that come from so many different walks of life. I've never thought of this place as therapeutic, but now that you bring it up, it sure as hell is.

:manofapproval:

This graemlin is just too good.

Sheekle, So sorry to hear about your friend. That sucks.

Bitter cactus, that summarizes my experience with psychologists as well. I have never been to a support group, so I can't comment on that.

I do think that this is a great community. It is the only forum that I have stuck around because I think the people are great.

I feel bad when I see a thread where someone who doesnt know this forum real well is asking for input on their life or a situation, and one of the first people to respond is someone like the doobie dude or zzzz.  I noticed a lot of people weigh more heavily the advice that comes earlier in the thread, as the stuff later seems "piled on" and if it's a big thread, much of it gets glossed over, even if it's smart stuff.  So as a result this person who doesn't know better is valuing a post made by xplicit-relapszzz or akira akuma, and it could potentially fuck their life up.

I get that people want to handle their problems as effortlessly and cheaply as possible, but I wish people would stop turning to the pub for help with important shit.  Also, I wish they'd stop coming here for medical opinions.  I've seen some really dangerous input offered in that arena.

A couple examples to back up my post, so people don't think I'm just picking on others:

Recently, a girl made a thread talking about how her boyfriend is physically and emotionally abusive and she has feelings for his friend. Advice from the doobie dude? "Have a 3some with them."

Yesterday, someone made a thread asking what kind of diseases he could have because he accidentally got tick blood in his eye. Input from xplicit relapszzz: "u have aids"

These were both instances of people coming here for real advice for real issues that effect their quality of life, and they're given dangerous or bogus advisement. Yeah, it's up to them to follow it or not, but they too may be idiots who are unable to discern.

In short, if you have a real problem, don't come to the pub with it.

Yea, it happens a lot. So much so that it doesn't bother me in the least as I just attribute those comments to regular Shroomery shenanigans.

I've noticed with you specifically, you actually write up some nice, long posts truly trying to help people but because another user trolled the OP first, they think you're doing the same when you're actually giving sound advice.

My girlfriend made an account here a week or so after we started dating. She refuses to come into the pub because she's scared of the way she'll be treated. And I can't blame her, especially being a new woman here. Mostly because of what she saw in that horrible woman, Zepequeno's thread recently.

Burke, I agree with you. The outcome of many threads is determined by the first few posts. So, when the first or second post is negative, most people jump on the band wagon and back up that opinion. Sometimes it goes the other way though. The other day Rose posted about getting kicked out of a bar unfairly. She got a lot of support in that thread. It probably also depends upon who posts the thread. A nobody posting their problems is more likely to get a shit storm than a well-liked, known member. I do believe that there are some great people on here that do want to help their fellow shroomerites. And, I commend them for doing so.

When somebody who is not a flaming asshole douchbag posts asking for advice I give my best.  Sometimes, because I don't pander, it is unwelcome.  Fine.  If you don't want to hear what a self destructive retard you are I can't help you.  I don't play that game.
