Pinning in bag.. should I do anything?
    #22159770 - 08/29/15 09:05 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So I have this BRF bag that I inoculated probably about a month ago. I didn't think it was completely done colonizing so I was leaving it for a week of consolidation. However, I noticed this morning that there are about fifteen small pins growing around the sides and bottom of it. Here are some pictures of some of them.

What I'm wondering is, what's the best way I can fruit this one BRF cake? I don't really want to build a full size SGFC just for one cake, which seems to be what other people have recommended to me, and I don't really want to fruit in the bag because I don't want the shrooms to be all smushed against the sides.

Think of it this way, if you build a sgfc now you won't have to build it again for future projects :gethigh:

So if anyone is curious, I decided to make a kind of mini SGFC that's just the right size for one cake. Here's what it looks like:

Any thoughts on this? I have my main grow bag in the closet still colonizing.

Haha I like that. You need to sit the cake on foil though. You know you can also make a mini SGFC with a 3 liter soda bottle.

What's the reason for this? I've seen a lot of people say this, and seen most people putting it on tin foil or on jar lids, but what's the negative effect of putting it right on the perlite?

What's the negative effect of putting it straight on the perlite? And yeah I think it's good for me because I can easily keep the container and reuse it, as I never plan to grow a lot at once anyway.

The perlite is full of potential contams and some perlite has fertilizer in it. Sitting the cake on foil protects it from contaminates, chemical damage, and physical damage. You should also give that cake a dunk and roll.

The mycellium wastes time and energy trying to colonize a rock.....

The cakes can get water logged from all the moisture on the perlite...

I never thought about the cake trying to colonize the perlite. Admittedly it's been over a year since I've fruited a cake.

Fully colonized cakes are contam resistant, and fruiting is done in open air....it has nothing at all to do with contamination....

It also does not protect the cakes at all....set them on foil and u can still cause damage to them......the fertilizer should have been rinsed off the perlite....

Goes to show how much I know about cakes. I should just stay out of these threads
